4.5
Miserable
This book made me miserable reading it but I finally finished it after 1,5 months. EVERY character is a bad person. Even the main character who is mostly boring as fuck is a "not like other girls"-girl and thinks that women who are sleeping with the town fuckboy are "weak". There is some interesting world building in there but it's being buried in a "character driven story" where I hated every single character. I honestly doubt I will pick up the second book except maybe when I'm stuck in a reading slump and need to read something without pressure of having to actually like it which should tell you everything you need to know.
This book felt weirdly nostalgic, the writing reminded me of some middle-grade books I read in my childhood. I also listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator was brilliant so that bumped up my rating a bit. The protagonist was a little bland but the fact that she was so ordinary and sweet was rather endearing. And she did grow a spine throughout the course of the book. I really enjoyed her relationship with her future husband, as well as with his aunt. They're both really interesting characters, Thorn is still an enigma in some ways and I really like the slow-burn romance they've got going on. The politics were interesting and the magical abilities pretty original. All in all, a solid debut.

I liked the beginning and the end, but the middle wasn't my cup of tea
4,5 stars I honestly did not expect to like this book as much as I did. My niece has borrowed it from the library, and since she didn't like it she gave it to me to read, and I basically inhaled the whole book within a few days. The world is so different from anything I have ever read, and the characters are super interesting. I find that I typically love fantasy books which are set in a court, and where the main character is caught up in many court intrigues, and this book definitely delivers on that front. Also: I kind of got enemies to (potential) lovers vibes from our two main characters, which I always love to read about! This first book ended in kind of a cliffhanger, so I sure hope that I can read the next book in the series asap!
AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh
2.5 ⭐️ from me. I enjoyed the start, but felt it got very slow and unnecessarily convoluted from around halfway in.
