Thirty years earlier: The young Franz Laurenz has traveled to Brazil to attend a Candomblé ritual. He encounters a young female doctor and a demon from the New Testament apocrypha.

2011: In a hospital in Jerusalem, where Laurenz hoped to speak with Rachel Kannai, a deadly pestilence spreads. When Anselmo succeeds in hacking the hospital’s security cameras, he sees the full scope of the horror. Even more unsettling are the drawings the pope brings to the Rachel Kannai’s sickbed.

At the same time, a powerful, ancient society meets in a bunker facility on Spitsbergen. They’re concerned that the pope has not delivered the Book of Dzyan and that he's disappeared without a trace. But there’s also a new lead: Father Anselmo.
