Born in Edinburgh in 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson battled tuberculosis from childhood but became one of Victorian literature's most beloved authors. Originally studying law, he turned to writing and achieved fame with "Treasure Island" (1883) and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1886). His poor health led to extensive travels seeking better climates, experiences that enriched his adventure novels, travel narratives, and poetry. In 1888, he sailed to the South Pacific and settled in Samoa, where locals called him "Tusitala" (the storyteller). There he continued writing while advocating for Samoan independence. Stevenson died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage in 1894 at age 44, leaving behind a rich legacy of literature that continues to captivate readers worldwide.
