Beschreibung

On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library. Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan? Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall? Perhaps the butler did it.All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. Unless she can discover the lovers’ true identity, she’ll be forced to marry Piers Brandon, Lord Granville—the coldest, most arrogantly handsome gentleman she’s ever had the misfortune to embrace. When it comes to emotion, the man hasn’t got a clue. But as they set about finding the mystery lovers, Piers reveals a few secrets of his own. The oh-so-proper marquess can pick locks, land punches, tease with sly wit . . . and melt a woman’s knees with a single kiss. The only thing he guards more fiercely than Charlotte’s safety is the truth about his dark past.Their passion is intense. The danger is real. Soon Charlotte’s feeling torn. Will she risk all to prove her innocence? Or surrender it to a man who’s sworn to never love?

So, Charlotte is in a complicated situation and she decides to take fate in her own hands. This is how she goes and talks to Piers (in a room, only the 2 of them, in the middle of regency england) about her mother wanting to marry them, and reassuring that he will not hurt her feelings by saying no. Piers wouldn't have minded hurting her feelings either but they don't have time to settle things that things happen and Piers ends up having to propore to save Charlotte's reputation. Once again, a great book by Tessa Dare. Her historical fictions are always so on point and with so many original touches. I guess the reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is that the main divergence point between Charlotte and Piers was the same as the last book : the guy is unable to love, so he'd only be able to give the girl a loveless match. And yeah, I guess having to read 2 books with the exact same trope back to back was a little tiring. Other than that, no complaints. The murder mystery aspect of the book was fun, I thought I'd cracked the code, only to think I ws wrong but to have been right in the end. Which means the book is really good. And the characters were very likable with Piers liking Charlotte right away but being in denial and Charlotte being too loyal a friend to imagine agreeing to Piers's idea.
