Sixteen-year-old Randy Kapplehoff loves spending the summer at Camp Outland, a camp for queer teens. It's where he met his best friends. It's where he takes to the stage in the big musical. And it's where he fell for Hudson Aaronson-Lim - who's only into straight-acting guys and barely knows not-at-all-straight-acting Randy even exists.
This year, though, it's going to be different. Randy has reinvented himself as 'Del' - buff, masculine and on the market. Even if it means giving up show tunes, nail polish and his unicorn bedsheets, he's determined to get Hudson to fall for him.
But as he and Hudson grow closer, Randy has to ask himself how much is he willing to change for love. And is it really love anyway, if Hudson doesn't know who he truly is?

A very cute book for a younger audience (I think the big A said 12-17). I don't know if 12 should be the target audience for this book or if the bracket is this wide. I think starting from 13/14 this book could be read. I had so much heartache for the two MCs. Being queer as a kid/teen is not always easy or safe. Parents should support their kids and love them unconditionally. The idea of this book is really nice and I enjoyed learning more about young adults becoming themselves.
„Camp“ ist irgendwie eine Mischung aus Heartstopper und Highschool Musical (Das Musical - Die Serie) Vibes and I’m here for it! Ein Sommercamp für queere Teens - wie schön ist das?! Es geht ganz viel darum, man selbst sein zu dürfen und zu sich selbst zu stehen, es geht um Freundschaft, um toxische Maskulinität, um Liebe. Die Freundschaften zwischen den Figuren sind herzerwärmend, das ganze Setting ist ein echter Wohlfühlort und die Message ist in einen tollen Rahmen gesetzt worden. Die Handlung ist sehr um Randys Entscheidung konstruiert, für Hudsons Zuneigung einen großen Teil seiner Persönlichkeit zu verbergen, was die Geschichte sehr vorhersehbar und für mich nicht immer zu 100% nachvollziehbar macht. Das stört m.M.n. im Gesamteindruck allerdings kaum und passt toll zu dem, was die Geschichte vermitteln will. PS: Beim Lesen fand ich es plötzlich super schade, kein theatre kid gewesen sein. 🎭🎶
Kurzweiliger Jugendroman über Liebe, Freund*innenschaft und sehr viel Queerness
In Camp geht es um ein Sommercamp, wie wohl viele Queers es gerne als Teens erlebt hätten: vier Wochen nur unter Queers! Und natürlich geht es um Liebe, um Freund*innenschaft, um Identitätsfindung und queere Expression. Zwar sind die Protagonist*innen alle cis, aber unter den Nebenfiguren gibt es mehrere trans und nichtbinäre Charaktere, einer davon mit Pronomen xier. Ein schöner, romantischer Jugendroman, der sich nicht nur im Sommer gut liest.
