I’ve been reading this for over half a year and that really says something because I DNF‘d this at 44%. I was so bored that I just couldn’t bear with it anymore, the first 100(?) pages are the most boring thing I have ever read and it did pick up a bit after that but it just wasn’t remarkable. I though Alina was utterly boring and I feel like all she talked about was how annoying and shot other girls are and that she wasn’t pretty and no one cared about her? Feel like I‘m-not-like-other-girls-Syndrom. I found Mal really annoying, I mean he wasn’t there that much yet but I feel like there wasn’t much to him at all. The only one I was interest in was Genja (? Was that even her name?) my god this whole story was so forgettable. Saying this, I’ll probably try to watch the Netflix show when it comes out because I’m somewhat interested in what’s gonna happen but I just couldn’t read it anymore and it makes me really sad.

Working as a cartographer, Alina and a tracker for Mal, they are needed to join an entourage with other Grishas to gather more information across the West Ravka. But what would happen when a stick and weakly girl discover more of her potential during that journey ? I'm gonna be honest that I have a huge expectation before reading this one and congrats to me, this is my first book from Leigh Bardugo. But I'm sorely a lil bit disappointed and underwhelmed while reading this one. 80% of the plot was quite boring to me. Most of the time when Alina was at the Grisha camp, I was dreading reading her routine and did not expect that there wasn't a lot of action beside her discovering her own powers and a secret rendezvous with Darkling. Luckily, towards the end of the chapters, I found myself enjoying the book as the plot is starting to get more interesting with the tension between the main characters. As for character, just like usual, I'm more intrigued with Darkling and need to know more about his mysterious background. And colour me surprise, I did enjoy the connection between Alina and Mal although most of the people rooting for her and Darkling instead for the Netflix adaptation series. From it, I can truly feel pure chemistry love and understanding from them and loving the tropes of childhood friend to lovers ☺️ But still, I'm intrigued to buy the second book and see the next journey of Alina Starkov unfolded. And I can't wait to read about Darkling next appearance since she left him quite hanging there during the first book

Okay I gotta admit, I was not convinced at the beginning, but the last 150 pages changed my 3 stars to 4 stars. Alina is an okay character, Genya is definitely my favorite but I am also really excited to see more of Zoya since I love her in the show. I really am excited to finish the triology though since I can’t wait for six of crows. Definitely will read more this summer and hope for my tbr this summer to be at least mostly done

Characters: 1 Plot & Worldbuilding: 1 Writing: 1 Read again: 0 Overall feeling: 1 I enjoyed this book very much, especially the part in the Little Palace where Alina learnt to use her powers. The worldbuilding is great and you can witness how much time was spend on name, culture and language research. I loved it! Then the whole concept of the Grisha: the power itself, how they are divided and the amplifiers. I had to google a little about the different types if Grisha because I had a feeling they weren‘t explained enough, but overall the concept was cool. And since I‘m a sucker for elemental powers anyway, it caught me without further difficulties. Alina is an interesting character, with a heartwarming backstory. The idea if how her power was hiding all those years and how it affected her health is a great new way I haven‘t read before. Usually the heroine just gets her power out of nowhere without a further or unrealistic explanation. This is definitely not the case here! I had my troubles liking Mal in the beginning, but grew to care for him in the last part of the book. Before reading this, I was sure that friends to lovers was not my type of romance, but now I‘m not sure anymore haha. About Genya … I get her perspective and understand why she choose her sides. It still hurt and I‘m still disappointed. She was my favorite character apart from Alina. Lastly, the Darkling. I had no special opinion of him at first, he was just the overpowered guy who, naturally, is very good-looking. I liked his character‘s plottwist just as with Baghra. I was shellshocked when he kissed Alina at the half of the book, now after reading everything I actually believe that he desires her (idk if it‘s love, maybe just because they share a power) and that it‘s no trick to manipulate her. She didn‘t fall for it anyways lol. What really interests me is his real name, maybe we‘ll get to know it in one of the following books. To be honest, I also understand his motives. As I understand why most of the Grisha stayed at his side when he showed his true nature. They are the heroes of their kingdom but most dislike distrust them and maybe are jealous on top. I would be sick of saving that King‘s ass too. In conclusion, the book was thrilling and I enjoyed reading it. Still, I probably wouldn‘t read it again. Not because of the quality, just reading it once was enough to grasp everything.

