The young, naive, and astonishingly beautiful Dorian Gray meets the cynical and hedonistic Lord Wotton, with whom he begins to explore the more pleasurable, less ethical sides of London. While he enjoys a life of sin and excess, his innocent beauty remains untainted, almost as if he'd made a devil's bargain to keep it.
Wilde's only novel was considered indecent and corruptive when it was published in 1891 - in particular because of its implied homoeroticism. Today it is renowned one of the most famous Gothic novels, a timeless classic and an inspiration for countless other books and movie adaptations. Oscar Wilde wurde 1854 in Dublin geboren. Der Vater war Leibarzt der Königin Viktoria, seine extravagante Mutter führte einen intellektuellen Salon nach französischem Muster. Wilde studierte erst am Trinity College in Dublin, dann in Oxford, wo er sich mehr und mehr einem Ästhetizismus zuwandte, den er nicht nur in der Kunst, sondern auch im Leben zum Maß aller Dinge machte. 1884 heiratete er in London; 1885 und 1886 kamen seine beiden Söhne zur Welt. In den folgenden Jahren entfremdete er sich zunehmend von seiner Frau und wurde sich wohl auch seiner homoerotischen Neigungen deutlicher bewusst. Gleichzeitig nahm sein Ruhm stetig zu; in rascher Folge entstanden Essays, sein einziger Roman "Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray", die Märchen, Erzählungen und mehrere Theaterstücke.1895 wurde er wegen seiner Liebesbeziehung zum jungen Lord Alfred Douglas in einen Prozess mit dessen Vater verwickelt, der ihm zum Verhängnis wurde: Wilde wurde zu Zwangsarbeit verurteilt und war nun gesellschaftlich, aber auch künstlerisch mit einem Schlag erledigt. 1897 aus seiner Einzelzelle entlassen, floh er nach Frankreich, unternahm noch einige Reisen in die Schweiz und nach Italien und starb 1900 resigniert in einem Pariser Hotel.

Meist weiß ich zu Klassikern nicht wirklich etwas zu sagen, aber hier bin ich mir absolut sicher, dass es mir gefällt. Oscar Wilde hat natürlich eine sehr poetische Art zu schreiben, so sehr, dass es manchmal definitiv drüber ist. Und Harry ist ja wohl einer der schlimmsten Charaktere aller Zeiten. Dennoch wird genau dieses Bild des Teufels Advokaten immer aktuell bleiben und das Buch mit seinen vielen Zitaten auf jede Epoche anwendbar sein. Und die Moral von der Geschicht - Männer, denen alles in die Wiege gelegt wird, erkennen die Konsequenzen ihrer eigenen Handlungen nicht. Chapeau, Oscar and Rest in Peace.
What a book, a true classic! Still most relevant and contemporary. The language is a mere beauty, an artwork in itself. However, at the same time, some passages about perfumes, jewellery & Co were a bit tiring (although I see the intend of the passages…), so that I would subtract half a star and end up with 4.5 ⭐️. Dorian, the innocence and beauty, who progressed to a soulless, superficial shell. Lord Henry, a mephisto-like character, the antihero. And Basil, the naive, beauty-seeking artist (does he foresees the evilness in Dorian?), the opposing figure. Sibyll, who has just a small but really tragic role. True love can only be for the person within! The book has so many philosophical layers - I am sure I missed a lot. Beauty and Art, Influence and Manipulations, Morality and Consequences. The book is ever-present after I finished reading it, there is so much to digest and dissect. What stood out for me was the appeal to not overemphasis the look and appearance and not forget about the inner values. Dorian cannot survive without his soul and consciousness. At least, this is how I read the end. One lesson: You have to be true to yourself and do not listen too much to manipulative influences! Both aspects makes the book so relevant to our modern (social media) society. Deep connections matter! While reading I really loved how the book is a cruel parody of the upper societies of the Victorian era. They simply live a superficial and worthless life. I am sure that this book really agitated „the people“.
