I just adore this book and will probably re-read it many times in my life. It is both harrowing and moving, inspiring hope beyond hope. With a litany of female characters to fall in love with, it’s hard not to get instantly attached to this novel. But for me the most profound bits were the discussions around faith, and particularly the two separated sisters individual reconstructions of their faith from the ‘God’ image to something more abstract, playful, and all together wonderful. I am really not surprised that this book is as successful as it is, it’s a wonder and a blessing to read. ❤️

Celie und Nettie sind Schwestern und leben als Schwarze Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts im ländlichen Süden der USA. Celie muss eine unglückliche Ehe mit einem Mann eingehen, der sie misshandelt, während Nettie als Missionarin nach Afrika geht. Dieser Briefroman, in dem Celie erst an Gott und später an ihre Schwester schreibt, aber auch Nettie an Celie, der diese Briefe von ihrem Ehemann vorenthalten werden, ist definitiv ein Klassiker, auch wenn ich mich in den Schreibstil erst einmal einfinden musste. Ein berührendes Buch, wenn man liest, was Celie und in geringerem Maße Nettie alles durchmachen müssen, mit einem versöhnlichen Ende.

I don’t even know what to say about this book. It immediately draws you in from the first page, grabbing you by the collar and not letting go until you‘ve completed it. Why don’t we read books like this in (german) school in our english classes??? It‘s raw and it‘s real and painful and hopeful and just FULL or life in all its aspects.

Hatte Respekt davor, das Buch im Original zu lesen, da die Sprache wegen Slang und mangelnder Bildung sehr schwierig aussah und war dann überrascht, wie schnell ich mich reingelesen hatte. Die Geschichte von Celie wird in Briefen an Gott erzählt, die sie schreibt, um mit ihrer Situation klarzukommen. Obwohl sich das Buch mit Themen wie Vergewaltigung, Gewalt in Ehe und Familie, Rassismus und Unterdrückung von Farbigen und Frauen auseinandersetzt, hat es sich nie wie 'schwere Kost' angefühlt. Im Gegenteil, es ist ein Buch, das Mut macht und die Kraft der Liebe und das Finden der eigenen Stimme in den Vordergrund stellt. Ich hab so mit Celie mitgefiebert! Und war vom Ende beeindruckt, davon, wie sie innerlich gewachsen ist. Beeindruckend!

Ich fand das Buch ganz gut. Die Themen, die angesprochen wurden sind interessant und wichtig. Ich hatte jedoch große Probleme in das Buch hineinzufinden und hatte teilweise auch oft Probleme, den Gedanken und Erzählungen zu folgen. Trotzdem ist ein wichtiges Buch mit einer starken Message.

Ein sehr berührendes und inspirierendes Buch mit vielen wichtigen Botschaften! Ich habe sehr viele Textstellen markiert, die mich zum Nachdenken gebracht haben. Die Protagonistin, Celie, ist so eine starke Frau. Ich werde auf jeden Fall demnächst auch noch den Film dazu schauen! (Buchclub Februar)

Es geht um Gewalt, Unterdrückung, Rassismus und Ungerechtigkeit Aber es geht auch um Liebe, Stärke und Emanzipation. Sofia war - besonders am Anfang - meine Heldin Beeindruckend fand ich auch die Verbindung von Celie und Nettie und auch von Shug und Celie . Tip: Der Film dazu von 1985 ist ein absolutes Meisterwerk und sehr zu empfehlen

What a straight to the truth keep book. The story has shocked and amazed me at the same time. It's emotional and touching to read. A bit troubeling for me since english isn't my native language and the book was a bit exhausting written (I get it tho why). Normally English isn't a problem but wow. A bit hard for me :'D Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it and I loved the developement of characters and story.

If god ever listened to poor colored women the world would be a different place, I can tell you. The book shows us what it is to be a black woman. The main characters - Celie, her sister Nettie, her lover Shug, and her friend Sofia - experience the hardships of life in a small Georgia town in the first half of the last century. Celie's father instructed her never to reveal what he had done to her. Except to God. That’s why the whole book consists of her letters to “an old white bearded man sitting on a cloud”, through which she shares moments from her challenging life. Despite life's horrors, the women in the book support, help, and inspire one another. Alongside them, Celie comes to realize that God is neither male nor female; God represents the beauty and joy that surrounds her even during the darkest times. Alice Walker places patriarchal male dominance on the same plane as racism. The power of a man in a family is compared to the unlimited power of a white slave owner. The system is completely rotten: white men discriminate against black men, and black men oppress black women. “Look at you. You black, you pore, you ugly, you a woman. Goddam, he say, you nothing at all”. “The Color Purple” is a feminist utopia where the generally accepted concepts of gender roles are overturned. Throughout the book, the characters discover their strength: what was once invisible becomes evident, and those who were once silenced now have the right to speak up.

Un libro que refleja como la mujer era maltratada, usada como un objeto o bien como una moneda de cambio, como si no se tratara de un ser humano. El personaje principal CELIE se va desarrollando poco a poco y gracias a otros personajes como lo son Sofía y Shug ella empieza a ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista y salir de esa burbuja amen la que había estado encerrada y al fin buscar la felicidad. C
