In meinen Augen besteht die Stärke von "If we were villains" in der Erzählperspektive. Dadurch, dass wir alles durch Oliver erzählt bekommen, werden wir wohl nie erfahren, was die hundertprozentige Wahrheit ist und das ist etwas, das mich wohl nachhaltig beschäftigen wird. Für mich war die Entscheidung der Charaktere, die die Handlung lostritt, schwer nachvollziehbar. Wobei ich mir aber immer wieder ihr Alter vor Augen halten musste. Wahrscheinlich liegt das auch in ihrer Art begraben. Sie denken, sie wissen alles, dabei sind sie noch nicht einmal 20 und haben kaum etwas gesehen. Durch Olivers manchmal krude Ansicht kommen mir gerade die weiblichen Charaktere wie Stereotypen vor. Was sich in seinem Verhalten begründet und auch in der Auflösung am Ende. Als Non Theaterkid muss man sich an die vielen Zitate gewöhnen. Ich bezweifle nicht, dass es besonders in den USA genauso ablaufen könnte, aber die Klischees über die Kunststudent*innen sind schon sehr plakativ. Am Ende muss ich sagen, dass die künstlerischen Aspekte des Buches mich wirklich neugierig darauf macht, was die Autorenperson noch so verfasst hat. If we were villains konnte mich emotional aber nicht hundertprozentig abholen. Der Hörbuchsprecher hat eine sehr angenehme Stimme und bringt die Emotionen toll rüber. Allerdings würde ich mir wünschen, dass man sich bei unterschiedlichen Geschlechtern mehr Mühe gibt. Es gibt viele, als weiblich oder männlich wahrgenommene Eigenschaften von Stimmen, die man nutzen könnte, abgesehen von der Tonhöhe.

Der Klappentext hörte sich richtig spannend an, aber irgendwie war es dann doch nicht das Richtige für mich. Es ist eine tolle Handlung und auch das versteckte Thema Verschwinden zwischen Illusion und Realität ist sehr gut umgesetzt. Da ich mit Theater und Shakespeare überhaupt nichts anfangen kann, erkannte ich die Szenen nicht und auch die Redewendungen sagten mir nichts. Da ich aber ein absoluter Krimifan bin, wollte ich die Auflösung des Falls wissen und blieb bis zum Ende dran. Es gab ein krasses Ende. Absolute Empfehlung für Shakespeare Fans!

wirklich so so gut. mega spannend, wollte immer wissen wie es weiter geht, es war toll. aber auch so unglaublich traurig. das buch war wirkich richtig richtig gut. trotzdem nur 4 sterne weil ich zu ungebildet für die ganzen shakespeare zitate bin und die manchmal echt genervt haben, vorallem wenn gerade eine aufführung war wollte ich einfach nur dass sie szene vorbei ist.

It took me over a year to finish this, and I'm glad it's done now. The story sounded very interesting and someone told me that it's "better than the Secret History" (which I haven't read yet). I started skipping the Shakespeare quotes eventually since apparently it's impossible for this book to have a paragraph/a conversation between the characters without one.

i love this books so much. It's well written,the way the dialogues are written with the name before the phrase makes it a bit easier to read.Love the teather concept and the fact that the book is divided into ACTS and SCENES just like a play. it's my usual type of book but i really liked it. overall it's a really good book in my opinion.

Giving this book 5 stars was an easy decision. At the beginning, I felt like the pacing was too slow and too many detailed descriptions. Towards the second half, it starts to make sense, and i found the pacing was chosen well and it fit this type of story perfectly. I only figured out what truly happened shortly before it was revealed, which is rare, as I usually figure it out within the first third of a book. The characters were well written and they were well rounded, so connecting with them and recognizing them was really easy, as the were consistent and unique, each in their own way. The length of the book was good, and the ending is written in a way, that makes this book stick in your mind. Therefore, easily in the top 3 books I have read this year, which is impressive as it is not a genre i usually gravitate towards. Highly recommend

I picked this book up because a bunch of people have recommended it to me. During the first fifty pages or so I wondered what had gotten into them, praising this novel so highly. I was annoyed by the large amount of Shakespeares quotes and also did not feel any tension being built up. But after Act 1 (yes, the book is divided into Acts and Scenes) I began to enjoy myself reading it, and after one third I did not want to put it down, I had to read on to see what happened and why. So, surprisingly, I really liked this book. It features well-written characters, authentic dialogue and a complex moral issue. As a reader, you can easily solve the crime way earlier than you are supposed to, but I figure that does not impact the reading experience in a negative way. The only downside to this book for me personally were the lengthy descriptions of Shakespeare reenactments, but I could easily skim these passages. And a final note to those who have already read it: What kind of ending is this??

