I had to listen to the audiobook because the book was unreadable. The language is confusing and inaccessible. The story itself wasn’t particularly interesting - but i have to say i’m not a huge fan of coming-of-age stories anyway. We just follow Johnny through her life: Birth to around 27 years old. However, I have never before seen or heard of a german book about a bisexual non-binary? person? It makes me sad how little the summaries and reviews of this book talk about Johnnys journey with gender, because it’s fascinating to see and to me much more a main topic than her bisexuality. I also never saw anything about her relationship to her Brother, which is such a central relationship to an otherwise lonely and lost person.Although the language is hard to read, it also was quite clever. I enjoyed passages and the way the meaning was packaged into metaphors, word plays and references in order to convey feelings a lot more clearly than the german language usually tends to allow. And showing how much Johnny forces herself not to face things head on. To read this book you have to read between the lines almost the entire time.
