I read half the book in one day and skimmed the rest of it, basically. It's a shame because it had such an interesting premise. In the end, I only cared for Orion just a little, the rest of the characters, even El, were very bland, shallow and/or annoying. I don't think the "school" setting did the story any favours, either. The middle was like reading a manual for a video game that's mostly made up of grinding. It felt like it, too. Exhausting lol. Normally, I'm into books where "nothing happens" - it's where characters can shine, but this one was just lacking. I heard people say that they loved how fleshed out the world was, too. Couldn't disagree more, there wasn't much show over tell, so the info dumping felt very awkward at some points. I really did wanna like it :(

This book is so WHOLESOME. When going into it, I only excepted a wizard school without teachers in which most of the pupils die. But it's so much more. First of all, the protagonist El feels so very original. She's this prophesized evil witch that will devour the world, but in truth she's just a sixteen-year old girl that feels isolated and doesn't want to hurt anyone, even though she's rude on regular terms. It was so much fun reading her perspective! She has the best humor ever. The Scholomance is a fun and original construct itself, and I am excited to learn more about it in the following books. Also, it's such a cruel fact that the only solution the adults could think of to save most of their children is to build a school in which most children die! This is one of the books that you can't put down, and you instantly have to know what will happen in the next chapter. It's also one of those books that you desperately need the sequel to after having read the last sentence, and I am still debating it because the third and final book will only be published in September, which is an eternity away! Please read this novel if you enjoy magic and rude-but-fun-and-not-cringe protagonists and lots of monsters. Thank you!

El, kurz für Galadriel, habe ich schnell in ein Herz geschlossen. Sie ist schlagfertig, ambitioniert und vielleicht mehr als nur ein wenig unhöflich. In der Scholomance kann sie sich das allerdings auch erlauben. Nicht jede*r Schüler*in erlebt Graduation und die, die es tun, sind noch lange nicht in Sicherheit. Es gab einige Situationen, in denen ich stark mit El gefühlt habe, und es ist schön zu sehen, wie sie wächst. Das Buch endet mit einem Cliffhanger, mit dem ich definitiv weiter lesen muss/werde.

Well this was probably one of the best first lines I ever read in my entire life, followed by possibly one of the best first pages. This experience is best described with a quote from Django Unchained: „Gentlemen, you had my curiosity, now you have my attention.“ Also the rest of the book was quite enjoyable. I thought the characters and the world building were very well done, an interesting take on a magical school, that would rather kill that teach you, while still being safer than the outside. Additionally, the main character, El (Galadriel), not only made my Lord of the Rings fangirl heart happy, but she’s also the personification of THE maleficer of the century, but she doesn’t want to give in to her dark side. She’s a rather sarcastic and pragmatic person, who doesn’t like people and also doesn’t really get along very well with the other kids and now we follow her on a journey through the school year, facing various obstacles and actually making friends and allies along the way. The writing was good, maybe a little stretchy at times and I have the feeling that El’s and Orion’s powers could become a little too overpowered in the long run. Since together and at full capacity they could literally be invincible. That’s not really something I like in books, but let’s see what Part 2 will bring up. Nevertheless, this was a very enjoyable read.

This was definitely an interesting read, but also SO slow. The world building did not seem to stop, at every page, I learned something new about the school and the monsters. However, there was surprisingly not a lot of action going on in this book? The last sentence really hooked me for the sequel though and I am hoping for less of El's rambling monologues

Leider kam ich mit dem Schreibstil überhaupt nicht zurecht. Das ganze Buch bestand für mich gefühlt nur aus einem inneren Monolog der Protagonistin, was auf Dauer wirklich anstrengend zu lesen war und auch nicht dafür sorgte, dass ich richtig Lust hatte weiter zu lesen. Die Beschreibungen über die Schule waren zwar ganz interessant, allerdings dachte ich nach dem hundertsten Mal dann doch: ok, alles klar, wir wissen jetzt, dass da drin alles versucht die Schüler zu töten. Ein paar weniger Beschreibungen der selben Sache hätten dem Buch echt gut getan. Die Erklärungen über Vorgänge, Zusammenhänge und einzelne Schüler waren zwar wegen der Komplexität des Weltenbaus teilweise nötig, langweilten dann aber auch recht schnell, weil darunter die tatsächliche Handlung, in der mal was gesagt wird/ mal was passiert gelitten hat. Zudem fand ich die Figuren recht stereotyp und unwirklich, so als würde man über Figuren aus einem Anime lesen und nicht über echte Menschen. Orion ist halt irgendwie der strahlende Held, aber irgendwie auch wie so ein etwas naiv dümmlicher Foodballspieler. Gleichzeitig konnte man sich dann irgendwann auch vorstellen, dass er eigentlich ein richtig fieser Typ ist, so eine Art Soziopat. Den Gedanken kann ich auch immernoch nicht richtig abschütteln bisher. Galadriels ständig sarkastische ironische Art hat mir hingegen ganz gut gefallen. Dieses total abgeklärte „Ich hasse die ganze Welt“ Gehabe fand ich einfach klasse und ich fand sie war auch die einzige Figur, die ein wenig Tiefe bekommen hat. Wie die Welt sie sieht und sie sich selbst sieht, wie sie sein will, das aber nicht kann, weil alle Vorurteile ihr gegenüber haben. Das war wirklich alles richtig gut beschrieben und war am Ende dann auch der Grund, wieso ich das Buch nicht abgebrochen habe. Erst im letzten Drittel nimmt die Story endlich an Fahrt auf und wird am Ende sogar richtig interessant. Der Cliffhanger am Ende war zu erwarten gewesen, konnte mich aber trotzdem nochmal irgendwie überraschen. Auch die „Liebesszene“ fand ich ganz cool gemacht.

