The colour of magic has been one of my favourite films since I was a kid. I love Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is my favourite book of all time. No surprise then, that I adore this first book of the disc world verse immensely. It’s funny, suspenseful, completely absurd and criticising society at every turn, if you look close enough (sometimes it outright jumps in your face though). I’m also very grateful, that the film was apparently well made, since it’s pretty close to the book.

Incredible. I didn't remember a thing from two years ago during my first voyage to Discworld so it was almost like reading it again for the first time. And God if Rincewind isn't my honest to god patronus.

Ich habe nach ca. der Hälfte abgebrochen. Leider war das nichts für mich. Ich fand die Handlung ziemlich langweilig, zwar ab und zu ganz witzig, aber nicht dass ich hätte lachen müssen. An Walter Moers' Zamonien reicht die Scheibenwelt meiner Meinung nach nicht heran, weder vom Weltenaufbau und ganz gewiss nicht sprachlich. Ich habe das Buch auf englisch gelesen und daher nicht alles 100% verstanden, was aber nicht unbedingt hinderlich für mich ist. Ich habe auch schon andere Fantasybücher auf englisch gelesen, Sachbücher lese ich hauptsächlich auf englisch und habe keine Probleme damit. Ich habe durchaus vor, der Scheibenwelt in Zukunft noch eine Chance zu geben, aber erstmal steht Good Omens auf meiner Liste. Vielleicht kann ich damit ja mehr anfangen, besonders da Pratchett hier mit Neil Gaiman zusammen geschrieben hat und ich Letzteren sehr gerne mag.

Typischer Pratchett

Mehr muss man eigentlich nicht sagen. Wer Pratchett kennt und liest, weiß es eh, wer ihn kennt stolpert früher oder später drüber. Rincewind hat mir so leid getan. Eigentlich wollte er doch nur seine Ruhe. Und diese Parodie auf Tourismus! Großartig!!! Endet mit einem fiesen Cliffhanger (literally) und eigentlich müsste ich jetzt sofort das nächste bestellen. 💜 Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP), bleibt ein Genie und einer der ganz großen.

The first of many books with the spirit of the great Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy.

If the hitchhikers guide was set in a magical setting, this would be the result. Rincewind and Twoflowers stumble from situation into situation and there is no end in sight. All in all, this one is better than the hitchhikers guide since it sets up a coherent world very early on that is less convoluted and has individuals that already have more character than their sci-fi counterparts.

Strange but amusing book. I think if you are a fan of the humour found in books like the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy you'll enjoy it. Found he over over used some phases a bit.

I never realized how much it means to me that Rincewind is an admitted and absolute coward. This makes him such an awesome hero, in that he is much more relatable and a much more interesting character. Being afraid and still doing the right thing, showing kindness - that really is the beating heart in the middle of Pratchett's biting satire. Otherwise it would just be making fun of people. I might be mean and judgmental about self help books, but I would bet my right arm that you get more understanding on how to maybe live your life, and about our world and its people in general, from these books that are set on a discworld carried on the backs of four giant elephants which are in turn standing on a giant turtle floating through space, than from any pseudo-intellectual manifestos that promise you unique insights that will definitely help you. Also, the humour is still unmatched. Laugh-out-loud funny

Ein ganz ganz großartiger Fantasy-Klassiker:!

grandiose Geschichte in einer wahnsinnig kreativen Welt, fantastische (in jedem Sinne des Wortes) Charaktere! Das Buch sprüht vor Charme, Wortwitz und absurd komischen Situationen und Szenen... Um alles zu entdecken, was hier eingearbeitet worden ist, muss man dieses Buch mehrmals lesen. Und ich bin sicher, dass ich mich dadurch nicht langweilen werde...

I was confused for so much of it but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Will definitely read more discworld books when I get the chance.The little jokes cropping up made me laugh and I really enjoyed the humor of the book.
