Im Rahmen des 'Native American Heritage Month' habe ich zu Stephen Graham Jones' 'The Only Good Indians' gegriffen. Leider konnte es mich nicht so überzeugen wie erhofft. Das liegt wahrscheinlich auch daran, dass ich wegen der metaphorischen Sprache und dem.., sagen wir mal lokalen Slang, bestimmt ein Viertel des Textes nicht verstanden habe. Doch Rezensionen auf Goodreads hadern auch mit dem Schreibstil, darum fühle ich mich nicht alleine. Dazu kommt, dass das Pacing unglaublich langsam ist. Die Grundstory um die vier verfluchten und verfolgten Freunde ist so interessant, aber ich finde, dass viel durch die Erzählgeschwindigkeit verloren geht. Meine Konzentration ist dadurch ab und an etwas abgeschweift. Nun könnte man meinen, dass es dadurch außergewöhnlich atmosphärisch wird. Leider konnte ich davon aber nichts fühlen. Sehr schade, da mir persönlich die vor allem bei Horrorgeschichten die Stimmung essentiell ist. Einzig ein paar brutale Beschreibungen, z.B. zur Ausnahme toter Elche, waren sehr bildlich und ließen mich vor Ekel schütteln. Die Repräsentation hingegen ist natürlich immens wichtig, die Einblicke in das Leben der Natives super interessant. Auch die Geschichte an sich ist ziemlich einzigartig. Und doch konnte mich das Gesamtpaket einfach nicht so richtig abholen.
Komplex, frisch, spannend. Unkonventionell, fesselnd, anspruchsvoll. Heftig, blutig, charakterintensiv. Anders kann ich das Buch im Moment leider nicht beschreiben, denn für zusammenhängende Sätze reicht es noch nicht - ich hab eine leichte Reizüberflutung 🫠. Bis auf die etwas zu lang geratenen Basketballreferenzen hat mich das Buch komplett begeistert.
Was habe ich denn da gelesen? Das Buch konnte mich leider überhaupt nicht überzeugen und ich habe es bei 55% (Seite 198) abgebrochen. Was war das?? Der Schreibstil hat mir überhaupt nicht zugesagt, die Gespräche der Charaktere waren wirr und zusammenhanglos, genau so wie die ganzen Zwischensequenzen. Die Protagonisten waren für mich austauschbar und hatten alle irgendwie den gleichen Charakter, die Story konnte mich auch nicht so richtig packen. Das große "Übel" wurde auch viel zu früh verraten. Leider gar nicht meins. Ich wollte das Buch wirklich viel mehr mögen.

Keine Ahnung, was das war... Aber gut ist meilenweit entfernt. Langweilig, Zusammenhangslos, verwirrend und überhaupt nicht spannend oder emotional. Wer auf Basketball steht, findet wenigstens etwas positives an den Buch.

DNF @ page 200 bc the writing style wasn't for me. It was confusing and very hard to follow.
Stephen Graham Jones touches a lot of serious topics Indigenous people face, all while crafting a truly suspenseful horror story that felt classic and fresh in all the good ways. I was entertained by this book, and I also feel I have learned so much from it, and for me, these are the best kinds of books.Altough I love the folk horror elements, I think the true heart of this story are the characters. They are layered and conflicted and we get to see them through their own eyes as well as through the eyes of others, we get to see their expectations of themselves, the expectations that are placed on them and how that effects every single life - theirs and the ones they touch. We see different faces of intergenerational trauma, what it does to people and how it might be overcome.It took me a minute to get used to the writing style, but it does fit the brutality and honesty of the book perfectly. And yes, this book is brutal in many ways. And honest. And I loved the endingI wholeheartedly recommend it.

This is by faaar the scariest and most haunting book I have yet had the pleasure to read. It was gruesome and I had to out it down and stare at a wall a couple of times because I couldn’t shake the graphic violence that I had read. There are pictures never to be unseen. 🧍♀️ Still this was really cleverly written, I had a bit of a rough start with getting into the plot but when I did, I couldn’t stop. 🦌🩸
the poc represention in horror! yes! i think that this book being average for me is simply a 'me' thing. i just like my horror to be more edgy and twisty.
