Wonderful book. The more I read it, the more I enjoyed it. It was fascinating to see an interpretation of Nannerl's story and her growing up. A child prodigy herself, she lived in the shadow of her little brother Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart simply because she was a girl, a woman and therefore not "allowed" to compose. "What beautiful creations were lost to us forever, because Nannerl was a woman? How many other countless talents have been silenced by history? Whether for their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic circumstances?" - author's note

Besonders Nannerls Zwiespalt zwischen Eifersucht und Liebe gegenüber ihrem Bruder fand ich so realistisch - ich glaube, dass viele Personen mit Geschwistern sich in diesem Aspekt wiederfinden. This book had me utterly smitten – from the cover to the blurb to the pages and story in between! How is this not featured more frequently? First of all, it is STUNNING. And the cover immediately sets the mood for the dark fairytale you are about to discover in “The Kingdom of Back”. I’ve always been obsessed with music in any form, and I have been particularly fascinated with the Mozart siblings for almost as long. The wonder of W.A. Mozart, a child so young, composing masterpieces, and the wonder of his sisters Nannerl who this story is centered around. I cannot even begin to describe what I love about this book. I think what got me invested in the beginning was the dark and fairytale like atmosphere @marieluthewriter creates in this piece. It enraptured me completely and I dove deeper and deeper into the story that is filled with magic and historical facts! Her writing is easy and sometimes poetic and very vivid (I almost felt like I had travelled to the kingdom of back myself). And oh the plot twists – even though I had a gut feeling the revelation was so much better!! I loved the fact, that even though there was a lot of magic to this, it still felt somewhat historically accurate. And on top of all of this there were some very delicate yet clear tones on feminism, trusting yourself and finding your way in life. I had the best time watching Nannerl and Wolferl grow up, dreaming of the Kingdom of Back, composing their masterpieces, their love for one another as siblings. To follow them along their journey through all of Europe, to the magical realm and back. The relationship between the characters and the characters themselves were extremely well written! Marie Lu had me smiling, giggling and kicking my feet. While crying (in the end) and oh I got SO mad at their father and how he treated Nannerl. How women in general must have been treated back then. How man female artists never got to publish their music, their books, their art. All the feels truly. I can only say thank you for this dark tale about desires, wishes and dangers looming in our minds and hearts. This will for sure be on my favourite list for this year!

Putnam’s Sons Verlag. Es ist ein Imprint von Pinguin Random House. Das Jugendbuch vermischt historische Ereignisse und Figuren mit Fantasy- Elemente.In „The Kingdom of Back“ geht es um die Mozart Geschwister. Während für viele Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ein geläufiger Name ist und seine Stücke heute noch gespielt werden, ist recht wenig über seine ältere Schwester Marie Anna bekannt. Genau wie ihr Bruder wurde sie mit einer Gabe für Musik geboren und ihr einziger Wunsch ist es für immer in Erinnerung zu bleiben. Im 18. Jahrhundert verzaubern die Kinder die Handelsklasse und Adel Mitteleuropas. Lu war genauso überrascht wie ich zu erfahren, dass Wolfgang Mozart eine Schwester hatte. Da Frauen in der damaligen Zeit wenig Anerkennung geschenkt und deshalb ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass die Geschichte sie vergessen hat.„The Kingdom of Back“ war ein reiner Cover Kauf von mir. Die Illustration ist sehr detailreich und greift viele Elemente aus der Geschichte auf. Durch die Farbgebung ist es mir sofort auf Instagram als auch im Buchladen aufgefallen.Obwohl Lu die Geschichte bereits vor 12 Jahren geschrieben hat, konnte ich beim Lesen einfach nicht das Gefühl abschütteln, dass mir die Mischung aus Realität und Fantasy bekannt vorkam. Es erinnerte mich an „Wintersong“ von S. Jae- Jones.Im Gegensatz zu „Wintersong“ kam ich in die Handlung von „The Kingdom of Back“ einfach nicht rein. Zusätzlich entwickelte sich die Geschichte sehr langsam. Es lag nicht an den historischen Aspekt; über Marie Annas Wünsche und Träume zu lesen und wie Aussichtslos diese waren, las sich sehr spannend. Der Fantasy Teil war langweilig. Besonders da der Sinn der Aufgaben, die Marie Anna im The Kingdom of Back erfüllen sollte, keinen Sin ergaben.

This isn´t my first historical fiction and not my first Marie Lu book, so I am finding it hard to really find an explanation as to why I simply cannot get through this book. I will try it though. The writing was fine but sometimes way too flowery. And I really, truly do not need five descriptions of this magical dude in not even thirty pages. We get it, he´s pale and glowey. I like Nannerl as a human being and she was my main reason to read this. I find it fascinating and tragic that her skill was ignored simply because she was a woman and I was interested to see the rise of Wolfgang through her eyes, especially her conflicting feelings. But it was hard to get invested because I felt like the book jumped around too much in some places. I´m German and reading all these German words were jarring. I appreciate Marie Lu´s attempt but please, if you write in other languages, google the meaning of the words. Herr and Fräulein aren´t titles, they literally just mean Mister and Young Lady. Reading it felt like someone writing a latinx character and having them say "Hola" every two sentences. All in all, I found myself skipping paragraphs and letting myself get distracted a lot, which I didn´t have when reading Cinderella is Dead just two days before. I only have one and a half weeks left of my vacation, so I didn´t want to drag this one out and not get to the S&B trilogy. Maybe if I manage the trilogy before the end of my vacation, I will try it again. I really want to like this book and I´m so sad I didn´t so far.
