I am actually being generous with the rating (edit: first had 3☆) because there was a lot I didn't like, but it wasn't awful, and I will read volume two. I just think it's kinda obvious this is a debut novel. The writing could have been better, and it just felt weird from time to time. This is a story about werewolves and mates. Max and his bestie (direct quote) Katie are invited to the Blue Moon Festival, where every unmated wolf over 16 goes to find their mate. Max doesn't even want to find someone but goes because Katie is excited. As one can expect, and the title alludes to, he does find someone, namely the alphas son, Jasper. Well, unfortunately, he is a giant asshole and wants nothing to do with him... All characters are sometimes a bit of an asshole though 😅 They are typical YA characters, and there is a lot of getting angry over nothing or really suddenly, misunderstandings (or more like not wanting to understand), and just a lot of drama. Sometimes, the atmosphere was a bit too frustrating imo. I am also not the biggest fan of the "fated mates" trope because they are basically in love without knowing or even liking each other. Still better than insta love, I guess. The topic of "suddenly gay" was also portrayed a bit weird, as in it isn't really much of a topic at all. Max is surprised that his mate is a guy and is scared of the reactions of others, but it's much more important that he's the alpha's son. I mean, that's fine, but he also mentions that being gay is basically unheard of in werewolf society, but also nobody cares, and he says that it's perfectly normal in human society, as if homophobia doesn't exist (I wish) 😅 Like it feels as if it's a queernormative setting without being one. Also btw, it has a lot of pop-culture references, like Tiktok, Netflix, Star Wars, Animal Crossing etc. Well, and the ending sucked. Total bullshit, but that's why we have a second volume 😅 I hope they also shift more in that. Often, it was like, "we don't have time to shift," but the bad guys always had time xD (yes, there also is some action/fighting and stuff). I also hope that one situation just ends in a poly relationship. I realize I haven't said anything positive... maybe I should rate this lower (edit: I did). I will re-evaluate after vol. 2. It's just that even though I have so much to complain, I am not mad about this book. It was still quick to read and had an interesting worldbuilding. I want to know how the characters get together. Since I already got vol. 2 when it was on sale, I'll read it next.

Ich bin auf dieses Buch aufmerksam geworden, weil es jemand als Teen Wolf Sterek fanfic-artig beschrieben hat - und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Single Werwölfe des Elite Pack treffen sich alle paar Jahre zum Blue Moon Festival, um ihre (soul)mates zu finden. Der Hauptchara Max, welcher aus einer stinknormalen Familie kommt, will damit eigentlich nichts am Hut haben, kommt aber mit Blick auf die Vorfreude seiner besten Freundin Katie mit. Nur muss er feststellen, dass sein mate ausgerechnet Jasper, der Sohn des Rudelalphas ist. Und den kann er so gar nicht ausstehen - was auf Gegenseitigkeit zu beruhen scheint. Als wäre das noch nicht genug, ist Homosexualität unter Wölfen nicht üblich und besonders Jasper steht zusätzlich unter dem Druck und Erwartungen der Wolfsgesellschaft. Mit aus diesem Grund verhält Jasper sich auch die meiste Zeit des Buches über wie ein ziemliches Arschloch und ist nicht gut mit Emotionen generell, wobei auch Max nicht als Engel bezeichnet werden kann. Was mir dabei zwischen den beiden aber gefällt, ist, dass sie sich damit auch konfrontieren und zu ihrem Verhalten stehen und sich entschuldigen können - das Ganze wird nicht tot geschwiegen. Und man lernt von beiden auch andere Seiten kennen und besonders eine Szene im Buch teasert an, wie ihre Beziehung in Zukunft aussehen könnte (auf positive art). Not gonna lie, besonders Jasper hat mich regelmäßig ganz schön auf die Palme gebracht und das Ende hat mich sooo aufgeregt, aber ich bin super gespannt, wie das mit den beiden im Fortsetzungsband weiter gehen wird! Abgesehen von der Beziehung zwischen Jasper und Max gab es auch andere Charaktere, die mit ihrer Partnerwahl und Gesellschaftsnormen zu kämpfen hatten. Auf die will ich, um Spoiler gering zu halten, nicht detaillierter eingehen, aber ich fand es sehr cool, dass diese verschiedenen Situationen im Buch angesprochen wurden. Ich habe etwas gebraucht, um ins Buch reinzukommen und mich an die Schriftart und engen Zeilen zu gewöhnen und der Schreibstil ist anfangs nicht allzu überragend, macht mittendrin seltsamerweise aber einen merkbaren Sprung und wird urplötzlich besser. Aber insgesamt hat mir das Buch sehr gut gefallen und ich kann nicht erwarten, wie es weiter geht. Nach langer Zeit war es mal wieder ein Buch, was ich regelrecht verschlungen habe. Die Story und das Hin und Her zwischen Beziehungs- und Pack Drama (mit Betonung auf Drama, darauf sollte man vorbereitet sein) hat mich einfach gepackt und besonders die Freundschaften im Buch haben mir gut gefallen (und Aisha ist einfach großartig). Aber kleine Warnung, um richtige Erwartungen zu setzen: 1. Es handelt sich hier um YA (teilweise sogar gefühlt schon fast eher Middle Grade für den 1. Teil des Buchs), Teenage Angst and Awkwardness ist vorhanden und wer aufgrund der Beschreibung auf etwas Erotik hofft, wird definitiv enttäuscht! 2. Für mich war das Buch 4,5 Sterne, weil es genau das war, was ich gesucht und erwartet hatte. Objektiv gesehen ist es kein Meisterwerk, so werden Dinge wie Charakterentwicklung und Worldbuilding hier im 1. Band nur angeschnitten und die Charaktere sind nicht allzu tiefgründig/vielschichtig, weshalb man mit einer entsprechenden Erwartungshaltung an dieses Buch gehen sollte.
