Fand das Buch klang interessant! Aber leider fand ich die Story lahm! Die Charaktere waren schlecht beschrieben so das ich Probleme mit der Vorstellung hatte! Was auch immer ein Problem ist wenn die Kapitel jedes Mal zu einer anderen Person springen ! Komme damit leider nicht klar !!!

I liked the military school setting and the trials! It was adventures and the world is great! Also liked the two POVs and the love between those two. But Helene kind of destroyed the romance for me. In total I really enjoyed reading this book! It was fast paced and the two POVs kept it interesting!

I don't know how long i would've gone to hold it on pause because i actually know i'll never continue reading it, so i'm going to stop lying to myself and just dnf it. Which actually hurts a lot because i wanted to read it for so long and had such high expectations and actually thought i'd love it, which unfortunately wasn't the case. this is a very back to the roots kinda dystopian ya fantasy that is set in a very interesting and unique world… kinda gives me ancient rome vibes…we have two interesting main characters who follow their own stories but their path keeps crossing now and then it is a very political fantasy for that it is ya (i personally love that) but the love interest situation is unique and very interesting as well

Vor einem knappen Jahrzehnt habe ich das Buch schon einmal gelesen und damals gesagt, es ist das beste YA Fantasybuch, das ich je gelesen habe. Jahrelang habe ich es immer wieder empfohlen, obwohl ich mich irgendwann kaum noch an den Inhalt erinnern konnte, sondern nur an dieses Gefühl. Jetzt habe ich es endlich geschafft, noch einmal in "An Ember in the Ashes" einzutauchen und kann auch jetzt noch sagen, dass es das beste YA Fantasybuch ist, das ich jemals gelesen habe. Also auch in den letzten 10 Jahren konnte nichts die Geschichte von Elias & Laia toppen. Sabaa Tahir hat einen unglaublich bildgewaltigen Schreibstil, der unter die Haut geht. Jedes Wort sitzt. Die Welt, die sie erschaffen hat, ist erschreckend grausam, dabei aber durchweg authentisch. Die Fantasy Aspekte sind so perfekt in die Handlung eingewoben, dass sie beinahe real erscheinen. Als wäre es völlig natürlich, würde so etwas wirklich existieren. Dabei schafft sie zudem Figuren, die so facettenreich und voller Tiefe sind, dass man selbst zu vermeintlich unbedeutenden Nebenfiguren eine so tiefe Bindung aufbaut, dass alles Leid, was ihnen widerfährt, nahe geht. Ich habe von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite wieder mitgelitten, schockiert den Atem angehalten, wenn die Kommandantin mit eiskalter Brutalität zugeschlagen hat. Elias, Laia, Izzi, Helene - sie alle sind mir erneut so sehr ans Herz gewachsen! Elias, der sich nichts mehr wünscht als Freiheit. Laia, die für ihren Bruder die schlimmste Folter in Kauf nimmt, nur um ihn zu retten. Izzi, die eine liebe, Treue Seele ist, die das Grauen nicht verdient hat. Und Helene, die von einer Grausamkeit in die nächste gestoßen wird. Wer epische Fantasy mag, mit einem leichten Anflug von Romance, wird hier definitiv auf seine Kosten kommen. Aber(!) man muss mit psychischer und physischer Gewalt klarkommen können. Folter wird hier mitunter relativ detailliert beschrieben!

Nachdem ich jetzt monatelang dazu gedrängt wurde, diese Reihe zu lesen, habe ich es endlich gewagt und was soll ich mehr sagen als: Oh mein Gott! Was war das für ein epischer Auftakt? Ich komme gerade nicht auf mein Leben klar, to be honest. Diese Plottwists und ständigen Kapitel-Cliffhanger haben mein Herz mehr als einmal zum Rasen gebracht. Ein bisschen Schiss vor Band 2 habe ich allerdings trotzdem 🤫 Was ich beim Lesen als besonders angenehm empfunden habe: wir bekommen immer abwechselnd die Sichtweise der beiden Protagonisten zu sehen, was sehr erfrischend ist. Manchmal erfährt man dadurch direkt, was gerade abgeht. Manchmal hängen wir dadurch erst recht in den Seilen und müssen noch länger um Charaktere bangen. Mein Fazit: Ein Must-Read für alle Fantasy-Fans, die gerne krasse Settings genießen und bei noch schwereren Entscheidungen, zwischen morally grey und vollkommen verdorben, mitfiebern. Das Buch beinhaltet etwas Romance, aber kein Spice.