I finally finished this! Tbh this was so hard for me bc i already started it in October/November last year and dnf d it. I just didn't like it. But then i hated looking at my bookshelf and seeing it unfinish and luckily i found it on Spotify as an audiobook. And now I've been listening to it on the way to school. But the thing is idk what to rate it. I don't have a gut feeling which i normally have and decide upon. I'm just glad i can finally put it on my main shelf!

This story is about Oliver who just got out of jail who might have not actually committed the crime he was convicted for. After the ten years he starts telling the proper story about everything that happened at the elite acting school where he and his friends were studying Shakespeare all these years ago. Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this book. Probably could have guessed that I wouldn’t enjoy the amount of references to Shakespeare since I haven’t read or seen any of his plays/books. But I decided to give it a chance because I usually enjoy dark academia. This book however just really didn’t do it for me. I didn’t really care about any of the characters and was rather annoyed by the lengthy parts of Shakespeare references and description of the plays the characters performed. Also the mystery didn’t really get me. It just felt too lengthy and not thrilling for me to be invested in the reveal. However, I am sure there is an audience for this type of book and I probably just shouldn’t have picked this up knowing that there was a big chance of me not liking it. So, if the premise still sounds interesting to you go ahead! You might enjoy the story as many others did!

YES!!this was many things. Granted, some of them are pretentious and obnoxious but in the absolute best way possible.I won’t pretend that I recognized or event ad hoc understood most of the Shakespeare quotes that are littered throughout this book but even so this was very enjoyable.The characters gripped me and the story kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen til the very end.I think ML Rio struck a good balance between purple prose and describing scenes but not insisting on narrating every single thing that happens (e.g. travel from one place to another) which made for a pleasant pace.Was this like the Secret History? Yes I would say. But maybe even a bit more accessible and an easier read.Do recommend if you’re into mystery, 90’s (dark) academia, and theater/arts school. This was fun and I’m sad it’s over.- edit: I read some of the reviews and notice that people had many different experiences and impressions with this which I find a bit surprising but which arguably makes it yet more interesting to me.

Ich war anfangs sehr skeptisch was dieses Buch angeht. Viel Shakespeare und viele Charaktere - ich bin am Anfang ein bisschen durcheinander gekommen und konnte nicht zuordnen wer wer ist (vielleicht bin ich da auch nicht mehr so gut drin). Aber nach den ersten Seiten und ein bisschen Beschäftigung mit dem "who is who" hat die Geschichte mich richtig gepackt und ich konnte das Buch ganz schlecht weg legen.

This book is truely great! At first it can be a bit boring as you need to get to know the whole scenario but once you understand it it's real fun to read it. I think that especially for people that are Shakespeare fans it's a fantastic book, because it's talked about his books a lot. However, if you don't know as much about him (as I do) you still pretty much get it. I reaallly need a second book with more details on Fillipa and Wren because they're such great characters and I think that they have much more potential and therefore, could be even more unfolded. BIG SPOILER!!! I want to know what tf happend to James, because his body was never found right?!

Read in one sitting and I’m a little at loss of words of how good this book is. The story was told very round in my eyes and the single characters vivid. Although coloured through Oliver‘s eyes, you could grasp the others very well. Sometimes I would have loved alternative POV‘s but just because at some marks I was really curious to get more insight.The plot twist was an absolutely shocker for me - I did not see this one coming. 5/5 for me, absolutely!