I love the universe that Bardugo has created and I would have loved to read more about it. With fantasy series, the first book is usually so great because you are introduced to the world and learn so much new stuff, myths, old stories, characters etc. I think a bit of potential was wasted here. I liked Alina's appearance in the series much better than in the book. In particular, I find her relationship with Mal more interesting in the series. Nevertheless, the journey that the main characters embark on is still fascinating and engaging. In this book, I was particularly excited about the fantasy part.

I have to be honest here, I did not like Alina as a character, simply because for me, she didn't portray the strong female I wish she were. I know and understand how hard it was and is for her, but she has no self esteem or pride even though she is so strong and could do so much. I liked Genya and Zoya more on the field of being strong female characters. I like the world and the geneeral story, I just woul've wished for a little more world building and history maybe (like what is a sun warrior, where do/did they come from, how many were there before etc.) All in all, a good/ ok book, just not 100% my thing. Still liked the writing style though!

I'm kind of speechless? I don't really know what to say but ... I absolutely LOVED this book! I had no idea what to expect when I picked it up, never really knew what it is about and why everyone seemed so obsessed with it. Now I do. Leigh Bardugo created such a fascinating world, mysterious creatures, fascinating and totally lovable characters and EMOTIONS. The book makes you feel something and I just love it when a book and an author can do this to you! "The thought filled me with grief, grief for the dreams we'd shared, for the love I'd felt, for the hopeful girl I would never be again." Alina Starkov is an amazing girl! She's down-to-earth, very likeable and relatable! I liked her personality a lot, her bravery and even that she always tried to fit in somewhere. Because that's what most of us want too. To be around people like yourself, people who understand you and won't judge you. That made me like her even more! She's also pretty badass and caring! Mal is ... well, Mal. I liked him from the beginning although I wasn't sure about his relationship with Alina. I just didn't like it at first. But after everything they've been through and all that happened ... I kind of ship them, yes. He's protective, strong and brave but also lovely and funny and a really, really good friend. Who wouldn't want someone like him by your side? I totally understand why Alina fell for him! "The problem with wanting," he whispered, his mouth trailing along my jaw until it hovered over my lips, "is that it makes us weak." And yet my heart beats for The Darkling. Now I don't really know why ... maybe I have a thing for "bad boys" and mostly I blame Aaron Warner for it but yes, I LOVED The Darkling! Now at the end of the book I'm torn. Mixed feelings. I shouldn't like him but yet I do, I can't shake it, ugh. I want to find out more about The Fold and his powers and about HIM, his background and his life before everything happened. He's just so fascinating ... *sigh* The plot was ... short? I feel like I could tell you about the whole book in a few sentences but that's okay. I loved the whole concept of it and since it's something new to me, something unique that I haven't really read before, I don't mind it. The ending was quite a cliffhanger and makes me want to read the second book immediately (which I'm DEFINITELY gonna do!), so I can find out what happens next. The book isn't bad but you can really see that it was before Six of Crow's skill level. In general, I can't help but comparing it to Six of Crows. The characters are nowhere near as nuanced as the Dregs and where I could feel Inej's sadness, Kaz' trauma and Jesper's guilt, I had a much harder time really relating to Alina or even caring about Mal. I didn't hate them as much as I thought I would after listening to booktubers' rants about them but they also weren't that great. I loved Genya though. A part of me wished I would have read this before Six of Crows. Not because of the added context but because I think I could have appreciated this more if I didn't know what Leigh can already do.

