Gives really an accurate , well written overview of some fundamental science knowledge one should at least have heard of. Even though published in 2003 a lot of it is still up to date. Would be interesting to have an updated version for today, because a lot has happened in the last 13 years, with many new evidence provided for some of the introduced theories. I liked that Bill Bryson always took the time to tell us something about the scientist behind the science, especially their partly miserable lives. I think the mentioned quote of Humboldt was the most fitting: "... there are three stages in scientific discovery: first, people deny it is true; then they deny that it is important; finally they credit the wrong person."

A Short History of Nearly Everything von Bill Bryson gibt einen interessanten Überblick über die Geschichte des Universums, der Erde und der Menschheit. Das Buch ist wirklich vollgepackt mit Informationen, für meinen Geschmack fast ein bisschen zu sehr. Ich habe das Buch über einen ziemlich langen Zeitraum gelesen, dann sobald ich ein Kapitel beendet hatte, hatte ich das Gefühl Zeit zu brauchen um all die Informationen zu verarbeiten, bevor ich weiterlesen konnte. Dennoch habe ich schon jetzt, ein paar Wochen nachdem ich das Buch beendet habe, das Gefühl vieles wieder vergessen zu haben. Zudem schweift Bryson auch immer wieder etwas ab indem er fast mehr über die Leben der Wissenschaftler schreibt, als über die Wissenschaft selbst. Zwar waren diese Anekdoten oftmals interessant oder amüsant, doch ich hätte mir mehr gewünscht, dass die Wissenschaftlichen Konzepte und Ideen etwas ausführlicher hätten behandelt werden können. Auch ist das Buch bereits 2003 erschienen und ich hätte mir gewünscht, dass in den neueren Versionen vielleicht einige Inhalte etwas hätten aktualisiert werden können, da ich teilweise das Gefühl hatte das gewisse Dinge nicht mehr auf dem neusten Stand sind. Insgesamt war das Buch dennoch interessant und bietet zumindest einen Überblick über eine Vielzahl von Themen.
