Beschreibung

In order to save my father, I have to marry the God of Death.
River of Shadows is a spicy, captivating, and atmospheric adult dark fantasy romance inspired by Finnish mythology, from the New York Times bestselling author of Black Sunshine. Perfect for those who want Hades/Persephone and Beauty and the Beast vibes with a dark Nordic folklore twist.
When 24-year old Hanna Heikkinen's estranged father dies, she reluctantly makes the trip to Northern Finland for his funeral. Being in the enchanting land of ice and snow feels miles away from Hanna's busy life back in Los Angeles, especially under the complicated circumstances.
But when Hanna discovers that her father's body is missing, that's when things really get weird. A mysterious man, Rasmus, tells Hanna the truth: her father was a powerful shaman who went into Tuonela, the Realm of the Dead, in order to barter for more life, and has been held captive by Tuoni, the God of Death. The only way her father can be freed is if she travels with Rasmus into the mythical underworld to rescue him.
Willing to do anything to have a second-chance with her father, Hanna accompanies Rasmus into the dark and bloody realm, traveling via the River of Shadows, stalked by dangerous creatures, monsters, and the living dead, until they finally come into the haunted kingdom ruled by Death and his family.
Only for her to be captured and held prisoner by the God of Death himself.
Turns out Death is intrigued by Hanna's beauty and fierceness and makes a bargain with her. If she marries him, and spends an eternity in the Realm of the Dead as his wife, he'll set her father free.
But even the most noble sacrifices come with hidden costs, and Hanna's might involve the most unexpected of all things: her heart.

NOTE: River of Shadows is the first book of the Underworld Gods series and is not related to any other previous books. While it fits in the sub-genre "dark fantasy" it is NOT dark enough to be considered a "dark romance." That said, it does contain dub con, captive situations, graphic sex scenes, filthy language, and scary situations, so sensitive readers (especially those sensitive to dubious consent) please take heed of this warning. It also ends on a cliffhanger.

I wanted this book soooooo badly to be good. It was promising because the world and mythology is intriguing and completely different from what I’ve read so far. I wanted to like Hanna so badly but she has no real character development and plainly said- she’s boring. So so boring. The author describes her as feisty but that’s just not true. Death is sexy- and that’s it. They both f*** and he’s suddenly soooo obsessed and possessed by is own di**. Sorry but NO. The moment she’s in that castle NOTHING happens beside him f**** her from behind and saying real CRINGE-worthy shit like “cream”. I just can’t. I waited for the plot to resurface because there was some good Basis from the first 100 pages but as you may have guesses: NO damn chance.

Beauty and the beast meets hades and Persephone

Wirklich angenehmer Read. Teil an

This was somehow underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong - I had my fun. But it was not what I expected, or hoped, it to be. Hanna is a Social Media Manager From L.A. thrown into the Underworld without knowing that it even existed. Whilst she was not super annoying or dumb or anything particularly off-throwing, I somehow did not connect to her. I’m hoping to see some more fight insight of her in the next book. After all she’s supposed to be a pro at combat techniques. Death on the other hand really is an intriguing character. We learned basically nothing about his character but enjoyed him nonetheless. But generally this book introduced tons of different aspects about the world and plotlines which all weren’t really discovered and explained that much. I desperately hope that this was just the beginning to the story and things will get exciting in the next book. Cause this was so slow and unexciting? Nothing really happened over the course of a bit over 300 pages. Especially once Hanna was with Death in his home, the plot did not develop. And besides their interactions being entertaining there is basically no deeper connection besides awesome sex between them. At least as far as I as a reader know. They never interacted besides the nightly fucking session where things got exciting. And if I say exciting I mean it. Who knew Death is hot? He is a dirty talker and fucks like the god he is. The smut was honestly the best part of the book. So generally the writing was good. The world idea and building so far is decent and intriguing. But since their neither is a proper plot pacing and development nor any kind of developing relationship between the main characters besides sexual attraction - I can’t with a good consciousness give this a good rating. I enjoyed reading this, but I needed it to be more. And it just wasn’t. Hopefully this will get better with the second book. After at it was just the introduction into the story which seems promising to me! 3
