Das Buch handelt davon, dass Junior sein Leben ändern und die Schule wechseln möchte. Seine neue Schule ist voller erfolgreicher weißer Kinder. Dort sucht er nach mehr Hoffnung für sein Leben, aber seinem besten Freund Rowdy gefällt die Tatsache nicht, dass Junior die Schule gewechselt hat.

Wir haben dieses Buch in der Schule im Englischunterricht gelesen, um viel mehr über die Spokane-Indians zu erfahren. Man lernt sehr viel darüber, wie die Menschen auf den Reservations leben und wie sie mit den Vorurteilen aber auch mit Rassismus gegen sie umgehen. Außerdem finde ich toll, dass man einen Einblick in die verschiedenen Traditionen bekommt, aber auch wie sie mit den Problemen auf den Reservations umgehen. Allem in allem ist es ein sehr lehrreiches Buch und man kann eine schöne Geschichte über die Entwicklung von Junior lesen, wie er nicht einmal am Anfang von den anderen auf der Reservation akzeptiert wird bis ihn am Ende sogar die Menschen außerhalb der Reservation akzeptieren✨

Another one of those American youth fiction novels that have been a hype a couple of years ago. I actually have no idea how I got here, reading this kind of literature so often. One might say that I should know better by now but for some reason I keep coming back, trying to figure out what it is that thousands of people fall in love with. In this case, I assume it's the fact that the True Diary examines a whole lot (too many?) important topics like death, racism, alcoholism etc. while at the same time being an easy and even funny read. This apparently makes it a hell of a read in English lessons in high schools all over America. To me it was interesting to learn about the Native American community, the life in reservations and the problems that come with it. As the novel is written for kids & juveniles, the information is not abundant - but it’s enough to get a peak behind the curtain. I did not click with the writing style though and was annoyed by Junior too many times. Still, it was a quick and easy read and I have even written down one quote that’s stuck with me: “The quality in a man’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavour.” - Vince Lombardi, US-Football Coach

The Story in itself is actually good but the way it is done idk I don‘t really like it... The main character is just really weird like really really weird! He got a boner when his 50 year old teacher hugged him and told him that his sister died like wtf?!! And he was proud that the teacher propably noticed it like what the actuall fuck is wrong with him like no he just ruins the story I am sorry and his bestfriend omg he is the worst and they are still friends even though his friend blamed him for the death of his sister like what the hell?!

🏀🌲🏀 The book "The absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian" by Sherman Alexie is about the fourteen-year-old, indian Boy called Arnold, who was born with too much water on the Brain. This and his poverty makes his life difficult, when he decides to leave his home, the reservation, to find hope. That is why his best friend there and he started an argument, but he got new friends at his new school. The whole story of the book is about Arnold and based on his feelings, therefore I think it is important the story was written in the first person. From this it can be concluded, the climax of the story is in my eyes the basketball game, because he was shy and avoids conflicts before it, but was later more confident. I like that the story begins at the beginning of his story and the following relentless reality of an indian life, together with the authentic writing of Sherman Alexie, which is supported by cartoons. All of this is probably related to the fact, the book is an autobiography story of the author himself. But I am afraid there are negative points too. First, the things, happening to Arnold were made really big and then were hardly ever mentioned again. That made me feel, the whole story is just a stringing together of problems, which seem contrived. Furthermore, the story hasn't surprised me at all, after the third time another problem appears as soon as the one before got solved. But every of them was dramatized extremely, so I could not take the book as serious as needed, even though the points like alcoholism are all very important. On top of that, the style of writing was too rough and simple for me, which fits just partly to the character of Arnold, because he reads a lot, whereby you get a bigger Vocabulary. Through all of the above I couldn't identify and feel with the main character, what makes the book much worse. All in all, it was suspenseful to learn about the way of living in a reservation in brutal reality, but except of this the big problems there, were wrapped in a story too weak and especially too short for them. So, the group I would recommend this book to is very small. In my eyes the book were sadly just one and a half stars of five. 🏀🌲🏀

Junior ist 14, wurde mit einem Hydrocephalus geboren, ist dünn, trägt Brille und stottert, daher hat er es im Spokane-Reservat mit seinen rauen Umgangsformen ohnehin schon nicht leicht. Glücklicherweise gibt es seinen besten Freund Rowdy, der ihm immer beisteht und ansonsten seinem Namen alle Ehre macht. Doch als ein Lehrer Junior davon überzeugt, dass er auf eine Schule außerhalb des Reservats gehen soll, ja muss, ist Junior erst recht der Buhmann und selbst Rowdy wendet sich von ihm ab. Sherman Alexies semibiografischer Jugendroman ist gleichzeitig saukomisch und tieftraurig. Junior zeichnet Comics, dementsprechend ist sein Tagebuch mit witzigen Zeichnungen mit einer guten Portion Selbstironie ausgestattet, die im Buch durch Illustrationen von Ellen Forney wiedergegeben werden. Auch liegt es ihm fern, über die Mobbing-Attacken durch andere Reservat-Bewohner zu jammern, er ist die Auge-um-Auge-Mentalität im Reservat gewohnt. Wie krass das Leben im Reservat die Chancen der Menschen verschlechtert, wird Junior so richtig bewusst, als er in die privilegierte "weiße" Schule im benachbarten Reardan wechselt. Wie Leseratte Junior feststellt: "I was the only kid, white or Indian, who knew that Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities. And let me tell you, we Indians were the worst of times and those Reardan kids were the best of times." (Seite 50) Der Tod ist alltäglich im Reservat und ist sehr oft mit Alkohol verbunden, die Indianer saufen sich förmlich zu Tode oder sterben bei Unfällen im Zusammenhang mit Alkohol. Auch Junior verzeichnet im Laufe des Buches mehrere Verluste, die den Leser fassungslos zurücklassen: "But I was crying for my tribe, too. I was crying because I knew five or ten or fifteen more Spokanes would die during the next year, and that most of them would die because of booze. I cried because so many of my fellow tribal members were slowly killing themselves and I wanted them to live." (Seite 216) Die Hoffnungslosigkeit der Reservatsbewohner ist herzzereißend und greifbar, die Indianer haben sich aufgegeben, mit ihrer Situation abgefunden. Mit der offenen Darstellung der Zustände im Reservat, des Alkoholismus und der Gewalt und der Erwähnung von Masturbation haben manche amerikanische Schülereltern wohl ein Problem, das Buch wurde an zahlreichen Schulen in den USA verboten. Dabei halte ich es für gerade besonders gut geeignet für Schüler - wie soll man Jugendliche zu verantwortungsvollen, handlungsbereiten Erwachsenen erziehen, wenn sie nichts über die Missstände und Ungerechtigkeiten in ihrem Land erfahren? The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian ist ein wichtiges Buch mit viel Witz und Charme, das ich unbedingt weiterempfehlen möchte.
