Spannend!

Agatha Christie never disappoints. "Death on the Nile" tells us about a successful and adorable young woman, Linnet, who was murdered during her honeymoon on a steamer. Not everything is as easy as it might seem: everyone has their own reasons to take her life. One of the most difficult cases in Poirot's career, solved, as always, brilliantly. As always, Christie's story has everything I love: ▪️well made characters, whom one can like, hate and understand at the same time; ▪️a mystery, that you cannot solve during the book, but after getting shocked in the end, you realize that the answer was on the surface the whole time; ▪️an incredibly interesting investigation during which you are constantly thinking, but not getting tired or bored of it; ▪️the captivating atmosphere of sunsets at the Nile cruise restaurant; ▪️several unusual love stories; ▪️and last, but not least, charming Poirot, from whom not a single piece of evidence can escape. This was my 5th book by Agatha Christie. Every time I think that this time I will not fall for her bait and will be able to figure out the murderer. And every time I am surprised! One of my favorite authors, whom I highly recommend to everyone.

“It often seems to me that's all detective work is, wiping out your false starts and beginning again.” “Yes, it is very true, that. And it is just what some people will not do. They conceive a certain theory, and everything has to fit into that theory. If one little fact will not fit it, they throw it aside. But it is always the facts that will not fit in that are significant.” Nothing more comforting than to read one of Agatha Christie’s adventurous mystery novels with sprawling cast ensembles in lush, exotic locations. Reading along with Christie’s twisted plots and attempting to figure out the real culprit against all the hints that are dropped along with the red herrings is always immensely pleasurable, and Death on the Nile is – deservedly – one of Christie’s most lauded efforts. I did watch the 1978 adaptation with Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Lois Chiles, Bette Davis and Maggie Smith before – but thankfully, it was long enough ago that I had completely forgotten about the twist. It took me a while to figure out what was happening! I decided to read this right in time before watching Kenneth Branagh’s newest adaptation, which unfortunately could not capture the intrigue and excitement that pulsated through the pages of Christie’s novel. The regrettable racist undertones dampened my excitement at times, but what did I expect from a novel written in 1937 by a British author. The thrilling mystery and juicy voyage across the Nile with such an illustrious cast of colorful characters more than made up for that, thankfully. I don’t know if I would call this Christie’s best work (especially since so far, I have only read four of her novels), but it’s no surprise that it’s among the most popular. “Love is not everything, Mademoiselle. […] It is only when we are young that we think it is.”

This was the second read in the #ReadChristie2022 challenge and I looked particularly forward to "Death on the Nile". The film adaptaion from 1978 is one of my favourite movies of all time, so I was excited to read the original story. I was struck by fact, how true the filmmakers stayed to the original plot. I also have to admit, that the fact that I already knew the story took away a bit of the excitment. Nevertheless this is a brilliant plot and it kept me entertained throughout the whole time I read it. I can understand, why this is one of Christie's most popular murder mysteries. Futhermore, the seeting in Egypt gives even more thrill and mystery.

This was the first Poirot mystery where I actually guessed who the killer was before the end, but that did not lessen my enjoyment of the story. I love it when a mystery is set in a remote place where were have a certain set of characters and one of them has to be the murderer. Furthermore, it seemed like all people had motives, and everyone was connected, which made me enjoy this even more! Not my favorite Poirot novel, but it's up there!