I think the book was so sure about their concept and relied so much on the dark academia aesthetic that the execution became sloppy. The first two chapters were fine, all the foreshadowing, the introduction of the characters. It’s a really original concept and an intriguing start. And of course I have to say the structure is quite nice, the five act play is a clever and creative idea, but the characters feel flat. The antagonist doesn’t feel mean enough, just some guy who is full of himself, and then suddenly he is way too mean for what happened, it sounds so unnatural and forced. There is no nuance to the character. Nothing that makes you “love and hate him at the same time”, or whatever it is the author tried to achieve. The rest is not better, while the concept with the archetypes is, again, such a cool idea, the actual characters are just so boring and bland. They are not complex morally corrupted people they are just…well some normal sorta dickish kids? They don’t have the theatrics, the Shakespearean extremism that they would need to convey a story like this one. I dont care about any of them, I don’t get their motivations or who they are, which is essential for a story so heavily relying on faceted characters. They feel like a mean dramatic middle school group that just kicked one off the discord server, they just seem so goofy. The way the group falls apart feels so insignificant cause I don’t know the group anyway. The best written group member is arguably James, who has the most compelling story arc and character. With him being the one that injured Richard and running away and also him breaking Olivers nose he has done some immoral things. All the others aren’t even allowed to do that. Its like the author thought the ONE event, not helping Richard, painted everyone half-heartedly in an evil, indefensible, rotten light so the other 350pages have to convince me that they are good people that all love each other like a family and they are oh so perfect, maybe sad, paranoid people that made some mistakes but with an oh so good soul. That’s not what makes an intriguing character nor plot. I want to hate them more. Or love them more. Or at least be able to feel SOMETHING gripping before getting an excuse for their behaviour that wears everything down shoved in my throat. Also for a book that is trying to tell you “You can justify anything if you do it poetically enough” the writing style is way to flat almost fanfiction for my taste. But to say a nice thing too: the Shakespeare quotes are beautifully embedded and the author obviously put a lot of effort into the research. Also, I gotta hand it to the book I desperately needed to give my opinion after finishing it so somehow it moved me to further deal with the story, and that’s what literature is all about isn’t it. Especially the big reveal that James heavily injured Richard was so unsatisfyingly written. Just James telling us dully about the event was just anticlimactic. In conclusion, I really tried to like this book, I really did, but that was not it. (If you liked one of us is lying tho you will like it(okay sorry I have to stop throwing shade at this book)) Also sidenote: you shouldn’t compare it to the secret history just because they are both dark academia novels set in college involving a group were one of them dies. Their essence is SO different and they should be allowed to stand alone and not in presents of the other.

Ich fand the secret history eigentlich in allen Aspekten besser. Die ganzen Charaktere sind ziemlich oberflächlich, nicht sehr schlau und so richtig checkt man sie auch nicht

„If we were Villains“ ist ein Buch, in dem viele Passagen Zitate von Shakespeare enthalten, die mir das Verständnis erschwert haben. Darunter hat dann für mich leider der Spaß am Lesen gelitten. Das Buch dann erstmal zur Seite zu legen und nach einer Pause der Geschichte eine weitere Chance zu geben, war für mich die richtige Entscheidung. Ich konnte in die Story wieder gut reinfinden und fand es am Ende richtig gut. Es war spannend und das Setting ist sehr passend.

5+⭐️ Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass das Buch mich so überzeugen und umhauen würde, weil es in einigen Aspekten doch sehr an 'The Secret History' von Donna Tartt erinnert und mich das Buch nicht komplett überzeugen konnte. Doch eine Sache, die signifikant anders war, waren die Charaktere. Hier habe ich nicht nur mit ihnen mitgefiebert, sondern hier habe ich die meisten wirklich gemocht. Und das war das tragischste an der ganzen Geschichte... Ein Drama in fünf Akten, das von Shakespeare, Dark Academia und seinen Figuren und deren Beziehungen zueinander lebt - absolut großartig geschrieben und geplottet! Ich habe wirklich alles gefühlt - vom Spaß der sieben Freunde zusammen auf der Bühne zu stehen bis hin zu all der Eifersucht, der Wut und der Trauer als jeder seine Theaterrolle auch im wirklichen Leben nicht ablegen konnte und dadurch alles verschlimmert wurde. Die Thrillerelemente waren nicht so ausgeprägt wie bei anderen Büchern, es gab keinen großen Drang zum Aufklären der Tat, doch das hat es irgendwie noch spannender gemacht - vor allem, da jeder auf gewisse Art verdächtig war und man nicht sagen konnte, wer es getan gaben könnte. Romantisch gesehen gab es auch einige Verstrickungen (ein paar sehr tragische🥺), doch das Hauptaugenmerk lag wirklich auf dem Theater auf der Bühne und im Leben abseits derer. Das Buch war wirklich ein absoluter Sog, super atmosphärisch, fesselnd, wunderschön aber absolut tragisch. Das Ende hätte ich nieee so erwartet und ich hatte tatsächlich ein paar Tränen in den Augen, weil der (oder die) Plottwist(s) so gut aber auch so emotional traurig war(en), doch der letzte Satz gibt schon ein bisschen Hoffnung zurück auch wenn es dahingehend eben sehr offen bleibt... Absolutes Highlight, womit ich nie gerechnet hätte aber es ist einfach außergewöhnlich guuut!💭

