I am out of words. This book is a new favorite of mine. It is a form of art in itself, not only talking about the design of the pages but about the writing as well. Don't judge a book by its cover, because this seems simple - but there's so much behind the title you'll only understand after reading the story. The blurb also doesn't even begin to cover what this book is about, because it's about everything. This is a book about love, about family and other relationships. It's about fate as much as it is about coincidence, about rash decisions and the consequences; lies and the truth. It's about guilt, emotion and art, as well as about how they work together and against each other. It's about finding your true self and what it means to be that person. I'll Give You the Sun is a book I'll recommend to anyone ever willing to listen.

“I’ll Give you the sun” hat mehr zu bieten als nur ein hübsches Cover. Es ist eine tiefgründige Geschichte über Trauer, Verlust und Tod. Aber auch über Liebe, das erwachsen werden und das Begleichen alter Fehler. Eine zweite Chance, oder auch mehr. Man begleitet Noah und Jude, Zwillinge, jeweils zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten. Aus Noahs Perspektive wird der Sommer erzählt in dem die beiden 13/14 Jahre alt waren. Jude erzählt ihre Geschichte circa 2 Jahre später, also mit 16 Jahren. Zunächst sind die beiden ein Herz und eine Seele, beschrieben als fast schon eine Person “NoahandJude” doch jeder hat etwas mit dem er unzufrieden ist an der Momentanen Situation. Noah fühlt sich von seinem Vater vernachlässigt, Jude von der Mutter übersehen. Doch zum Ende des Sommers stirbt ihre Mutter bei einem tragischen Autounfall und das Familienleben ändert sich drastisch. Von Noah erfahren wir was den Sommer über zuvor alles vorgefallen ist weshalb die Leben der Zwillinge so entgleist sind, Jude veranschaulicht was die Auswirkungen der Geschehnisse von vor 2 Jahren sind. Das Buch ist in Abschnitte unterteilt und nachdem uns zunächst Noah die Ausgangssituation der Familie vorstellt mit einigen kleinen Makeln ist doch alles gut soweit, eine funktionale, überwiegend glückliche Familie. Und durch die viele Kunst die beschrieben wird hat sich dieser Abschnitt des Buches bunt angefühlt. Die Farben waren schon etwas ausgeblichen und verwaschen aber sie waren da. Als man dann in Judes Erzähl-Abschnitt kommt ist dagegen alles Grau, Trist und Farblos. Mir ist es zumindest beim lesen so gegangen dass in Noahs Erzählungen umso näher man dem Ende des Sommers und somit dem Unfall kam, umso weniger wurden die Farben. Bis sie schließlich mit dem Unfall gänzlich verschwunden sind. Und wenn man an diesem Tiefpunkt angekommen ist wenden sich die Dinge glücklicherweise langsam aber sicher wieder. So beginnen Jude und Noah zu verarbeiten und ihre Fehler aufzuarbeiten,Lügen aufzuklären und finden letztendlich auch wieder zueinander. Die Farbe kehrt zurück kräftiger als je zuvor mit all ihrer Strahlkraft und es entfaltet sich ein wunderschön konzipiertes Happy End. Ich habe das Buch sehr gemocht und würde es sofort weiterempfehlen wenn man mal ein ernsteres Buch möchte nicht nur cozy Liebesromane. (Ich rede hier aber natürlich von dem Film den ich persönlich beim lesen vor dem Inneren Auge gesehen habe. Möglicherweise lässt sich das auch stilistisch begründen aber ich habe nicht darauf geachtet.)

Beautiful story. So inspirational to read, I fell in love with the story and the writing style. Wasn't able to put it down. Definitely one of my top favourite books. It's one of those stories that just entirely occupies your mind and doesn't let you go. But at the same time it inspires you to re-think a whole lot outside of the book and just make you think a dozen new thoughts on every page turn. Absolutely loved it.

No. No no no no no no no. DNF after 191 pages. I tried, I really tried to read this but picking it up felt like such a chore. I absolutely despised the writing and I didn’t care for the characters at all. What was really off-putting was also the fact that one POV is from a 13-year old boy. 13! Adding to that, the chapters were way too long, nearly 100 pages! I was in the middle of the fourth (!) chapter before I decided to DNF it. There were a lot of weird metaphors, the characters were insufferable and a storyline was nowhere to be found. I remember Booktube hyping this book and Goodreads rating shows how much people seem to love it but I couldn’t deal with it. I think I would have liked it better if I had read it immediately after buying it in 2016. This book gives me major John Green vibes – quirky special snowflakes, metaphors left and right. To me, this is so typical for YA in the 2010s. Scenes like I wish I were a horse. […] “I’m so happy I’m not a horse!” He’s laughing for real like yesterday. “Dude, you are the strangest person ever. Did you actually just say you’re so happy you’re not a horse?” or “She can’t come. She has to go to ubudowasow for sodojioka-“ I’m just making sounds, throwing syllabelles together, hoping they’ll collide and find a meaning in Brian’s head […] annoyed and irritated me. I really hoped I’d have the patience to finish this book but to me, it was just unbearable.

Ok so it literally took me forever to get into this book (about 150-200 pages) but once I did I absolutely loved the story. Jandy Nelson's writing style is rather unique and honestly not my cup of tea since I feel like she sometimes tries to hard to be different. However the story was utterly beautiful. I loved Jude and Noah and especially Oscar! So that's why I'm giving 4 stars even though I wasn't expecting to like it that much after reading the first half of the book.

I want to give half of this book two stars tops, because it felt so pretentious and full of over-used tropes. Mother dies? Check. Rape? Check. A few too many coincidences (you can see coming from miles away)? Check. But on the other hand, the rest of it really made me feel something. I started to really care about both twins, especially towards the end, and wanted to know the whole story for sure and see everything (and everyone) come together. Also, it might have kind of inspired me? At least I feel like I really want to make art right now, more so than I have in a pretty long time. And okay, maybe in the end some things were too easily solved, but honestly, I wanted all of them to be okay so much that I didn't really care.

"Meeting your soul mate is like walking into a house you've been in before - you will recognize the furniture, the pictures on the wall, the books on the shelves, the contents of drawers: you could find your way around in the dark if you had to." So hat es sich auch angefühlt, dieses Buch zu lesen. Es war wie nach Hause kommen, ohne je dort gewesen zu sein. Es fällt mir sehr schwer, in Worte zu fassen, was ich über diese Buch denke, weil ich einfach viel mehr empfinde. Ich bin durch die Seiten geflogen und habe das Buch voll mit Post-Its geklebt, weil es so viele wunderbare lustige, tiefsinnige und traurige Zitate gab, die ich hervorheben wollte. Die Charaktere sind so klar gezeichnet, dass man ihre Handlungen immer nachvollziehen kann und die Geschichte selbst ist so in sich abgestimmt, dass es sogar problemlos funktioniert, die Geschichte aus zwei Zeiten zu erzählen. Die ganzen Kunst-Referenzen haben mir total gut gefallen, weil ich sie als Hobbyzeichnerin total nachvollziehen konnte. Die Gefühle, die dieses Buch vermittelt, sind einfach echt. Das Buch zu beenden, tat mir im Herzen weh, am liebsten hätte ich es für immer weitergelesen und Jude und Noah weiter auf ihrer Reise begleitet. Große Empfehlung! Wenn es euch irgendwie möglich ist: Lest dieses Buch!! Für mich ist es schon jetzt ein Highlight.