I began reading this book without any expectations and came out ordering the rest of the series right after I finished it. This book has all the things a good fantasy read needs: A power-hungry elite that oppresses the people, a rebel movement working in the shadows, trials and tribulations, political schemes, intrigues, spies, a dash of magic and nuanced characters that come alive on the pages. Tahir’s writing is beautiful and precise, her characters are flawed, yet likable, their connections real and warm, contrasting the bleak world they are forced to survive. Deeply rooted in Arabian mythology, „An Ember In The Ashes“ is an intriguing, fast-paced read I won’t forget anytime soon.

It took me a little while to get I this, but the more complicated the relationships of the protagonists with the people in their lives became, the more entranced I became by the story. The story starts off with both the protagonists and I as a reader believing that everything is pretty clear-cut. There's the Martial empire that oppreses the Scholar population and there's the people working for this empire and the people who are victimized and those fighting in the resistance. But more and more we see the doubts and conflicts of some of the Martials, some even actively working against the empire, and on the other side the Scholar resistance fighting against each other and occasionally even for the Martials (even if not always on purpose). I have a fondness for stories with two opposite factions where both of them are bad, and this book plays right into that. I can't wait to see how this continues to pan out for the protagonists as well as the other characters we met, some of which I want to be saved and some of which I want to rot in hell.

Auch wenn die Militärakademie einer Gladiatorschule gleichkommt, ist vom Rest der Welt aber nicht viel bekannt. Tahir erzählt uns zwar, dass das Kaiserreich groß ist und die Macht des Militär weit reicht, deutlich wird die aber nicht. Die wiederkehrenden übernatürlichen Elemente sind sehr verwirrend. Die Charaktere kennen nur alte Mythen, keiner ahnt, dass es die dunklen Kreaturen wirklich existieren. Doch dann greift eine Schattengestalt Lama an.In Sachen Brutalität hält das Buch nicht zurück, wobei es auch hier Widersprüche in der Umsetzung gibt. So wird wiederholt darauf hingewiesen, dass Laras Stamm, die Scholar, brutal ermordet wurde, bis auf eine Szene zu Beginn wird dies nicht näher verdeutlicht. Anders verhält es sich während der Trias. Mord, Gewalt und Vergewaltigungen passieren regelmäßig.Im Laufe von „An Ember In The Ashes“ hätte ich mir eine Erklärung gewünscht, warum eigentlich Jugendliche unter 20 Jahre antreten müssen, um Kaiser zu werden. Warum wurden die älteren, reiferen Charaktere ausgeschlossen?Zu Beginn von „An Ember In The Ashes“ ist Laia noch sehr naiv, aber im Laufe der Geschichte entwickelt sie sich weiter und handelt bedachter. Leider ist Lara nur nur Teil eines Liebensdreiecks, sondern von zweien. Dabei ist die Entwicklung und Logik katastrophal. Elias gehört zu der herrschenden Militärklasse und sieht Lara immer nur zufällig. Nach und nach entwickeln sich bei ihm Gefühle ohne mit Lara gesprochen zu haben.„An Ember In The Ashes“ von Sabaa Tahir wird sehr gehyped. Es gehört aber zu den Büchern, die an den Hype nicht ran kommen. Viele Elemente im Weltenaufbau sind verwirrend und wenig durchdacht. Am Ende bleiben mehr Fragen offen als üblich bei einen Reihenauftakt.

