A brilliant premise—but stuck spinning in ‘Our Infinite Hamster Wheel’ from time to time…
Evelyn has lived many lives before. In every one of them, she’s been murdered by her love, Arden. Always before her 18th birthday. But this time, she’s tired of dying before she ever truly grows up. She likes who she is now and where she is. She’s had enough of losing the people she loves. And when her sister’s life depends on her, Evelyn realises things have to change. This time, she’ll find Arden before he finds her. This time, it has to end. The main storyline is set in Wales of 2022 and is interwoven with episodes from Evelyn and Arden’s former lives. I loved the idea of jumping between the timelines and how different the characters were in their previous lives, but the sequences sometimes felt a little disconnected. The past lives themseves also lacked a bit of spark for me…there were just so many of them which made the book drag a little in the middle. When I first read the premise, I instantly fell in love with the idea of the two tethered souls reincarnating through the centuries. But the book didn’t quite deliver everything I had hoped for. The present-day plot felt sometimes far-fetched and it could have had a bit more emotional depth and complexity. The final conclusion also didn‘t entirely convince me. Still, it was fun to read. I really enjoyed the overall vibe of this book.
