Bone Gap

I remember flying through Bone Gap and I really need to re-read it. It's shelved under my underrated-hidden-gems tag and so I wanna spread some love for it here. I'm not the biggest fan of magical realism cause it can drift off from strange to straight up confusing territory pretty quickly. However, the story here was so gripping, the writing whimsical and the characters so endearing that I devoured the book despite my misgivings. It' set around the mysterious diappearance of beautiful Roza and the people she left behind. We get several different perspectives and, while I loved some characters more than others, they all had interesting chapters and memorable personalities. I particularly enjoyed Finn, the brother of Roza's boyfriend, and the one who saw Roza being kidnapped. I was rooting for him the whole time. There's also some great themes about the perception of beauty and how everyone is worthy of love or respect. It kind of a modern fairy tale and if you know me, you know I eat that shit up. Hope I've convinced you to give it a try as well.

To be honest, I had no clue what this book was about when I first picked it up. I saw some people talking about it on Twitter and was immediately enthralled and curious to find out more about it. Let me just tell you ... one of the best decisions I've ever made. Really. Bone Gap is a mysterious, utterly confusing but highly enjoyable book that will keep you guessing about what's actually going on throughout the whole book. No boring moments, no plot holes (at least not obvious to me) and no cringe-worthy romances or anything like that. Instead it captivates you with brilliant, well fleshed-out characters that are all so different and weird/funny/sweet in their own way so by the end of it you'll love (almost) everyone. The beautiful writing is another huge bonus because, seriously, I couldn't get enough of it. Laura Ruby definitely knows how to write things so they sound beautiful and lyrical. I loved it! The characters and plot line were both incredibly interesting and just felt whole to me ... you know what I mean? Yes, I was confused most of the time and had no clue what's actually happening but that's exactly what I needed. It's what this makes a great book! And in the end everything makes sense. You get this "Ahaaa!" moment when it clicks and every puzzle piece finds its place - which feels amazing, by the way. But speaking of characters ... let's start off with Finn. He's seen as the weird guy, a bit crazy and no one really takes him seriously but actually ... he knows a lot of things. It's just that no one believes him and if everyone thinks you're crazy ... maybe it's true? Finn is a brilliant character - the way he changes throughout the book made my heart swell with pride and happiness because HECK YES! I knew he's the brave and clever guy no one wanted to see. And our beloved Petey? Oh man, where do I even start? She's an "ugly" girl, tough and brutally honest with a sharp tongue which I loved. Also, she's raising bees and while I do hate all (buzzing) insects I was so fascinated and intrigued by her. Then there's Sean, Finn's bigger brother, who's quiet and composed and so in love with Roza. Speaking of Roza ... she's probably one of the most important things of this book. She's been kidnapped - which Finn saw but no one believed him - and is an incredible character on her own. I loved her right from the beginning. Her story, her background ... she's just great. To not spoil anything, I won't go into more detail. Are you curious? You wanna know more about speaking corn, horses, honey and bees? You want to read a book with characters that you'll love and a storyline so confusing (in a good way!) but interesting which will keep you hooked till the very last page? Then go pick up Bone Gap IMMEDIATELY.