Ich habe seit 2020 kein Fantasy Buch mehr gelesen und dachte mir jetzt wo Staffel 2 von der Netflix Serie endlich da ist, muss ich mal die Reihe lesen. Und ehrlich gesagt weiß ich jetzt gar nicht, was ich sagen soll. Bin ich in der Zeit zu alt für YA Fantasy geworden? Ist es einfach wirklich nicht so weltbewegend? Fand ich es nicht so berauschend, da ich 2021 die erste Staffel Shadow and Bone auf Netflix geguckt hab und dadurch den Plott schon kenne, obwohl ich komplett vergessen hab, um was es ging. Ich weiß es noch nicht. Dafür muss ich vorher Band 2 & 3 lesen und natürlich die Spin-Off Reihe Six of Crows, was ich damals sehr geliebt habe. Also "Kurzreview" zum Buch, weil ich sonst wieder vergesse, was ich daran nicht so mochte: Die erzählte Zeit war einfach gefühlt ein Zeitraffer. Alles passiert im Schnelldurchlauf, was jetzt vielleicht nicht unbedingt negativ sein muss, aber irgendwie hat mir dadurch die Tiefe von den verschiedenen Charakteren bzw. die Zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen von Alina zu allen anderen gefehlt. Die existiert dann halt einfach, weil "ja die haben da ne süße Szene, da nen kleinen Talk und jetzt assume einfach die sehen sich jeden Tag und BOOM du verstehst, die sind halt jetzt einfach Besties". Aber vielleicht bin ich da auch einfach nur picky, weil ich One Piece geschaut habe. Die Story an sich ist halt auch nur so ja ok "Gut" gegen "Böse" ah und bisschen Love Triangle (Spoiler ahead) wo dich der komplett fremde Mann einfach betrayed wer hätte das gedacht ach ja Alina hättest du mal auf den gruseligen Priester gehört hast du ja Recht (Spoiler Ende). Ist halt basic und hat jetzt nicht irgendwie ne ultra heftige Tiefe. Basic Court Drama, basic Charaktere, basic overall Story, aber hey wenigstens gibt es ein cooles Magiesys- wie das wird gar nicht so heftig erklärt? Die existieren einfach nur? Obwohl sie das auch komplett neu lernt? Der Leser lernt gefühlt fast nichts mit mit ihr? Es würde oft keinen Unterschied machen, ob die normale Personen wären oder Grisha? Ja, leider. Und über das "Grisha werden nicht krank, aber 100 Seiten später versuche ich Zeit zu schinden und sage, dass du krank bist" will ich gar nicht erst reden. Rip an der Stelle. Fand es aber trotzdem angenehm zu lesen, auch wenn ich mich jetzt nicht mega in die Welt oder die Protagonistin hineinversetzt gefühlt habe. Kann man mal machen, wenn man nach nem No-Brainer YA Fantasy Buch sucht. Mal gucken, wie die Fortsetzungen so sind. Bin ich zu alt für YA oder sind die Bücher einfach nicht so gut? I devoured the book. Even when I have watched the show and because the elements of the show are very close to the book (so that I basically knew what was going to happen). But it was soo easy to read, to get drown into this world and Alina's story. Can't wait for book 2 and 3 and what is going to happen next. And I love Genya, ahh ♥ Extra love for her.

