Creatures of Power

There is a double power at work in human behaviour, the hidden power of the DNA in our cells, the genotype, and the overt power of the whole person, the phenotype. The two powers are not fully co-ordinated, so that we cannot assume that we are being guided in the right way. Also, religion and science are man-made secondary powers of questionable reliability. There is, however, deep within us, a mysterious capacity for moral, loving, and sensible behaviour independent of these other dubious influences. This inner awareness may not be perfect but it is the best guide we have and we should use it wisely for our survival and that of our fellow living organisms. We are running out of time in this over-exploited, damaged, world.
