This book sounded so promising! So many authors that are on my TBR list and stories about young heroines, set during interesting time periods. Mother Carey's Table - J. Anderson Coats (1710/British North America): 2/5 A short story about a girl who poses as a boy on a pirate ship. I loved the setting but the characters just didn't do it for me. The Journey - Marie Lu (1723/The Great Land): 2,5/5 A young Inuit girl flees from her familiy's village after it was destroyed. I've never read any of Marie Lu's writing so I was quite excited, but this story didn't really hold my attention. Madeleine's Choice - Jessica Spotswood (1826/New Orleans): 4/5 A girl who belongs to the "gens de coleurs libres" has to chose between two men. I liked the setting and this time period really interests me. I was curious which one she'll choose in the end. El Destinos - Lesley Walton (1848/Southwest Texas): 2,5/5 A story about three sisters who hold control of the threads of life and death of humans. Loved the idea, but I couldn't get into it. High Stakes - Andrea Cremer (1861/Boston): 3/5 Set during the Civil War, an assassin has to protect a wealthy man. The story confused me in the beginning because I didn't expect it to be supernatural. And I still don't really know what exactly she keeps hidden underneath her glove. Still liked it though! The Red Raven Ball - Caroline Tung Richmond (1862/Washington DC): 4/5 The main character has to find a confederate spy at her grandmother's ball. Pretty gowns and detective work and an unexpected plot twist - really liked this one! Pearls - Beth Ravis (1876/Chicago): 3/5 The protagonist refuses to marry the man her father picked for her, so she left the town to become a teacher. I liked the ending, but the school kids bore me. Gold in the Roots of the Grass - Marissa Meyer (1877/Deadwood): 4/5 An American-Chinese spirit helps a ghost. Not my kind of story since I'm not a fan ghoststories, but I really liked the writing. The Legendary Garrett Girls - Y. S. Lee (1989/Skaguay): 1/5 Two sisters who own a bar. I didn't finish this one. The Color of the Sky - Elizabeth Wein (1926/Jacksonville): 3/5 Based on the death of Bessie Coleman, this story is about a girl who witnesses the death of the first female pilot. Bonnie and Clyde - Saundra Mitchell (1934/Indiana): 2/5 The shortest one. A bank-robbing girl on the run during the Great Depression. Cute read but nothing more. Hard Times - Katherine Longshore (1934/Washington State): 3/5 Rosie and a young boy named Billy meet Lloyd, who wants to interview the two hobos. This one felt kinda incomplete. City of Angels - Lindsay Smith (1945/Los Angeles): 2,5/5 One of the two LGBT stories. Two girls wait for their men to come back from WWII but fall in love with each other. The story had a really slow pace. Pulse of the Panthers - Kekla Magoon (1967/California): 3/5 Another story with one of the most interesting time periods - a young girl gets to meet the Black Panthers. One of the members, Bobby, gets closer to her. The Whole World is Watching - Robin Ralley (1968/Chicago): 2,5/5 Set during the Democratic National Convention, this one follows Jill and her friends. This is also one of the LGBT stories, but the main focus is on feminism, war and riots. An interesting read though, especially since this is still one of today's issues. overall: 42 out of 75; rounded up to 3 stars After every short story, there are author's notes offering background information and more.

Average rating: 3,56 It wasn't as badass and kickass as I wished it to be. I would have liked a more steampunk or magical realism approach on some of the stories.
