I'm mindblown... found my new favorite book. With all due respect, please read this book or I will make you.

Absolut empfehlenswert! // The book really was a rollercoaster of emotions. If you were to compare the main character Rin at the beginning and at the end, she would be unrecognisable. The character development is so fascinating. It's not like you thought, why, why are you doing this? The decisions Rin makes are understandable, which makes the story more believable in itself. The author's writing style is very pleasant. She describes the scenes accurately, however gruesome they may be. The characters are well thought out, each has a background and the reasons that drive them. The next books in the series are of course already on the shelf. I recommend the book for young adults. Some scenes in the book are really gruesome, just like war is. The author also likes to play with history and mythology and incorporates these elements into her story. Absolutely recommendable.

Wow. Really good book, amazing debut. I fell in love with the world building. The only plot point that I did not find convincing was the fact that Rin became the "bad" guy in the end. Even though she was always putting power above anything else, I feel that it was a bit weak. Also, her connection with Speer made me raise an eyebrow. I felt she had better reasons to be vengeful than that. (Not that this point will stop me from devouring the next one).
So much pain. Can't wait to get even more destroyed.
Stumped
This is a book that depicts war in all it's depths. It's great. It's important. It's also very hard to read. The depictions are REAL and GRUESOME and though you understand the choices that are being made you can't help but feel appalled, even though at some of them you think you'd act similar. This is not just another fantasy book involving war, this is a book about war involving fantasy.
The book left me speechless multiple times and regarding many different topics.
I stumbled upon this book by following and watching lots of fantasy booktubers and everyone titled it as a "must-read" and damn they all were right and I am so glad that it was finally my "next read" on my "pile of shame". I never read the blurb of fantasy books to enjoy the full experience of the rollercoaster ride they mostly are. Blurbs (and movie and videogame trailers) often spoil too much and take the fun out of experiencing it for yourself. (best example: red rising by p. brown) thanks great tortoise that I also didn´t read the blurb on this one, and.....wow....what. a. ride. - Worth it! Of Course I knew that it plays in a far east setting and it was about....a war. but that´s it. I really had no idea, that it contained Magic and modern Speech with cuss words. The Book begins and we start with the underdog protagonist coming to an academy being the outsider and I was toooootally bummed, because I read this plot soooo many times, but thanks great tortoise, this was just the introduction and went on to a BLAST! of a book, a real pageturner, with really no downs or lengths, every character was well written, important and you get an emotional bonding to each one of them. Add a nice little dosis of magic and you suddenly feel like you're in an Pen & Paper. Then Kuang adds some horrific (really, really horrific) war scenarios and war aftermaths and you start to wonder if this is maybe over the top and unnecessary...but then you read an Interview with Kuang, where she points out, that all (!) of the war scenarios and detailed cruelty in her book are actual war crimes which happened in WWII. This Book is definitely now in my Top5 list and I can´t wait to read the whole Trilogy.
Kind of conflicting thoughts on this book. (also I spoiled myself so...) The writing style is intrecate, intruguing and you barely come up for air because so much happens. The driving force of the book are 100% the characters, which was also why I enjoyed the book so much. As the story progress Rin becomes more unhinged and I am excited to see how this moral greyness gets explored in the next books. Part 1 was definetly my favourite part of the book, just because it was one of the best introductions to a fantasy novel I have ever read. The setting of the military college, but also the getting there and seeing how determined Rin was, made this book impossible to put down. Kitay and Rin's friendship has my whole heart. Part 2 took a strong turn. It's the beginning of a war and only begins to introduce us to the atrocities that follow. Kuang did a great job in making the battle scenes significant (namely Rin and Nezha's part). We also get introduced to the Cike, and man I love these characters. Part 3 was extremly dark and that ending was wild. It's hard to put my overall thoughts on this book down. I thought it was a great book but part 3 was just a bit much for me in terms of info dumping (Chaghan reading her fortune, the Speerly lore, the gods, the betrayals,...) I also had a hard time understanding why Rin had so much faith in Altan, like when was this connection really established. I am very curious for the next book tho, since there is lots left to explore
FUCK YOUUU REBECCA
