As each new decade begins, the Sun’s power must be replenished so that Sol can keep traveling along the sky and keep the chaotic Obsidian gods at bay. Sol selects ten of the most worthy semidioses to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The winner carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol, but the loser has the greatest honor of all―they will be sacrificed to Sol, their body melted down to refuel the Sun Stones, protecting the world for another ten years.

Teo, a seventeen-year-old Jade semidiós and the trans son of the goddess of birds, isn't worried about the Trials . . . at least, not for himself. His best friend, Niya is a Gold semidiós and a shoo-in for the Trials, and while he trusts her abilities, the odds of becoming the sacrifice is one-in-ten.

But then, for the first time in over a century, the impossible happens. Sol chooses not one, but two Jade competitors. Teo, and Xio, the thirteen-year-old child of the god of bad luck. Now they must compete in five trials against Gold opponents who are more powerful and better trained. Worst of all, Teo’s annoyingly handsome ex-best friend and famous semidiós Hero, Aurelio is favored to win. Teo is determined to get himself and his friends through the trials unscathed―for fame, glory, and their own survival.

Hochspannend bis zur letzten Seite! Ich habe die Panem-Vibes geliebt und Teo war so ein toller Protagonist. Aber auch Niya, Aurelio und co. sind mir sehr ans Herz gewachsen. Ich weiß absolut nicht, wie ich noch ein Jahr auf die Fortsetzung warten soll.

This was a very fun story. For the most part it felt like Hunger Games + Divergent packed in a south american mythology setting and I mean that in the best was possible. Loved the Disability and Queerness Rep and the setting was beautifully done and Thomas created really strong images. The book took it's time which I really liked but sadly the ending felt very rushed in comparison just throwing items in our heroes faces that you are supposed to forget til the next book so that they can then have a cool moment saving the day. Near the End the book also gave me more and more Percy Jackson vibes and I'd go as far as to say that it drippled into middle grade instead of YA territory. Overall this was really cool and I'm very much looking forward to the next book!

Dieses Buch wurde als "Percy Jackson meets Hunger Games" gepitcht und das kommt in der Geschichte definitiv rüber. Junge Halbgötter, die sich in einem Wettkampf um Leben und Tod messen müssen - das klingt erst einmal wie eine Mischung aus altbekannten Stoffen. Das südamerikanische Setting und die kulturellen Einflüsse geben dem Buch einen eigenen Touch, allerdings reicht das meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz, um es wirklich aus dem Meer an Young Adult Fantasy hervorzuheben. Nach einem Prolog, in dem die mythologische Lore der Welt erläutert wird, lernt man Teo kennen, den wirklich liebenswerten Helden der Geschichte. Er ist trans und hat aufgrund seiner weniger glamourösen Herkunft nie damit gerechnet, am Wettbewerb teilnehmen zu können. Irgendwie ist der Funke bei mir nicht komplett übergesprungen. Mir hat es zu lang gedauert, bis der Wettbewerb endlich los geht und die vielen Charaktere und Namen waren selbst mit Spanischkenntnissen manchmal schwer auseinanderzuhalten. Außerdem hätte ich mir, vor allem anfangs, mehr Worldbuilding gewünscht. Ich wusste lange nicht so recht, wie fantastisch oder technologisiert die Welt eigentlich sein soll und wurde komplett aus der Immersion gerissen, als auf einmal Instagram und TikTok erwähnt wurden, die in der Geschichte leicht abgeänderte Namen haben. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich den zweiten Band lesen werde, zumal er am Ende dieses Buchs als Roadtrip-Geschichte angeteasert wird, was nicht gerade mein Genre ist.

Very much feels like more fantastical Hunger Games but in the best way possible The story - especially the dialogue - is extremely dorky while also managing to balance humor and tension, doing a great job of bringing across the fear the characters experience Excited for whatever comes next

All in all it was an okay read. Some parts I enjoyed, some parts annoyed me. Maybe I will read the second book, because i'm interested in how the story continues.What I liked:The diversity!!The different trials and cities Sometimes it was funnyThe mythology What I disliked:There were just too many characters. They told us about one of the gods and when they were mentioned again I completely forgot who that person was and how they looked like because there were so many new characters and names in between (A character glossary would be really helpful)I NEED a map, can't understand why they didn't include onepop culture references in fantasy books are my new ICK!!! The ending was so rushed!! (And also predictable but I knew that before I bought the book so it's half as bad)

Ich brauche Band 2, SOFORT!!!! Ich liebe einfach alles daran, ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass ich noch begeisterter sein könnte als bei Cemeterd Boys, aber Aiden Thomas hat sich nochmal selbst übertroffen. Definitiv ein Jahreshighlight! Aber WTF XIO YOU BETRAYER, I TRUSTED YOU

Very Percy Jackson meets Hunger Games but a lot more diverse. It was a bit predictive but overall very enjoyable

Eres un ruidoso, impulsivo e insistente justiciero —interrumpió. —Y eso incomoda a las personas, pero no significa que seas malo. En realidad, significa que eres bueno. Mucho mejor que todos los que nos quedamos callados por temor. QUE LIBRO MAS BUENO. ¿Quieres leer un libro que parece una mezcla de Percy Jackson y Los juegos del hambre pero con personajes LGBTQIA+? Este libro es perfecto. Es que no tengo palabras para describirlo...no puedo esperar al segundo. Ya necesito que salga.
