First off: I’d love to give this book a better rating, alas, I cannot and I’ll explain why. I flew through it and it entertained me greatly. I felt like in a dark fairytale at all times. This review has very, very minor spoilers, but nothing more than what you’d find in the blurb, or tiny details I use to review the story. Nothing that’ll steal your reading enjoyment. We’re following the path of two women, each of them strong in their own unique way. Both are on the same mission, with different parts they are playing. Lets start with Jasalyn, Abriellas sister we’ve known from the original „These Hollow Vows“ duologie. And here’s already where my problem lies. *I don’t think I like her that much* and it hurts to say that. I usually like the plot of characters moving on with their trauma always shadowing them, but while I get, how Jas’ trauma is immensely important for the story, it felt like that was all that her character was at times. It felt, like the trauma was her whole character. It is entirely possible that it was just too hard to read for me. I’m not trying to say it was „unrealistic“, because lets be honest: how would I know? Yet, I didn not enjoy her segments half as much as I did with the second perspective we got to look into. Felicity is a completely new character I immidiately fell in love with. She is a special kind of shifter called Echo (unlike Pretha), taking over Jasalyns life, so the shadow princess can go off on her own mission. Since she’s always pretending to be someone else, it feels like she’s struggling with finding herself and as I read her segments, I found myself always rooting for her. A big plus for me was, that she stayed in the Wild Fae lands with Misha, who’s been my favourite character in that universe. Yeah. Big simp time. Also the fact, that most of the time we didn’t even know what she looked like, made her character so flexible and fitting. When I read her describtion I could have cried (not telling you why, hehe~). Another small thing, that bugged me was how flat the protagonists from the duologie felt. Not talking about Brie, but what the hell happend to Finn? He doesn’t feel like the bonded partner of Brie, but more like her characterless guarddog, that just needs to be there because thtat’s what the duologie said. I know he’s not really part of the story, but pleaaase Lexi, give us Finnian-stans *something*!!!