4,25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ At first I had difficulties to get into this world and this book but I did end up really liking it. I really liked that the protagonist is an rather untypical one - kind of grumpy and unlikeable but still you love her. Also I did really like the dynamic between her and Orion. I am looking forward to read the other two books in this series.

5 Sterne Das Buch hat mich wirklich von der ersten Seite an gefesselt. Ich finde das Magiesystem total interessant. Eine Schule bei der nicht mal die Hälfte den Abschluss schafft und das nicht weil der Unterricht so schwer ist. :D Die Art und Weise, wie Mana gesammelt wird und die Mutter der Protagonistin sind sehr interessant. Ich finde die Geschichte hat überraschende Wendungen, interessante Charaktere und ganz besonders einen echt fiesen Cliffhanger.

It was equally rushed as it was slow!? The exciting parts were super fast but till we got there... She had so many thoughts and flashbacks, I mean, important yes, but not when we are following a demon! And I always forgot what we were talking about, because she was thinking for like a hundred pages (more like two to five, but that's still to much)! I liked the chemistry between El and Orion. I had more romantic hopes for them but there just sixteen, so I'm patient.

Ich bin in das Buch reingestolpert und brauchte ein paar Seiten um einzusteigen, aber dann hat das Buch mich in seinen Bann gesogen. Für mich ein Buch das nicht vor den gefährlichen und dunklen Aspekten von Fantasywelten zurückschreckt sondern sie auskostet. Definitiv auch für Erwachsene geeignet und ein etwas anderes herangehen an eine Love interest. Mir hat das Buch auf jeden Fall so sehr gefallen, dass ich mir die restlichen zwei Bücher der Trilogie auch noch gekauft habe.

Am Anfang bin ich GAR NICHT reingekommen, wollte es schon wieder weglegen und hatte mich bereits geärgert, dass ich alle drei Teile gekauft hatte. Ich hab es auf Englisch gelesen und dachte, dass ich es vielleicht deshalb nicht verstehe, aber nachdem ich die Leseprobe auf Deutsch auch nicht verstanden habe, hab ich kapiert, dass man den Inhalt am Anfang einfach nicht wirklich checkt ^^ Ich hab aber weitergelesen und war irgendwann drin, so ca nach ⅓ des Buches und es hat mir dann auch echt gut gefallen! Freu mich schon auf den zweiten Teil!

Quite fun to read - The MC is actually one of the most sarcastic charachters ever. She was really enjoyable even though she annoied the hll out of me sometimes (SPOLIER: like I get it, you're the nerd. You don't have friends. It's okay. Get over it already) But after a long ass intro with worldbuiolding it took a lot of action in and was so so so fun! Can't wait for book 2.

DNF at 50 % There are definitely things I liked about this book! The humor was one of them - I had to laugh out loud quite often and really enjoyed how cynically funny a few situations were. I also liked the concept of the school, even thought it wasn't described in a way that truly made me able to visualize it. What I didn't like (SPOILERS AHEAD) El, our main character was so frustrating to follow. She didn't have any friends and constantly complained about people not liking her. However, whenever someone was actually nice to her she behaved like the biggest ass to push them away again. Honestly, her whole inner dialogue about people not liking her (that came up almost every few pages) felt so entitled at some point as she could have literally solved that by being a decent human being for once.. grrr! There's one point in the book where we learn about her abandonment issues and trauma from her childhood which might have led to this in some way. But it was still extremely annoying. Another thing I didn't like was how this book was written. It reads kind of like a diary from El. Thus nothing is really explained. For example we learn the names of some monsters but we don't really know how they look like. There's not much visual description that helps to get immersed in the book in my opinion.
