„White Sand“ by Brandon Sanderson is a graphic novel in the Cosmere centered around a desert-like planet that is inhabited by sand mages and other factions. We follow tree point of views in this first book. The most exciting one of those is in my opinion a young sand mage that has always struggled to be accepted in his community due to the lack of powers. He wasn’t the most likeable character but he had a great journey. The other two storylines didn’t interest me as much. One is a group of people from a different side of the planet that is hoping to find a weapon. The group and their style was such a juxtaposition to the sand mages that it didn’t feel organic to me. They seemed to come from a different planet but not in an interesting but rather in a jarring way that took me out of the story. The other POV was an inhabitant of the big city on the hunt for a specific individual. The graphic style was unique and really strong in the action scenes but overall the novel relied to much on telling and not showing. I’m a big fan of the Cosmere novels and I’m fairly familiar with the different worlds. I am curious how this magic will find its way into the other known worlds but I’m not going to continue the graphic novels for now. Maybe some future hints in the Sanderson books will change my mind.
