The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes – they were mutineers. The first group responded with counter-charges of their own, of a tyrannical and murderous captain and his henchmen. While stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death—for whomever the court found guilty could hang.

Unterhaltsam und liest sich wie ein Roman.
Grann hat hier ein sehr unterhaltsames Buch geschrieben. Er verwendet als Quellen primär die Logbücher der Überlebenden der Reise und schweisst eine sehr packende Geschichte über die Odysse der Wager zusammen. Gleichzeitig erfahren wir vieles über die Zustände in England, der Royal Navy und auch über die Eingeborenen Völker der Küsten Südamerikas. Für alle zu empfehlen, die Seefahrtsgeschichten und Abenteuer mögen! Werde mir bestimmt auch mal "Killers of the Flower Moon" zu Gemüte führen.
Spannende Seefahrtsnacherzählung
Ich habe von David Grann bereits Killers of the Flower Moon gelesen und war etwas überrascht als ich als weiteres Buch von ihm eine Nacherzählung einer Seefahrt aus dem 18. Jahrhundert gefunden habe. Allerdings war dieses Buch sehr spannend und voller interessanter Details. Man lernt sehr viel zu der damaligen britischen Marine und das Leben auf hoher See und der Teil zu Schiffbruch und Meuterei macht das Ganze noch spannender. Darüber hinaus werden sehr gut die vielen und teils widersprüchlichen Erzählungen sehr gut einander gegenüber gestellt. Hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht zu lesen. Kriegt von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung.
Großartig!
Das Buch war ein Coverkauf und ich hätte nicht erwartet, dass es mich so faszinieren würde. Aber es ist wirklich großartig! Wir begleiten die Crew der Wager, die 1740 einen Geheimauftrag der britischen Krone erhält, jedoch Schiffbruch erleidet. Das Buch ist kein Fantasiewerk, sondern rekonstruiert wahre Geschichte auf eine detaillierte und emotionale Art. So sehr ich Schiffe und die See liebe, romantisch war das damals nicht. Die körperlichen Torturen der Seemänner sind immens, Zerwürfnisse innerhalb der Crew, Hunger, Krankheit und nicht zuletzt einfach die menschliche Natur mit ihren Abgründen innerhalb von Extremsituationen. Als wäre es nicht genug, diese Stapatzen zu überstehen, müssen sich die wenigen Überlebenden auch noch mit dem drohenden Tod duch die englischen Gesetze auseinandersetzen. Ein jeder für sich allein. Ich habe total mitgefiebert, was mir bei Non Fiction Literatur so auch noch nicht passiert ist. Der Autor schafft es Geschichte lebendig zu machen. Das Buch hatte auch ein paar Bilder mit Portraits und Landschaftsdarstellungen, die die eigene Vorstellung toll untermalt haben. Nur eine Karte vom gesamten Verlauf der Reise hätte ich mir noch gewünscht, um nicht immer auf GoogleMaps nachschauen zu müssen. Große Empfehlung für alle, die sich für Geschichte und Schifffahrt interessieren. Für mich war es bisher eines meiner Jahreshighlights.
An incredible and disturbing voyage
If you're ever going to read just one non-fiction book, let it be this one! Wow! This was my first non-fiction book and I really couldn't have picked a better one! The Wager is an incredible tale about endurance, survival and the dangers of life at sea. Reading this book felt like watching a high-budget, well-researched documentary. There are so many details, side-notes and additional information about the navy forces, ships, bureaucracy, sickness, sea battles and the every-day life of seafarers. The fact that so many documents about The Wager crew's fate have survived is incredible in itself. But to see all of it put together into a coherrent tale to enjoy and explore is phenomenal. David Grann has given these men a voice, and I found myself very moved by their words, their hopes and despair, time and time again. One might go into this book and expect a typical tale of mutiny, betrayal and the depths of human abysses. But Grann proves that humans are, and have always been, complex, social and so much more than their superiors might think of them. I expected a ragged crew, deceitful and egoistical. But I found a tale about ordinary men who are caught in the machinery of ambitious powerful leaders and their greedy empires. I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy tales of adventure, sea voyages and historical depth. And if you're planning to write your own book about sea voyages, piracy and mutiny, The Wager will make an exceptional ressource.
A tale of the sea like no other - this work depicts the abyss of human nature like seldom any other beforehand
I don't read many non-fiction books but I'm convinced barely any other work can uphold to this particular one. The writing and research that gone into it to reconstruct the whole story with all its viewpoints is outstanding, especially in the second half. The story itself is dark and does not deserve 4,5 stars but tied to the history it represents - regarding the cruelty of humanity and empires - it weights heavily.
Still not quite sure what to think.
I think I started this book at the wrong time. The beginning didn’t catch me & I had a really hard time getting into the story. But after I finally got into it, I absolutely enjoyed it. Problem is, after that point came, I finished it so fast, just because there wasn’t much left of the book. Honestly, I will have to read it again. Normally this is exactly a book I would have loved reading & I hope a second reading can give me the reading experience I expected from this book. So no rating for now.

Unterhaltsam und liest sich wie ein Roman.
Grann hat hier ein sehr unterhaltsames Buch geschrieben. Ich habe von David Grann bereits Killers of the Flower Moon gelesen und war etwas überrascht als ich als weiteres Buch von ihm eine Nacherzählung einer Seefahrt aus dem 18. Jahrhundert gefunden habe. Allerdings war dieses Buch sehr spannend und voller interessanter Details. Man lernt sehr viel zu der damaligen britischen Marine und das Leben auf hoher See und der Teil zu Schiffbruch und Meuterei macht das Ganze noch spannender. Darüber hinaus werden sehr gut die vielen und teils widersprüchlichen Erzählungen sehr gut einander gegenüber gestellt. Hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht zu lesen. Kriegt von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung.
