"No, you're gonna eat your damn vegetables before you get to the dessert" - the author, at some point probably
QJJ had been on my TBR for a few months and I'm so glad I picked it up before continuing with 2HA. I felt quite intimidated by the politics and it took a bit for me to understand everything and get used to all the names (definitely not recommended for someone wanting to start getting into danmei, you'll cry and question your life choices. You, definitely not me, never). Nonetheless, I was drawn into the story and once things clicked into place, I was hooked and locked in, ready to finish it in one go. Sadly life is a party pooper, I finished it in 4 days. Moral of the story: the intrigues were absolutely delicious. The world and every character in it felt incredibly vivid and fleshed out, such a fascinating place to immerse yourself in. I really appreciated the map, it definitely added a lot to the reading experience, but the glossary was too short for me. I wanted to look up some names multiple times, but there was nothing to be found. Xiao Chiye and Shen Zechuan were two great protagonists, Shen Zechuan has definitely become one of my new favorite characters. I liked the two of them so much, as individuals and together. Their with poison underlined flirting and banter was delightful and a blast to read. The best enemies-to-lovers relationship I've ever read, their dynamic was incredibly powerful and well written. Book 2 & 3 are already on their way to my beautiful danmei collection, I can't wait to continue the series.
