Excellent mystery and who-is-who!
One house in Chelsea, two families, three bodies on the ground floor – and a baby, all alone in the house, yet somehow well cared for. Years later that very same baby, now grown up and heir to the house, sets out to uncover the truth about what really happened back then… I’ve read quite a few books by Lisa Jewell, and this one definitely had one of the creepiest atmospheres. It’s far from horror, but still not for the faint-hearted – somewhere between a family tragedy and a murder mystery. Also, this book is definitely for people who enjoy complex narrative structures. At the beginning, the three storylines were quite confusing, and it took me a while to rumble the characters and how the timelines and plots were connected. A lot of the twists were fairly predictable for me, though the ending was wrapped up in a really fascinating way. The story feels pretty complete to me, but I’m obviously still curious to see where the second book goes!
