My first review haha. So let’s go: I honestly loved this book. It was exactly what I needed and I honestly can say this is a great book. I can see why many people might dislike this one but I think Neil Gaiman did a great job. I enjoyed the main characters development and the plot twist(s)- oh how much I enjoyed them. I didn’t see them coming. I love how Neil Gaiman writes and describes things. Like 10 pages before the book ended I was really sad… i was worried about what is gonna happen on the last few pages and was a little disappointed when I thought this might be a bad ending (for what I have expected). But it changed and it was a great ending in my opinion. It was exactly what had to happen. It was exactly what Richard needed for himself and I was really happy (also sad bcs it was the ending but mostly happy and excited!)

Leider hatte es für mich ziemliche längen und es hat etwas gedauert es fertig zu lesen. Ich mochte die Charaktere, v.a. den Marquis und hätte gerne noch mehr über ihn erfahren. Dass die Welt von London Below für Richard neu ist ist klar, allerdings fühlen sich auch manche Begegnungen und Geschehnisse für mich als sehr unerklärlich an - was möglicherweise genau so gewollt ist, keine Ahnung. Hat mich auf jeden Fall wiedermal an der einen oder anderen Stelle zum Lachen gebracht, aber für mich gehört es nicht unbedingt zu einem der besseren Werke von Neil Gaiman.

Finally a fantasy book with fantasy again ;) I loved the ideas Neil Gaiman put in this book. I've seen a documentation once about those underground stations, and that beggars live there. The thought is creepy that the underground people really exist (well maybe without door, De Carabas, giant monsters etc.) I'll never be able to drive by sub in London again without taking a really close look at the people around me.

Having listened to Neverwhere as an audiobook narrated by Neil Gaiman himself, I think that is the superior way to interact with his works. Neil Gaiman writes stories that feel like being told a tale at the fireside, and after this audio experience, I feel like reading his books doesn't quite do them justice. As to the story itself: Neverwhere caught me early on with the relatability of its protagonist, Richard, who I share certain characteristics with that made me laugh when recognising them in him, and how they hinder or help him in his journey in London Below. I also very much enjoyed his journey from someone who let people walk all over him to someone who finally stands up for himself and takes his life into his own hands instead of letting it passively pass him by.

Ich muss zugeben, dass ich nicht immer alles ganz genau verstanden habe, weil mein Englisch doch langsam einrostet, aber es handelt sich dabei vielleicht um 5-6 Wörter. Nichtsdestotrotz bin ich sowas von begeistert. Ich war zudem erstaunt, wieviele Parallelen es zu den Büchern von Christoph Marzi gibt. Die Charaktere sind zwar anders und anders beschrieben - alle sehr hervorragend! - aber die Atmosphäre ist durchweg stimmig und gut gehalten. Der Spannungsbogen ist super aufgebaut gewesen und wie schon erwähnt, waren die Charaktere sehr gut beschrieben und ausgearbeitet. Und wie immer bei den Büchern, die mich begeistern, wünschte ich, es wäre viel länger gewesen :) Aber eine Fortsetzung muss der Mann nicht unbedingt schreiben *g*, sonst werd ich nur wieder arm.

I was not really expecting any romance in the book, at all. But why put a hint, and not follow through. That is the only "problem" I had with this book. Everything else is awesome. The story. The characters, yes even Jessica and Islington amd Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar. The location. The atmosphere. I was taken on a roller-coaster ride of feelings. My expectations were met. My weird mind, which predicts the ends, was surprised. Now I know why Gaiman is one of the authors praised out there.

I read this book ages ago and loved it. Now I listened to the audio book and am so torn!  For the first half I just wanted to stop listening and dnf. But after a while I started to like it. Also I didn't remember a single thing about the plot even though I read it in 2016!  I hated Richard, he was so unsure about himself and I get that it was mostly to have a lot of character development, but still....  Also Door is supposedly the female lead, but most of the plot just happened at her and she wasn't an active part in it. She was the protected damsel in distress that our incapable hero somehow had to rescue.  I loved the whole world Gaiman built for this book, London Below. Lots of colorful, quirky characters and fun details!  The audio book I listened to also had the short story "How the Marquis got his Coat Back" which added even more details to London Below. And because it focused on the Marquis I enjoyed it a lot more than the main story.

Ever thought about why London Tube stations are named as they are and why the speakers in the tube always remind you of the gap betwee platform and train? Well, Neil Gaiman has some rather unique ideas about this. I love Neil Gaiman's ideas of London Below. His style of writing animates the story and breathes life into the characters. The story is captivating and never dull. This is a classical Urban fantasy novel, but you don't feel its age, while reading (first time published in 1994, as I recall). The characters are rather unique. I have to admit I never grew warm with Richard, but this didn't destroy my entertainment. Summary: A great Urban Fantasy novel for fans of London and those who aspire to become such! If you enjoyed e.g. Rivers of London, have a look at this novel, too!

The journey with Richard was very imaginative but I didn't really liked him as a character. That made reading a bit annoying. I found the book after reading a short story from the Marquis' pov in an anthology and I would have loved to read more about him instead! The book was too short in general. It misses out on a lot of interpersonal relationships. I liked the idea of the ratspeakers and hoped that Anaesthesia would have a bigger role but instead she was gone like ten pages after her introduction. Nevertheless Richard thinks about her for the rest of the book ... that's not how I would define an important character. The writing is brilliant and I would have loved to have hundreds of pages more. The ideas are fantastic and creative, with brilliant details. I can't really criticize what's there, only that there is not enough of it.

Ich hatte gehofft, einfach gut unterhalten zu werden, und wurde mit Kopfkino vom allerfeinsten verwöhnt! Allein schon dem zum niederknien redegewandten und deliziös fiesbackigen Mr. Croup möchte ich mehr Sterne hinterherwerfen, als Goodreads auf Lager hat... Tips, womit ich beim Gaiman weitermachen könnte, wenn mir diese Richtung seiner Schreibe so ausnehmend gut gefällt?

After reading the short story in Rogues I really wanted to delve a bit more into this universe. I can really say I enjoyed every page, the characters are really unique and the overall story quite entertaining. I am just a bit sad that Neil Gaiman said he'd never continue a story..

In einer anderen Rezension habe ich gelesen: "Why the hell haven't I read more of Neil Gaiman's books?" und - man ahnt wie es weitergeht - ich stelle mir die selbe Frage. Wie konnte mir Neil Gaiman so lange entgehen? Manchmal fragt man sich ja schon, was man bisher mit seinem (lesenden) Leben gemacht hat. Mit anderen Worten: "Neverwhere" hat mich sehr begeistert. Diese unaufgeregte Art zu erzählen, kombiniert mit dem großartigen, trockenen Humor ... grandios. Es wird nicht mein letztes Buch von Neil Gaiman gewesen sein, soviel ist schon mal sicher.
