Ein krasser Blick hinter die Kulissen von Meta
Was bei Meta so abgeht, darüber hat man in der Vergangenheit – speziell in den Medien – ja schon so einiges mitbekommen. Und trotzdem haben mich die Memoiren von Sarah Wynn-Williams so oft den Kopf schütteln lassen, dass ich fast Nackenschmerzen hatte. Unfassbar einfach! Ich weiß bei dem Buch ehrlich nicht, wo ich anfangen soll. Sarah war, als sie 2012 bei Meta (damals noch Facebook) angefangen hat, wirklich zutiefst davon überzeugt, dass dieses Produkt und dieses Unternehmen die Welt verändern kann. Im positiven Sinne. Und sie hat extrem dafür gekämpft, sich aufgeopfert. Wie unglaublich ernüchternd muss all das gewesen sein, was danach passiert ist. Wie versteckt politische Meinungsmache betrieben, ganze Wahlen manipuliert wurden (immer noch werden). Wie die Einführung des Internets (=Facebook) in Myanmar vom Militär genutzt wurde, um gewaltsam gegen die Rohingya vorzugehen. Wie Facebook dort den Boden für Gewalt und Hass bereitet hat, ohne sich auch nur eine Sekunde mit den Konsequenzen zu befassen. Wie Millionen von Daten von unsicheren und extrem sensiblen Teenagern geteilt und weitergegeben wurden, damit Unternehmen gezielt Werbung für Beauty- und Diätprodukte für exakt diese Zielgruppe machen können. Wie Meta darüber hinaus ein komplett toxisches Unternehmen ist, in dem sexuelle Belästigung wissentlich ignoriert und toleriert wird. Und hey, das ist gerade mal die Spitze des Eisbergs. Kein Wunder, dass Mark die Veröffentlichung dieses Buchs verhindern wollte. Glücklicherweise ist es ihm nicht gelungen.
I had a pretty insane reading pace for this book. it gets crazier by the minute. at the beginning, I was deep into her first steps at facebook, navigating her career in the tech-professional world. after that, her stories spiral into insane stories of workplace harassment, international policy breaches, and white men with too much power and money doing whatever they want. Most of us will never know which detail of which work trip is 100% accurate, but what we can do is trust women when they speak out about harassment in the workplace and anywhere else. and I think we all know that meta is not an NGO with the best intentions. so, if 1+1=2...
