I'm of two minds about this book
On the one hand: I love Mercedes Lackey's Imagination and I love how human her protagonists are. Small gestures and details matter. There is a heap of interesting female characters and queer characters are a natural part of the story. The settings are always fantastic and the premises interesting. Even so... I was disappointed by this book. It has already started in the first volume: Everything seems to come together just a little too easily. The plot suggests that this is a survival story, that there are hardships to be weathered and sacrifices to be made but actually... There are seldomly real consequences. Everything can be solved by magic and by the characters being just smarter than their obstacles. This is not really what I wanted of a Mercedes Lackey-Book and I suppose it is maybe connected to this series being a prequel and trying to find a source for all the moving parts in later series? For me, it didn't really work this time. I will read the third book anyway because I already bought it and I love the Worldbuilding but maybe I will just not expect too much of it.