Reread 2021:Oh, ich dachte das wäre mein erster Reread. Na ja, dann lese ich dieses Buch also alle zwei Jahre xD Reread 2019: Ein wunderschöner Reread. Das ist eines dieser Bücher, bei denen man sich fühlt wie nach Hause kommen, wenn man es erneut liest. Ravka und vor allem die sehr schnelle Geschichte, wie Alina ihre Fähigkeiten als Grischa entdeckt, lernt und sich dem Darkling annähert und schließlich erkennt, dass sie als unscheinbares Waisenkind einfach zu sehr wollte, plötzlich im Mittelpunkt zu stehen und die Welt zu retten, so dass sie einige Warnzeichen übersehen hat und leider alles nicht so toll ist, wie gehofft. WUN-DER-SCHÖN! Die Geschichte von ihr und dem Darkling ist zudem herzzerbrechend, wenn man die gesamte Reihe einmal kennt und dann wieder von vorn liest. Für Alina und Mal finde ich, dass man unbedingt den Brief lesen sollte, der in meiner Ausgabe im Bonusmaterial vorhanden ist. Ohne wirkt Mal recht blass bzw. sein Wandel etwas unglaubwürdig. "Shadow and Bone" habe ich hauptsächlich gelesen, weil so viele Leute bei Twitter darüber geredet haben - und wenn viele Leute darüber reden, muss man sich ja zumindest mal ein Bild machen, also bestellt und gewartet. Als das Buch ankam, war ich zuerst einmal enttäuscht von der geringen Seitenanzahl (über die ich mich vorher gar nicht informiert hatte). Gut, ein Auftakt für eine Trilogie, trotzdem blieb es mein größtes Manko. Ich habe fast in einem Rutsch durchgelesen, es war unterhaltsam, es war spannend, es war gut geschrieben und lud dazu ein, mit dem Buch noch weiter sitzen zu bleiben, auch wenn beide Beine längst eingeschlafen waren. Danach hätte ich sofort mit Band 2 weitermachen können, oder verzweifelt weiterblättern, ob es noch mehr Bonusmaterial gibt ... aber leider sind diese knapp über 300 Seiten tatsächlich alles. Schade. Ich werde definitiv die übrigen Bände lesen, doch für mich hätte man aus der Geschichte und der Welt noch mehr machen können, gerade die Charaktere hätten es sicher gebrauchen können. Insgesamt erinnert mich "Shadow and Bone" sehr an den Anfang der Gilde der schwarzen Magier, Alina als Sonea, Mal als Cery und der Darkling als Akkarin, nur dass es hier den Twist gibt, dass der Darkling nach ein paar Worten von einer Lehrerin, die erst immer so mysteriös war und sich dann als seine Mutter entpuppt - also ich hab das nicht kommen sehen, gab es da Hinweise? - wirklich und leibhaftig böse ist, wir das hinnehmen müssen und sich Alina ganz Mal zuwendet, der natürlich mit ein bisschen Abwesenheit erkennt, dass sie die Eine ist. Dass sie dank diverser Umstände nun endlich schön und weiblich ist, schadet natürlich auch nicht. Bei der Ausbildung gab es leider einiges, das sehr plump abgehandelt wurde. Nebencharaktere bleiben bei wenigen Eigenschaften und Auftritten und erfüllen keinen richtigen Zweck als dass Alina eben nicht allein da sein kann. Wirklich üben muss sie auch nicht, es braucht nur die Erkenntnis, warum sie ihre Fähigkeit so lange verborgen hat, um diese Barriere zu durchbrechen ... Je länger ich an diesem Review schreibe, desto größer wird der Wunsch, doch nur 3 Sterne zu vergeben, wenn ich über all das nachdenke, was eben nicht da ist. Allerdings wäre es nicht fair, weil ich beim Lesen eine tolle Zeit hatte, mit Alina mit gefiebert habe und fleißig mein Fähnchen für den Darkling geschwenkt habe. Auch am Worldbuilding gibt es nichts zu meckern und ich freue mich schon darauf, mehr von der Welt zu lesen die ja, so wie das Buch endet, definitiv größer werden wird. Auf übers Meer!

I really liked the premise of this book and I have seen A LOT about it on booktok/bookstagram, this is what intrigued me to read it. Such a different take on a magical world, it was great to see the different powers and to discover a very different magic system from what I have yet read. Of course, the main character seems a little plain, maybe not too intriguing at the start, but I am excited to see some development in the next books and how the story will unfold. For me it was an easy, fast paced read and I had fun while progressing through the story.

"I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise. I'd catch myself just walking around to find you, not for any reason, just out of habit, because I'd seen something that I wanted to tell you about or because I wanted to hear your voice. And then I'd realize that you weren't there anymore, and every time, every single time, it was like having the wind knocked out of me." This book had been sitting on my shelf for so long. Despite hearing so much good about it from several people, I just didn't know what to expect, so I stayed away from it. Now I'm glad I finally picked it up and could kick myself for letting it sit there for so long. First of all, the characters are amazing. I think I'm in love with all of them, even the antagonist. He really confused me and I'm still not 100% sure whether to hate him, or love him, or just be a fangirl of his powers. Speaking of which, the powers. The whole magic system was entirely new to me, and as I don't read fantasy regularly, complex magic systems usually confuse me and put me off books. But this one was well thought out, and properly explained through show instead of too much tell. I really liked the idea of the elements playing a big part, but also that everyone can still have their own "thing" apart from that. Going into this book, I also thought I wouldn't enjoy the setting at all (it's set in a fantasy version of Russia, I think), but that was luckily not the case. The setting is merely background noise (except that it's cold, but it could be cold anywhere in the world), and the Russian words might as well be just made-up words from a fantasy realm. I think "Shadow and Bone" was a great start back into fantasy, and it's definitely on the PRO side of the list of whether I will read more fantasy this year or not. 4 out of 5 Stars, because it was really good and interesting, but not mind blowing.