2.5 stars An Ember in the Ashes was different than I expected it to be. In my mind, it was about Elias & Laia and how they fall in love with each other regardless of the circumstances and the different worlds they come from. I guess they do in the end, but really it's more of a sideshow. I also don't really understand the relationship between Elias and Helena. On the one hand they are best friends since childhood, then they are also attracted to each other, but finally there is always a lot of distrust between them. At the end this is cleared up a bit, but this was not really logical for me. As a result, I didn't really relate to the two protagonists and found the story rather emotionless. How can you empathize if you don't sympathize with any of the characters, be it Elias and Laia or Helena and Kinan? Regardless, I found the idea of the story with the trials that have to be overcome quite good and I also liked the world that the author came up with. In my opinion, the only thing missing was the emotions and to my taste it could have been more about the relationships between the individual characters. I don't think I will read the next books in the series either.

Oh my gooood. I finished this book 2 days ago and still can't stop thinking about the characters and everything that happened. I'm definitely in a book hangover and don't know how to get out, damnit. But I'm so thankful that there'll be a sequel (in 2016!  HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE UNTIL THEN?!?) because that ending ... well it was cruel to end a book like that. Especially since it was planned to be a stand-alone. Thank god it isn't! I got into this without knowing ANYTHING about the book. I had no idea what it is about or what I can expect. Usually I read a few reviews before reading a book and am definitely checking out the synopsis ... I did that once for An Ember in the Ashes, when I added it to my TBR, but forgot about it again - I guess that was a good thing! I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this book because it's not something I'd normally pick up ... a Rome-like world? Idk, that was never my thing. However, I fell in love with the characters! The book is told in dual POV - Elias and Laia - and even if I wanted to, I couldn't decide which one I liked more. They were both very different and interesting to read. "Fear is only your enemy if you allow it to be." Laia is a great! She seems to be whiny and scared at first but that changes eventually and she understands that there's more about her than her fear of the Masks, amazingly skilled and deadly soldiers. She fights for her and her brother's freedom with everything she has and does things that are seriously admirable. Elias on the other hand is always strong and though. He has to be since he's a Mask. They don't show emotions or fear. But he's different ... and I liked him for that. Everyone seemed so careless and did whatever they were told but not him. I just really liked him, okay? He's a great character and I'm so, so, soooo looking forward to see more of him (especially with Laia!) "There are two kinds of guilt. The kind that's a burden and the kind that gives you purpose. Let your guilt be your fuel. Let it remind you of who you want to be. Draw a line in your mind. Never cross it again. You have a soul. It's damaged but it's there. Don't let them take it from you." But that brings me to the one thing that disturbed me a bit ... the romance. I usually don't mind love-triangles - well, as long as they're not overpowering and weird. In this book you're faced with a love-square of some kinds ... it's complicated and hard to describe. There could be someone for Elias, there could be one for Laia but then there's Laia and Elias together and well ... I want this to work. That's one thing I'm very much looking forward to in the sequel! I have hiiiigh hopes for them and hope I won't be disappointed in the end! As you can guess from my rating, I loved this book. So much. It was different and unique and Sabaa Tahir completely drew me into her story and her world. Her writing was fantastic and even though there were some "slower" parts it never got boring or annoying. Never. I think that says a lot! Ich fand dieses Buch sehr einfach zu lesen und bin nur so durch das Buch durch geflogen. Die Charaktere werden hierbei sehr gut beschrieben und die Handlung hat für mich genau das richtige Tempo. Habe auch direkt mit dem zweiten Teil angefangen und bin gespannt, was noch auf mich wartet. Hinweis: checkt gern die triggerwarnungen vor dem Lesen 🫶🏻

