THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

One of New York Times Book Review's "summer reads guaranteed to make your heart thump and your skin crawl"; An Amazon Best of the Month Pick; Named a must-read summer book by The Washington Post, USA Today, Vulture, BuzzFeed, Forbes, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, New York Post, Good Housekeeping, E!, PopSugar, CrimeReads, Thrillist, and BookRiot.

It’s November 1991. Nirvana's in the tape deck, George H. W. Bush is in the White House, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the shocking murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father—or so he says.

The longer she sits in the passenger seat, the more Charlie notices there’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t want her to see inside the trunk. As they travel an empty, twisty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly anxious Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s jittery mistrust merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

One thing is certain—Charlie has nowhere to run and no way to call for help. Trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse played out on pitch-black roads and in neon-lit parking lots, Charlie knows the only way to win is to survive the night.

3,75 ⭐️ I liked the book, the writing and the end Also loved that it had two „twists“ The first one (the Campus Killer being Robbie) at some point I could see coming tbh, the second one (it being a literal movie) not so much I think it’s so cute Jake is her husband now I kinda love them together. All in all good novel but the twists could have been a bit more shocking.

just sitting there, having my unpopular opinions

I think I have figured out what bothers me about Riley Sager's books: They have a super cool premise, and the execution of them is actually really decent until halfway through the book, but the twists which reveal why the plot is happening the way it does, really lets me down every single time. I think that this book would actually work very well as a movie, but the twists at the end, and the WHY were just not strong enough for me to really give it more than 3 stars, even though I really enjoyed the first half of the book. Also: using a character's mental illness as a plot-devise/twist? Not a good look tbh.

Well, I thought that it would be a good idea to give other authors I normally would not read anything from, a go. But this book, ehh I have no words to say. I dont like how stupid the character is written down. I know that not every character is a good one, but this? I dont know what the author was thinking when he planned his characters,or if he did planned the characters. It just gets worse when the story goes on, so yeah, will never read it again

I actually didn’t like the turn the story took but the beginning and the end made up for that!! 3,5 ⭐️

People don't want to admit that there are monsters in their midst, so the monsters continue to roam free and the cycle of violence and blame continues. Riley Sager has NOT done it again. While I absolutely LOVED [b:Home Before Dark|50833559|Home Before Dark|Riley Sager|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1571683410l/50833559._SX50_SY75_.jpg|73695354], this one couldn't hold up against it. What I probably disliked the most was the fact that I could TELL that a man has written it. Let me give you two examples: "She'd been pretty one, before guilt and grief had sunk their claws into her." "It didn't matter that she was chubby and showed too much skin..." In a thriller, there is absolutely no need to judge the appearance of women. ESPECIALLY when the main character and narrator is a woman herself. Listen, I'm her to be entertained and not to judge the appearance of fictional female characters. Adding to that, the different POVs took away the suspense of Charlie's doubts and disbelief. Unfortunaley, she's got to be one of the worst main characters I've ever encountered. She just agrees to get into a stranger's car after her best friend got murdered? This has got to be THE most unrealistic portrayal of a female character... The worst part, however, is the fact that Charlie married her KIDNAPPER. The book just left me frustrated. Yet I know that I'm probably going to devour [b:The House Across the Lake|58909880|The House Across the Lake|Riley Sager|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1639618949l/58909880._SY75_.jpg|92821047]... The Campus Killer? Revealed to be her (ex-)boyfriend.

3.5

Were the characters believable? Eh.But were they clever? Hell, no.Did I need a lot of suspension of disbelief? Oh yes.Did I see the plot twists coming? From a mile away.Did I enjoy reading this book? Hell, yes! This was a wild ride and also a quick read. I liked the execution and although all of the above applies, I enjoyed the experience of reading this story a lot and I was never bored or annoyed. So I guess you will have to decide for yourself if this is for you.