Insgesamt hat es mir sehr gut gefallen, vor allem das letzte Drittel hat beim Lesen sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Leider ging mir die Protagonistin zwischenzeitlich sehr auf die Nerven, da sie in der Mitte des Buches sehr oft erwähnen musste, dass sie nicht die Schönste und auch nicht die Beste ist, was dann einfach nach einigen Seiten ziemlich nervig wurde. Trotzdem gab es ein paar Wendungen, die mich überraschen konnten und allgemein hat mir das Magiesystem in dieser Welt sehr gut gefallen. Ich bin mal gespannt, wie es in Teil 2 weitergeht.

As someone who fell in love with Shadow and Bone thanks to Netflix, this book was a bit boring at times because I knew what was coming. The biggest parts and plots of the story were already present in my brain so none was really a big surprise. It was very beautiful tho. There are many things I don’t understand yet about the entire story and the netflix show but I’m very excited to read the next part. Would definitely recommend.

Die Geschichte an sich ist nicht so spektakulär, aber Leigh Bardugos Schreibstil und ihre detailreiche, ausgeklügelte Welt trösten über einige Längen und Schwächen hinweg. Am Anfang kam ich ein bisschen schwer rein und es hat eine Weile gedauert, aber das Buch hat sich wirklich klasse entwickelt. Es hat mich gefesselt und mitgerissen- vielleicht auch ein bisschen auseinander gerissen… Für jeden Buchliebhaber, der gerne in die Irre geführt wird, auf Plot-Twists steht und gerne ein bisschen Magie dabeihat, auf jeden Fall einen Blick wert.

Nachdem ich die Serie bei Netflix geschaut hatte, war für mich klar: die Bücher muss ich lesen! Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. So ein wundervoller Schreibstil, ich konnte kaum aufhören weiter zu lesen. Ich konnte mich so gut mit Alina identifizieren und ihre Verlangen absolut nachempfinden. Der Dunkle hatte mich von Anfang an in seinen Bann gezogen und nicht mehr los gelassen. Ich habe geweint, gelacht, gehofft und gestaunt. Der zweite Teil steht schon bereit! ☺️

Ich hatte bisher schon so viel über diese Reihe gehört. Doch bisher hatte ich die Bücher nie gelesen. Als ich schließlich den Netflix Trailer der Verfilmung gesehen hatte war es um mich geschehen. Ich musste dieses Buch einfach lesen. Der Einstieg ins Buch fiel mir sehr leicht denn der Schreibstil der Autorin ist locker und sehr flüssig. Gleichzeitig schreibt sie bildhaft und einnehmend. Es gelang ihr mühelos mich in den Bann der Story zu ziehen. Bereits nach wenigen Seiten war ich vollends in der Story versunken. Ich blendete alles andere um mich herum aus denn für mich zählte nur noch dieses Buch. Alina und auch Mal habe ich quasi sofort in mein Herz geschlossen. Die beiden verbindet eine enge Freundschaft und sie haben schon einiges miteinander erlebt. Man merkte aber das Alina eigentlich immer in Mals Schatten stand. Allerdings trübt daß ihr Freundschaft nicht, Alina möchte ungern im Mittelpunkt stehen. Ich habe die beiden sehr schnell in mein Herz geschlossen. Beide wirkten auf mich authentisch und greifbar. Tja, und dann haben wir hier noch den Dunklen. Ich habe absolut keine Ahnung wie ich ihn einschätzen kann. Er wirkt auf mich sehr geheimnisvoll und eiskalt. Die Atmosphäre im Buch war düster und teilweise beklemmend. Zudem war die Handlung unglaublich spannend. Zwar gibt's im Buch auch eine "Lovestory" aber diese steht kaum im Vordergrund und das war wirklich erfrischend. Schon bald überschlugen sich die Ereignisse und ich hatte keine Ahnung wie das Ganze ausgehen würde. Ich muss sagen ich fühlte mich echt hilflos. Es war so nervenaufreibend und spannend. Das Ende kam irgendwie viel zu schnell, denn ich wollte nicht dass es endet. Ich hätte gerne noch weiter gelesen. An sich passt das Ende perfekt zum Buch. Es gab auch keinen allzu großen Cliffhänger. Dennoch bin ich unglaublich gespannt wie es weiter gehen wird. Für mich ist dieses Buch definitiv ein Highlight und ich bin sehr gespannt wo die Reise noch hingehen wird. Klare Lese und Kaufempfehlung. Fazit: Mit "Goldene Flammen" gelingt Leigh Bardugo ein packender und spannender Reihenauftakt der mich absolut begeistert hat. Noch immer bin ich vollkommen geflasht! Bitte mehr davon.