4.5 stars! It was so so good! Laia is a perfect protagonist, she has flaws and doubts and hopes and all of them absolutely convincing and captivating. Throughout the journey, she develops from an average Scholar girl to a brave and determined woman, which I loved because it was so well done and for once, there is no sign of this unrealistic, sudden heroism. When she tries to accomplish her task of spying on one of the most cruel, unforgiving and actually scary women that I have ever met in YA novels, she feels and acts as everyone with a brain would: she is terrified and tried to stay away from the Commandant's attention. Her bravery needs time to form and strenghten itself. When it has fully grown, seeing her realize that it's not her brother's voice pushing her to stay strong and keep figthing, but her own made my heart melt and by then I was totally sure Laia had overwhelmed me as a character. Sam thing applies to Elias. At the very beginning of the story, he is simply a boy sick of being forced to do cruel thing by the Empire and who therefore plans to break free by deserting. But his understanding of what is really going on around him, at the Blackcliff military school and the Martial Empire, is like Laia's bravery something that has to be learned. By growing stronger in his character and also more determined, Elias got closer and closer to me, just like Laia did. Apart from the two spectacular main characters, we do get great fight scenes, a nice amount of mystery and magic as well as interesting, vivid minor characters and special relationships. Whether it's the bond between siblings, unexpected friendships or heart-breaking romantic relationships, I couldn't ask for more. In the end, I am so excited to see where the next book will go, because we are left with a rather difficult situation at the ending of the story and I am dying to know how things will go on. Goodness, there are so much possibilities, as to what might happen to our beloved characters, the Resistance and the Empire itself!

Ich hatte am Anfang ein paar Probleme, in die Story reinzukommen aber etwa ab der Hälfte habe ich für die Story gebrannt und wollte immer nur weiter lesen. Ich mag das Setting, es ist alles sehr brutal aufgebaut, aber gleichzeitig auch authentisch und emotional. Elias und Laia gaben definitiv noch ein riesiges Abenteuer vor sich und ich denke, jetzt geht's erst so richtig los!

Amazing book. It has great characters and Laias transformation is wonderful. Sabaa Tahir has created a new and breathtaking world wich includes so much different points that catches you as reader and didn't let you go.I am so excited for the second book, I don't want to wait any longer. You are doing a reat job, Sabaa Tahir. I want to read more from you!

