What a weird and sudden ending.
Unfassbar gutes Buch
This book was not completely it for me. I feel like I never fully got into the story for a few reasons: First, the story is divided into a “Before” & “After” (or rather present day) perspective. The constant switching made it a bit difficult to engage with the actions and characters. Besides, I didn’t like the ‘wandering around’-trope (and I am not sure whether this was simply due to personal preferences or wasn’t well-written?). And sometimes it felt like nothing was happening, the story just went on without any real twists. And then, there was the ending. It is being explicitly written, that there is no need to find the resolution behind the mysteries that build the plot of the story. I think that is way too simple (like writing a book about a murder mystery without revealing the murderer) and doesn’t serve as satisfying conclusion. On the other hand though, I liked the happy ending, which might have been a bit too optimistic, but I found it lovely. I also found it oddly exhausting to read this book. This might have been mainly due to the fact that this dystopian world is closely connected with a global pandemic and its consequences. In the face of our time, this might have just been an unfortunately coincidental timing (at least I don't have much desire to read books that make me think about my own experiences with COVID-19). All in all, this was no page-turner, but also not a book that I didn’t want to keep on reading. It was a nice little story, but, for me personal, not more than average-good. Nevertheless, I am going to give this series another chance by reading another Christina Henry book. I believe this was one of her weaker books and she can do better than this.
Meh.
I personally enjoyed the concept, but I do have many things that I didn't like. The MC was great, I really liked her, the concept was very fun too, it had so much potential which I personally thought was lost throughout the book. What was the parasite? What about the Cough? I didn't like the writing style, and thought some of the pacing was either too slow or too fast. While I get that Sam and Riley were supposed to be some kind of parallel to Adam and Red, I didn't really find and reason for them to exist, or Red so readily accepting them even though it did bring more danger with it. Sure, she is kind hearted, but she didn't really consider it much, which felt like of OOC. Also, why is she named Red? Only because of her hoodie? That doesn't really make much sense, but it didn't bother me all that much. Enjoyable storyline, but some of the things really bothered me.
"Do you think I don't know what kind of men this world has wrought?" Red said. "Every woman knows. And those men existed before everything fell apart." This is the first book I read by Christina Henry and I was surprised (but certainly not appalled) by how violent and gory it is. The Girl in Red centers around Red who, after the world around her has turned apocalyptic due to a virus that has decimated the human population, makes her way through the woods to get to her grandmother. Red is a great protagonist. She's half-black, uses a leg prosthesis and is a kick-ass young woman not afraid to defend herself. This is such a clever retelling of Red Riding Hood. I foolishly assumed it would be Fantasy, but I loved how eerily realistic it felt. Books like this always make me realise how I would be (or will be, *nervous laughter*) if stuff like this happened in real life (when it will happen). I should really step up my game concerning self-defense and survival skills.
Reading a virus apocalypse story in 2020 hits different.
