There are some really great poems in “A Portable Paradise“. Each of the five sections contains some poems that I keep coming back to. Others did not leave an impression but I would argue that this is quite normal for a collection of poems. The first section deals with the Grenfell Tower disaster. The poem “The Missing“ is how I came to know about Robinson. I listened to the latest album from The Bug, which is titled “Fire“ and the last song - “The Missing” - is a spoken word piece in which Robinson reads the poem, accompanied only by some dark, brooding droning sounds. An eerie ending to a really great album. The poems in this collection deal with racism, the Windrush generation, politics, pain, remembrance There are some poetic reactions to pieces of art and many poems in the last section deal with Robinson’s prematurely born son. My only complaint about this book would be that the different sections are not connected, so it seems that the book has been “thrown together” rather than carefully planned.