Honestly? I did enjoy it but it wasn‘t the Next Harry Potter at all for ne like it said on the back. I kinda hate Alina and Mal, they’re so naive. I liked the setting in a slavic environment and the idea of Grisha but everything went by too fast and there was no real character development. I liked the series much more because I listened to the crow books before and really liked them. So yeah it’s not bad and I will read the whole trilogy but the first one wasn’t really my style.

This put me into a huge reading slump since it was rather boring. Both love interests were horrible. The chosen one trope has to be executed well in order to be good but this was just torture since Alina is really clueless all the time. The Darkling is a toon like villain with no depth even though the plot is centered around him. At least I can read Six of Crows now.

Nach vielen anderen Genres dieses Jahr hatte ich mal wieder richtig Lust auf Fantasy. Diese Reihe bot sich da an, da ich mittelfristig der Serie auf Netflix eine Chance geben will - und tatsächlich wurde ich nicht enttäuscht. Dieses erste Buch aus der Reihe entpuppte sich als solide Coming of Age Geschichte, in der die Welt der beiden Fantasyreihen dieser Autorin eingeführt wird. Die Welt enthält einige interessante Elemente, wie zum Beispiel die Ödsee und das Magiesystem, allerdings finde ich die Art, wie russische Elemente eingebaut sind, eher schwach. Da hätte ich mir mehr erhofft. Auch einige der Figuren bleiben mir ein wenig zu blass und klischeebehaftet. In Summe habe ich mich trotzdem gut unterhalten gefühlt, Band 2 liegt schon bereit und die Krähensaga werde ich auch eine Chance geben.

Nachdem ich zuerst “Six of Crows” und “Crooked Kingdom” verschlungen und geliebt habe, habe ich nun endlich auch die Grisha-Trilogie angefangen. Ich habe versucht meine Erwartungen herunterzuschrauben, weil “Shadow and Bone” das Debüt von Leigh Bardugo ist. ⚠️[CN: Fettfeindlichkeit, Gewalt, Genozid, Missbrauch, Mobbing, Mord, Suizidalität, Tod, Tod/Tötung von Tieren, Versuchte Vergewaltigung, Waise] Das Grishaverse ist einfach eine so coole Welt mit all den unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten der Grishas! Allerdings muss ich zugeben, dass mein Vorwissen durch die Krähen dieser Begeisterung geholfen hat. Denn die erste Hälfte des Buchs war für mich ein Vor-sich-hin-Plätschern. Besonders Alina hat mich genervt, weil ständig betont wird, wie hässlich sie doch sei und sie war teilweise regelrecht selbstsüchtig. Es ist schade, dass es so viele Tropes gab und ich konnte über die vielen Klischees einfach nicht hinwegsehen. Alina: hässliches Entlein zum schönen Schwan Mal: Klischee-Flirt, ein bisschen zu besitzergreifend Darkling: toxischer bad boy, NICHT sexy! Zoya: mean girl Ok, das hört sich ziemlich negativ an. Deshalb nun Positives! Genya! Ich liebe Genya so sehr und hasse den Darkling umso mehr, was er ihr angetan hat. Ich wünschte, es hätte mehr Szenen mit Genya gegeben, weil sie einfach so wundervoll und stark ist! Dann noch Baghra :D [SPOILER] Ich finde sie einfach klasse und die Tatsache, dass sie die Mutter vom Darkling ist, finde ich irgendwie lustig
