'Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary.'

"Oh captain, my captain"

I haven't seen the movie this book is based on up to now because I wanted to read the novel beforehand (as always). What I didn't know up to then was that the book came out after the movie was released. Ooopsie. Anyways, here's my review. Personally, I think that Dead Poets Society had a lot of potential because it has loveable characters, a setting I really liked and a story that had a deeper meaning. But ... it might have been the most undetailed book I've read in quite a while. Things happend without being explained and the characters were pretty flat due to the fact that there were no further details on their personality given. It's a 2.5* star rating really. If it would have been more detailed, I would have grown to like this book more than I do now.

Ob Mr. Keating heute als Lehrer besser ins Schulsystem passen würde - I doubt it.

One of the few books where I started to really think about it

This book is not just about some random teenagers who went to a boarding school and like poetry in the late 50s. It’s about people who started to experience the beauty of literature and especially poems. It’s also about living your live and seeing things from different points of view. Of course the ending was super sad either the death of Neil and that mr Keating needed to go But it teach me a great lesson and I would recommend it to everyone.

so i read the book in one sitting and after that i watched the movie (never watched it before) and i loved both. i laughed, i cried, i loved it. BUT… i have to say that i didn’t understand some things. (spoilers from here) i did not get why in the book the scene in which knox overstreet is on chris' party was so sexual? in the movie he just kisses her on the forehead (which is still weird and not okay) but in the book he nearly touches her breasts without consent. also the scene in which charlie brings the two girls into the cave was so oversexualised for no reason. otherwise i have to say that i wished that some dialogue between todd/neil and their parents from the book would have been in the movie

I love this book!!! The vibe of the book is just as good as in the movie. Since the book only has about 160 pages, it only contains important parts of the story which never make it seem boring. It’s amazingly writing and very poetic (obviously) what makes me love it even more since I’m a huge fan of poetry. The scenes are very true to the movie, and the book even holds more scenes than the movie! Neil’s death is even more sudden in the book, which totally broke my heart, but everything just went on so fast and suddenly, the book was already over. The ending is one of my favorite parts of the book. You can feel the power the dead poets society holds over Mr Nolan to honor Mr Keating and their special bond. A masterpiece in and out. Definitely worths reading. I’d call it the perfect autumn read!!

3,5/5 Sternen.

*2.5 Stars. This was such a hard one to rate for me. The movie itself is one of my all time favorites, I just love love love it. This book, however, lacked all of the atmosphere, the charm and emotions of the film. It simply felt like somebody was just retelling the plot of Dead Poets Society. It failed to capture the essence of the movie and to be honest, in the novel I just didn't care for any of the characters, which made me really sad. DPS is a movie that heavily relies on the character constellation and each person's uniqueness, whereas the book didn't even try to sketch the basics of the boys' traits. I really had hoped the novel would add depth or more information or really anything to what we have seen in the movie, but I got disappointed. To point out one positive thing is that I could really see this working as teaching material, in combination with the movie, for learners of the English language. All in all, I just can't give this novel more than the above-mentioned 2.5 stars. If you have the choice between spending your time reading the book or rewatching the movie, I personally would recommend you to cuddle up, get a big cup of tea and watch the film.

I really enjoyed this book. In total it takes not more than 2 hours to finish it. All in all I love the psychological aspect in it and the technics their Teaches uses to help them find themselves and form their own mind and personality. Neil is my alltime fav comfortcharacter and I think we all cried because of him and his tragic ending...