Charaktere: Laia gehört dem Stamm der Kundigen an, der seit ewigen Zeiten von den Martialen unterdrückt wird. Die Martialen erinnern an die alten Römer mit ihren Hierachien, Intrigen und selbst den Namen und versuchen die Kundigenkultur und -Traditionen so gut wie möglich auszurotten. Laia wächst gemeinsam mit ihrem Bruder Darin bei den Großeltern auf, nachdem ihre im Widerstand gegen die Martialenherrschaft aktiven Eltern getötet wurden. Doch eines Tages sucht eine Maske ihr Zuhause heim, tötet die Großeltern und nimmt Darin gefangen. Laia kann nur fliehen, denn gegen eine Maske kann sie weißgott nichts ausrichten! Masken nennen sich diejenigen, die eine jahrzehntelange Ausbildung auf der Militärakademie Schwarzkliff absolviert haben und Masken tragen, die mit ihrem Gesicht verwachsen sind. Sie ist ganz auf sich gestellt, allein und voller Schuldgefühle, weil sie Darin nicht geholfen hat und sucht in ihrer Verzweiflung den Widerstand auf, um Hilfe bei der Befreiung Darins zu erbitten. Der Widerstandsführer sagt ihr seine Hilfe zu, verlangt jedoch als Gegenleistung, dass sie sich als Sklavenmädchen getarnt nach Schwarzkliff schmuggelt, um die Kommandantin der Militärakademie auszuspionieren, die die erfolgreichste und grausamste Maske dieser Zeit ist – eine Todesmission, dessen ist Laia sich bewusst, aber was bleibt ihr anderes übrig, wenn sie ihren einzigen noch lebenden Verwandten retten möchte? Elias ist ein Schüler Schwarzkliffs, dessen Maske nicht so recht verwachsen will, weil er sie zu jedem nur möglichen Zeitpunkt von seinem Gesicht reißt. Er wuchs unter Stammesleuten auf, weil seine Mutter, die Kommandantin der Militärakademie, ihn direkt nach der Geburt in der Wüste zurückließ. Er kann die Prinzipien Schwarzkliffs nicht mit denen vereinen, die seine Ziehmutter ihn viele Jahre gelehrt hatte. Doch bevor er seinen Plan zu desertieren in die Tat umsetzen kann, stattet ihm ein Augur einen Besuch ab. Ein allwissender Augur und Mitbegründer Schwarzkliffs. Dieser prophezeit ihm, dass auch die Flucht ihn nicht glücklich machen wird und lässt ihm die Wahl, den einfachen Weg zu gehen oder sich seinem Schicksal zu stellen. Und so wird Elias bei der Abschlussfeier zu einem von 4 Anwärtern auf das Amt des Imperators ausgerufen und muss sich den tödlichen Prüfungen stellen… Meine Meinung: Mit Laia, Elias und dessen Schwarzkliff-Freundin Helena schafft Tahir authentische Charaktere, mit denen man sich schnell identifiziert und von Anfang bis Ende des Buches fiebert und leidet. Laia entwickelt sich im Laufe des Buches von einem ängstlichen, kleinen Mädchen zu einer selbstlosen, und gezwungenermaßen mutigen, Frau. Elias lernt als Gefangener seiner Abstammung, der Gens Veturia, was es wirklich heißt, frei zu sein. Und die Offenbarung von Helenas Gefühlsleben am Ende des Buches, verleiht der gesamten Geschichte eine neue Bedeutung. Die Gewalt, Folter und Kälte, die der Kommandantin auf Schritt und Tritt begleitet, ist verstörend und macht sie zu dem perfekten Antagonisten. Ein kurzes Gespräch mit ihrem Sohn kurz vor dessen geplanter Ermordung, lässt auf etwas Mitgefühl und Skrupel hoffen, aber das Gespräch verläuft anders als man denkt und man bleibt mit offenem Mund und schreckerstarrtem Blick zurück und fragt sich, wie man nur einen solchen Charakter erschaffen konnte! Tahir schreibt flüssig und fesselnd, sodass ich das Buch nicht einen Moment aus den Händen legen konnte. Sie findet genau das richtige Maß an Spannung, Action und Liebesgeschichte. Letzteres entwickelt sich nicht, wie ich es anfangs zu wissen geglaubt hatte, was mich absolut positiv überraschte! Das Buch war seit langem das Beste! Kann ich jedem nur empfehlen! Am liebsten 6 von 5 Sternen.❤

The field of battle is my temple. The swordpoint is my priest. The dance of death is my prayer. The killing blow is my release. My poor heart!! I got so attached to Elias, Laia and Helene and all Sabaa Tahir does is letting them suffer again and again 😭 The setting of the book is so interesting - inspired by ancient Rome with Arabic legends woven into it. The worldbuilding is awesome and especially Blackcliff is described so vividly, I felt like seeing it with my own eyes. The characters are created with so much love and detail and I was able to really connect with them. To me it's most important that a story touches me and really makes me feel something and An Ember in the Ashes gave me all the feels! What a wild ride! As long as there is life, there is hope.

OKAY OKAY OKAY I THINK I HAVE FOUND THE ONE BOOK I AM GOING TO LOVE FOREVER AND EVER. I dont even know how to explain what the story is because it was so many things that build up the story so well. The story kept me hooked on to it and not once did I feel the story lagged or why is this happening or why are you telling me this now? It is written well, the narrative is crisp and so god damn good. You get the right amount of information at the right time to keep you satisfied and for you to keep looking for answers as well. The story was enticing and teasing me at times, I mean wasn't sure if I should use my own brain or listen to the author, my brain kept on saying no no no don't and I would still do it because hey that person is trust worthy Sabaa wrote it. LOOK! The characters are beautiful, each one of them has a back story which gives me an idea of how much detail and how much thought has been given into the world building, how everything is been linked up and formed. Just perfect. My favourite characters besides the main protagonist are Izzi, the cook and Cain. Cain, I think you are adorbs, even they you creep me out. A MUST READ!