Ein stilistisch interessantes Buch, das Liebe zum Theater ausstrahlt. Die Beziehungen der Hauptdarsteller sind sehr komplex und stark emotional aufgeladen. Die Story ist sehr interessant und man wird direkt in den Bahn von Oliver gezogen. Das Buch lässt mich mit einer Vielzahl an Gefühlen zurück und wird mich noch länger beschäftigen! Definitiv einzigartige Literatur 📚

If we were villains ist ein perfektes Buch für alle Shakespeare Liebhaber und Theaterkinder. Ich fande das Buch auch sehr spannend und die verschiedenen Charaktere und Beziehungen sehr gut geschrieben. Allerdings war es auch ab und zu sehr anspruchsvoll und ich hab bedeutend länger gebraucht als sonst beim lesen um alle Zusammenhänge zu verstehen.

Dieses Buch lag zwei Jahre auf meinem SuB und ich habe sooo lange gebraucht, um es endlich zu lesen. Ich war total aufgeregt und hatte gleichzeitig Angst, dass es meinen hohen Erwartungen nicht gerecht wird – vor allem, weil es so gehypt wird. 😅 Und obwohl ich noch nicht viele Dark Academia Bücher gelesen habe, dachte ich, dies wäre der perfekte Einstieg. War es das? Jein. Die Geschichte dreht sich um sieben TheaterschülerInnen in ihrem letzten Jahr und als etwas Schreckliches passiert, treffen sie meiner Meinung nach oft ziemlich unlogische Entscheidungen. Das Buch ist durchzogen von Shakespeare-Zitaten und Referenzen, was für mich manchmal anstrengend war und die Handlung etwas verlangsamt hat. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass die Spannung oft verloren ging, weil vieles einfach vorhersehbar war. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Aber: Die Charaktere sind sehr realistisch und facettenreich dargestellt und ich mochte es. Ich mochte auch, wie sie in all ihrer Unvollkommenheit gezeigt wurden. Auch das Setting war richtig atmosphärisch und wunderschön beschrieben. Trotzdem hat sich die Geschichte für mich stellenweise gezogen und ich wusste schon früh, wo das alles hinführen würde. Am Ende war ich emotional berührt und das Buch hat mich irgendwie auch ein bisschen traurig gemacht. 🖤 Ich wusste, dass es kein Feel-Good-Buch sein würde, aber die Düsternis hat mich mehr mitgenommen, als ich dachte. Trotz meiner gemischten Gefühle werde ich bestimmt noch oft an dieses Buch zurückdenken. Mochtet ihr diese Geschichte?

As an non native English speaker, I cannot recommend this book to you. Maybe if you can understand it better than I could. I found it boring und way too long. It could have like 200 pages less, then I would have enjoyed it. Because half of the time nothing happens. It took me nearly 3 weeks to finish this book. The characters are .. something I guess? Bland, stereotypical and I still have no clue about what makes them special. You don’t get to know them. For the plot twist: I saw it coming, like half way through the book. It was so obvious and I’m normally someone who doesn’t get a plot twist. This was a total waste of time and I’m super pissed off. I hate #booktok because it’s recommended me books like this and The Atlas Six, two books that pretends to be so cool and edgy, but maybe I’m just to stupid to get it. I’m no thesperian or Shakespearian or whatever. I’m also not so edgy. Sorry I just can’t get over the fact that I paid money for this book. Or wasted my time. Rant over.

