This book feels a bit more serious than the science fiction I usually read, not because it is, but because the inspiration it draws from is not just some hypothetical future or some aspect of our present pulled to its extreme, but from a very real historical past that we have learned about in history lessons. The characters in this book therefore feel even more explicitly like stand-ins for real people and their experiences, even if the characters in science fiction usually do to some extent. This made it very hard to read, because you can't help but think of all the people that experienced the real-world equivalent, but that's also part of what makes reading books like these worth it: They are reminders that if we don't take actions against it, we might very well end up doing the same things again to different people in a different time and a slightly different situation. And yet this book is also full of world-building that leaves a lot of questions open that one can explore in one's mind, which is always a draw in sci-fi and fantasy worlds. The ending is not quite what I hoped for, but it stays true to the rest of the book and is realistic, and so I am satisfied.
Ich finde es schwierig An Unkindness of Ghosts von Rivers Solomon zu bewerten. Ich mochte den Anfang der Geschichte sehr und ich mochte auch das Ende. Ich mochte auch die Figuren, besonders Aster und Theo, und ihre Komplexität, sowie die Themen, welche aufgegriffen werden. Die Handlung selbst jedoch wirkte oftmals etwas ziellos und zog sich dadurch besonders im Mittelteil doch ziemlich. Wohl auch aufgrund des Hörbuchs, viel es mir zudem teilweise schwer den Überblick zu behalten über alle Figuren und ihre Motive. Irgendwie verlor ich zwischenzeitlich etwas das Interesse. Wobei mich auch die Brutalität teilweise etwas davon abschreckte weiterhören zu wollen. Das Ende wurde dann jedoch richtig spannend und gefiehl mir gut.
