We're off to read the Wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The classic film of this book has worked it's way so intrinsically into our popular culture that it's officially difficult to read this as a stand-alone book. A delightful little fairy tale in the true tradition of the old fairy tales in that it is much more violent and gruesome in places than people care to remember. One scene in particular springs to mind that involves the death of no less than 80 animals at the hands of our heroes. I loved this from start to finish, just the right combination of magic and realism with a nice dash of hidden meaning behind the text to make it a true classic. Well worth a try, even if, like me, you end up humming all the songs as you read.

Ich liebe den Film und ich liebe fantastische Geschichten. Im Zuge des neu erschienenen „Wicked“ Films und weil es das 125 jährige Jubiläum des Buches ist, dachte ich mir beginne ich das Jahr mit diesem modernen Märchen von L. Frank Baum. Die Story kennt wahrscheinlich jeder. Dorothy wird von einem Tornado in das wunderbare Land von Oz getragen und muss nun mit ihren neugewonnenen Freunden den großen Zauberer finden, damit dieser ihre Wünsche erfüllt. Was mir wirklich gut gefallen hat, war das Worldbuilding. Dazu kommen die wunderschönen Zeichnungen von William Wallace Denslow. Wir haben ein besonders schönes Exemplar von dem Buch, in dem wohl schönsten Buchladen den es gibt, der Livaria Lello in Portugal erworben, was das Lesevergnügen nochmal gesteigert hat. Außerdem fand ich die vielen Parabeln sehr raffiniert eingebaut und vor allem für Kinder und Jugendliche sehr lehrreich. Was mich leider etwas gestört hat, war das Repetitive. Das ist aber wahrscheinlich auch ein generelles Problem von Märchen. Das hat mich aber leider oft aus der Erzählung rausgerissen. Ich war auch sehr überrascht, wie brutal das Buch an einigen Stellen ist, vor allem da es ja hauptsächlich für ein jüngeres Publikum geschrieben wurde. Da kamen wahrscheinlich Baum‘s deutsche Wurzeln durch. Insgesamt ein wirklich schönes Buch, dass man sich vor allem jetzt in der dunklen Jahreszeit mal vornehmen kann, um etwas Farbe in den Kopf zu bekommen.

Selbstverständlich ist „The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” ein Klassiker der Kinderliteratur, meiner Meinung nach jedoch ziemlich überbewertet. Dorothy ist eine nette Haupt und Identifikationsfigur, nervt jedoch nach kurzer Zeit, da der Charakter sonst absolut uninteressant ist: Ihr Handeln hat nie negative Konsequenzen, sie hat keine schlechte Eigenschaft und sie macht auch keine wirkliche Entwicklung durch. Da sind Löwe, Vogelscheuche und Blechmann deutlich interessanter, denn sie finden was sie suchen auf ihren Reisen und werden auf dieser Reise durch diese Suche aufgrund ihrer Unvollkommenheit interessant. Die drei Hexen sind in ihrem Auftreten in Ordnung, aber nicht wirklich interessant, besonders dass der Hexe des Westens gerade einmal ein Kapitel gewidmet wurde, fühlt sich falsch an. Positiv hervorzuheben sind jedoch die legendären Bilder, die Frank Baum beim Lesen hervorruft, beispielsweise die Yellow Brick Road oder die Emerald City. „The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” ist keinenfalls so gut wie sein Ruf, dennoch aber ein schönes Kinder-Fantasybuch, wenn auch bei weitem nicht so gut wie J.R.R. Tolkiens „The Hobbit, or There and Back Again”.

I have always loved the movie since it was a part of my childhood but I never got around to reading the book. Recently, I finished listening to the audiobook version of it. The story was very different from the iconic movie and it felt more complete and sensible. Unlike the movie, the story did not feel rushed. That is the case for most book adaptations but each version is beautiful in this case.

Dorothy is brought to the land of Oz by a cyclone...and there she is involved in quite many adventures but gets a lot of support by her unusual friends. They are themselves looking for brains, a heart and courage while they help Dorothy to find a way back home to Kansas... I really liked the world and all the different creatures in it, but the writing style was getting on my nerves... Maybe that's a story that is actually better told via visual media like a movie or an illustrated book because there's a high potential in the wonderful world of Oz - in my opinion that and not the storyline or writing is definitely the higher potential. But I'll have a look what the other books of the series are like.

Though there were sections that don't feature in the public consciousness a much as others (mainly due I suppose to how much they feature in the 1939 classic movie adaptation.) this book was precisely what I was expecting and hoping it would be, wonderfully whimsical with a dash of the macabre. Now I'm more excited than ever to continue through the 13 other books in L Frank Baum's Oz series!