In dem Buch "If We Were Villains" geht es um eine Gruppe von Schauspielstudenten an einer Elite-Kunsthochschule. Sie beschäftigen sich dort intensiv mit Shakespeare. Eines Tages werden sie in einen Mordfall verwickelt. Jahre später erinnert sich Oliver, der Erzähler, an die Ereignisse, die zum Tod eines Kommilitonen führten. Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte steht die Frage, wer wirklich für den Mord verantwortlich ist - und welche Rolle Kunst, Rivalität und Besessenheit bei dem tragischen Vorfall gespielt haben. Positiv fand ich das Setting und die Atmosphäre. Da ich selbst einige Werke von Shakespeare gelesen habe, konnte ich manche Szenen nachvollziehen und genießen. Auch der Schreibstil der Autorin ist mir an einigen Stellen positiv aufgefallen, da er gut zum literarischen Thema passt und hilft, die Emotionen der Charaktere wiederzugeben. Leider gibt es auch ein paar negative Punkte: Manchmal wirkte die Story unnötig kompliziert. Das ständige Einflechten von Shakespeare-Zitaten, der internen Rivalität und der „Theatermentalität“ der Charaktere kann verwirrend wirken und lenkt zu sehr von der eigentlichen Krimihandlung ab. Auch die Auflösung des Mordes war für mich etwas enttäuschend, da sie zu sehr auf melodramatische Elemente setzt und zu wenig Überraschungen bietet. Die Spannung, die das ganze Buch über aufgebaut wurde, ging am Ende etwas verloren. Trotz dieser Mängel ist das Buch wegen seiner Atmosphäre und der Tiefe der Gefühle, die es hervorruft, bemerkenswert. Es ist ein interessantes und vielschichtiges Werk, das vor allem Shakespeare-Fans und Liebhaber des literarischen Dramas faszinieren wird. Auch wenn die Komplexität und die melodramatische Auflösung abschrecken kann, wird es für manche Leser eine faszinierende Reise in die Welt des Theaters und der menschlichen Leidenschaften bleiben. Da es sich um das Debüt der Autorin handelt, bin ich geneigt, ihr für ihren Ehrgeiz und für die Art und Weise, wie sie den Geist des Theaters zumindest teilweise einfängt, zusätzliche Punkte zu geben. Das Buch ist zwar kein Meisterwerk, aber es ist auf jeden Fall lesenswert. 4/5 ⭐

I really enjoyed reading this a lot. The characters were lovely, pretty well rounded and all in all wonderfully flawed. While I was occasionally having trouble truly understanding their motivations, I'm assuming it is at least partly because I am not particularly familiar with Shakespeare's work. I suspect that everyone who really knows their Shakespeare might have a lot more insight in the developments of the plot. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the nuanced relationships and while the ending was somewhat predictable, it was also incredibly beautiful and sad. I would recommend this to everyone who is looking for a gripping yet thoughtful read with a hint of classical tragedy.

If we were villains was an beautifully written book about a theatre group. I loved the idea of every member of the friend group had their own role representing their personality. The dark academia atmosphere was EVERYTHINGGG!!! Sometimes their plays were a bit boring… I also hated Meredith. All the other characters have my heart. <3 But james please stop talking in Shakespeare quotes i beg you… also stop hiding thx gay tragedy is NOT my favorite trope.

Als Theaterschülerin und großer Fan von Dark academia war dieses Buch einfach nur perfekt. Jeder Charakter ist einzigartig und wächst einem ans Herz, und fiebert mit ihnen mit. Besonders gut fand ich auch die Inszenierungen, die die Theaterschüler aufführen, man hat das Gefühl, bei den Vorstellungen Life dabei zu sein. Der Mordfall hat sich zwar durch das gesamte Buch gezogen, aber blieb eher im Hintergrund präsent, dadurch wurde die Atmosphäre noch mal etwas düsterer. Alles in allem einfach ein super gutes Buch!

I gotta say when I first started the book i felt as though i was reading scriptures and didn’t really feel like taking forever to understand (i’m not all too familiar with shakespeares plays to immediately know what passages mean) but the nerd in me made me do a deep dive into the mentioned plays which kinda helped with predicting what happened to richard but jesus christ. James and oliver. yall. the way in which i just sat there at one point and wondered if any of this would have happened if these two just fucking said what they felt. like straight forward but of course they’re drama majors and of course they couldn’t do it like normal people. do i think james is alive? i think it would be way too cruel to make him doubt james is dead when he is. my god. the hectic violent scenes were probably my favorite because of how much they made me feel like i was watching a movie - i could almost see it play out, the music swelling etc etc. so. good. i’m convinced that if i was a shakespeare fanatic i would have probably declared this book my favorite of all time but alas. I really loved oliver as a main character a lot even though i was skeptical in the beginning. I loved how he often wondered about the intentions and feelings of others but they understood him so clearly. and as meredith said, he’s just so good. he’s good and clear with his feelings he’s so bad at hiding them. i loved it. truly. oh and bc i just thought of this after questioning what the point of faking his death was: maybe it’s like a metaphorical death? we often read that james has identity issues and even forgets himself in the characters he plays. maybe that death was meant for him to leave that part of him and that life behind and start new…yeah anyway
