I recently had the pleasure of delving into the second installment of Heather Fawcett's trilogy, "Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands," and I must say it exceeded my expectations, even surpassing the first book in the series. The seamless continuation of the story shortly after the events of the first book makes it essential to read them in order. I believe that reading the initial installment enhances the overall reading experience, providing a richer context for the narrative. One of the book's strengths lies in its ability to draw readers in effortlessly. The characters we were introduced to in the first book undergo significant development in this sequel, adding an incredible layer of depth to the narrative. In essence, "Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands" not only maintains the momentum set by its predecessor but elevates the series to new heights. I wholeheartedly recommend reading the first book before delving into this one to fully appreciate the intricacies of the plot and savor the evolving characters. Fawcett's storytelling prowess continues to shine, making this a must-read for fans of the fantasy genre. I eagerly anticipate the release of the third book in the series and can hardly wait to see where the story takes us next.
The Emily Wilde books have become one of my favorite cozy reads, especially in wintertime. I just love the vibe, I adore Emily, and I'm rooting for her and Wendell in a totally non-drama way. For once, the world is not at stake, no one is the obvious hero, and Faerie is scary but in a non-scary way (I'm aware this didn't make sense lol).
At the heart of everything is the dynamic between Emily and Wendell, and reading them I'm always picturing a young Emma Thompson and slightly older Alexis Denisof. Yes, that's my dream cast. Both are still on a scholarly path, even with Wendell's secret out, and their romance blossoming (well...a little bit...in a really cozy way). But also things are happening. Not many of them, but just enough to drive the protagonists and the story forward. And in the end there is much promise for many more adventures in book 3. The writing style is unique, and Heather Fawcett manages to combine a diary style narration with absolute stunning prose. Time and again I forgot that this was Emily writing down here adventures, just to be brought back into her notes at exactly the right times. Almost everything is from her POV which is not always reliable as she states herself. I also love it when Wendell takes over the notebook to show off his neat handwriting. Absolute 5/5 stars because Em, Wendell, Poe, Shadow and the others now live in my head rent-free forever. Die ersten ~50 Seiten waren langsam und es hat gedauert, bis ich mich durchgekämpft hab. Danach wars 10/10! Ich hatte Sorgen, dass die neuen Charaktäre eher anstrengend werden, war dann aber nicht so. Aber ich komm langsam mit den ganzen Feen-Namen durcheinander -0,5 Sterne für Krapfen im September - Wer isst Krapfen im September?!
Hm, also Teil eins hatte mich schon nicht komplett überzeugt und Teil zwei fand ich nicht besser, eher im Gegenteil. Emily als Protagonistin ist zwar liebenswert aber auch irgendwie anstrengend. Der Schreibstil in Journalform ist zwar einerseits ganz cool, andererseits finde ich es aber unrealistisch, wie genau Dialoge wiedergegeben werden und actionreiche Szenen werden dadurch immer ausgebremst und ich wurde oft rausgerissen. Waren in Teil eins noch die Community in Ljosland und Poe große Boni, die das Buch belebt haben, waren sowohl die Dorfbewohner*innen als auch die Common Fae eher blass und spielten eine kleinere Rolle. Ariadne und Rose waren zwar eine nette Ergänzung des Teams, wirkten teils aber ein bisschen wie Red Shirts. Richtig gut fand ich weiterhin die Fußnoten und die Faerie-Welt und die Forschung über. Ich fand schön, dieses Mal gleich mehrere neue Regionen kennenzulernen und mehr Wesen zu treffen, davon hätte ich auch noch mehr gut gefunden. Am wenigsten überzeugt hat mich die Beziehung zwischen Wendell und Emily. Ich finde ihn einfach unsympathisch und er hat ständig was an ihr auszusetzen, ist übergriffig und benimmt sich furchtbar. Seine Zuneigung finde ich unüberzeugend und es fühlt sich so an, als wäre sie so in die Beziehung gestolpert, weil sie nicht nein sagen konnte und denkt, das macht man halt so. Die Entwicklung der Beziehung sieht man auch überhaupt nicht.. schade! Also weiterhin eine coole mythische Welt, mit mittelmäßigem Plot und wenig ausgearbeiteten Beziehungen.. Das hier sind nur die Hauptpunkte: Ich war nicht der größte Fan vom ersten Band und daher freue ich mich, dass mir die Fortsetzung besser gefallen. Die Beziehung zwischen Emily und Wendell wirkt viel harmonischer. Man sieht die Zuneigung beider zueinander. Im ersten Teil hatte ich eher das Gefühl, dass Emily schon fast Dauer-genervt von Wendells Anwesenheit war. Das Setting war nett. Die Story an sich schon fast abenteuerlich. Das Erzähltempo ist, auch wenn immer noch langsam, viel angenehmer. Es gibt einige Erwähnungen von den Ereignissen aus Band 1, was gut fürs Gedächtnis ist. Allerdings finde ich, dass man dieses Buch schon fast als Einzelband lesen kann. Im letzten Drittel wurde es etwas zäh, was schade ist, weil es dort die ein oder andere wichtige Szene ist. Vielen Dank an Orbit und NetGalley für dieses Rezensionsexemplar. Meine Meinung wurde dadurch nicht beeinflusst.

I chose the phrase above as I think it fits perfectly to describe my feelings towards this sequel. There were no new feelings except maybe slight excitement to go on another adventure with these lovable characters. Nonetheless, it stays the sweet and cosy read with incredible way of writing. And by that I mean the words!!! I would highly recommend the audiobook as the narrator is just like I imagined Emily Wilde to sound like, just marvelous. Don’t expect too much or depth to the plot, just a nice and cute day off reading in the faerie realms with a weird scholar🫶🏼
Ich liebe es und fand es noch besser als Band 1. Die Faktoren die in Band 1 gefehlt haben, wurde hier ausgearbeitet. Ich freu michvejtzg schon auf Band3 🧚
Emily Wilde 2 ist just as charming as the first book, although I felt the tension was built up a bit too slowly in the first half. Apart from that, I really enjoyed Emily and Wendell's journey and am excited to see where it leads them in the next volume!
