wow!! Ich habe dieses Buch verschlungen, es war total interessant und spannend. Schon allein der Titel hat mich total angesprochen, da ich sofort an den Richter gedacht habe, der Ted Bundy als “Bright young man” bezeichnet hat. Es ist so toll zu sehen, dass Jessica Knoll die Geschichte mit einem Fokus auf die starken, strahlenden Frauen geschrieben hat. In diesem Buch sieht man, wie die Opfer ihr eigenen Wert wiederfinden und von ihrem Trauma heilen. Es war definitiv ein Highlight von diesem Jahr und ich würde es jedem empfehlen. Ob true-crime Fan oder einfach nur Romane liebhaber.

Bright Young Women von Jessica Knoll [Ü: Jasmin Humburg] Bright Young Women erzählt die Geschichten der Opfer von Ted Bundy, basierend auf wahren Begebenheiten. Das Buch wurde mit Unterstützung von Kathy Kleiner verfasst, einer echten Überlebenden. Im Mittelpunkt der Story steht Pamela, die Leiterin eines Verbindungshauses der Florida State University, und die schrecklichen Ereignisse vom Januar 1978. Gleichzeitig begleiten wir Tina, deren Geschichte etwas früher beginnt. Tinas Freundin Ruth wurde vor einiger Zeit vermisst gemeldet und seitdem nicht gefunden. Tina sieht bei den Verbrechen und dem Verschwinden ihrer Freundin einen Zusammenhang und versucht die Lage aufzudecken. Das Buch springt zwischen den Jahren 1976 und 2021 hin und her, aus der Sicht von Pamela und Ruth. Was mir besonders zugesagt hat, ist der Aspekt „female rage” – die Wut der Frauen, mit der sie auf die brutalen Geschehnisse und das Versagen des (Rechts-)Systems reagieren. Tina geht dabei unglaublich stark mit allem um, was ihr widerfährt und spricht ihre Emotionen laut aus und möchte, dass andere Frauen auch laut sind. Erschreckend ist auch, dass Pamela sich auf keinen Mann (außer ihren Vater) verlassen konnte. Bright Young Women ist spannend, wütend und emotional aufwühlend. Es ist mehr als nur eine Erzählung über Verbrechen – es zeigt auf, wie tiefgreifend Frauen vom System enttäuscht wurden, und das macht die Geschichte so packend und wichtig. Zum Schluss hatte ich einfach nur Gänsehaut.

Der Thriller beruht auf einer wahren Begebenheit - den Serienkiller Ted Bundy aus den 70er Jahren. Es hat mich ab der ersten Seite gepackt und mich nicht mehr losgelassen. Dabei erzeugt das Buch eine Achterbahn der Gefühle: Wut über die Taten des Täters und die Fehler der Polizei, Trauer über das Leid der Opfer und Bewunderung für den Mut der Uberlebenden. Auch wenn es zwischendurch etwas zäh war, kann ich das Buch wegen der wichtigen Thematik, die immer noch aktuell ist, sehr empfehlen.

Como una ávida consumidora del crimen real, siempre me ha molestado mucho que pinten a los asesinos como personas sumamente inteligentes, calculadoras y poseedoras de un intelecto o capacidades fuera de lo común. Es cierto que los asesinos se forman por vivir infancias precarias y dolorosas, y que muchas de estas personas no tenían porque crecer de la manera en la que lo hicieron, aún así, esto NUNCA justifica las acciones violentas que los llevaron a cometer. Leyendo este libro me enfurece comprobar que las mujeres siempre han sido vistas por estos monstruos como las merecedoras de su furia, de su venganza y de su odio hacia quien les hizo daño. Siento que necesitaba mucho este libro porque estoy harta de que estos asesinos sean venerados como héroes, como gente importante o famosa, cuando solamente son inadaptados, perdedores y hombres tan TAN pequeños que no merecen ni siquiera ser recordados o nombrados. Este libro me recordó y me expuso que aunque hayas sido la que vio con tus propios ojos al asesino, la ley nunca va a estar de tu lado porque las mujeres siempre seremos las locas, las histéricas, las que por relacionarse románticamente con un hombre, un abuso ya es algo justificado. Siempre me interesó el crimen real no por alzar a estos hombres idiotas, sino por saber y conocer como una persona puede llegar hasta el punto más inhumano para obtener paz mental con venganza. Pero creo que lo que importa es la parte de las victimas, no solamente las que ya nunca pueden contarnos su parte de la historia, sino las que también fueron victimas colaterales y tienen que recordar todos los días, en cualquier situación, -tomando un café, paseando por un parque, escuchando una canción- a la persona que les quitaron.

Admittedly, I don’t like true crime. I don’t understand the fascination to read or hear about the details of abhorrent crimes that humans inflict on one another in real life and I especially struggle with some people calling themselves “fans” of Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy or any other of those individuals. For that reason, I have started getting into fiction that deals with the genre of true crime in a critical way (such as Eliza Clark’s “Penance”) or chooses a different approach. “Brilliant young women” does exactly that: The story is told from the perspective of three different women: Pamela, president of a sorority recently victimised by an attacker that left several girls dead or severely injured; Tina, who tries to prove that her friend was another victim of a certain serial murderer and longs to find out what happened to her; and Ruth, a young woman finding her place in the world. There are clear parallels to Ted Bundy’s crimes with regard to the timeline, locations, victims, circumstances and physical appearance. However, Jessica Knoll decides to not even allocate a name to the perpretator. Throughout the book, he is referred to as “The Defendant” and - unlike the media did at the time - described as the self-absorbed, pitiful and small human being that he was. Instead, she is placing the focus on the lives, thoughts and dreams of the victims and their friends dealing with the loss of a loved one. Knoll describes Pamela’s and Tina’s fight for justice for their friends while also shining light on the lives of the survivors after the attacks as well as hinting on the futures those brilliant young women might have had if they had not been torn out of life violently. I found all three narrators relatable in one way or the other but I especially looked forward to Ruth’s chapters and her development from an insecure wallflower submitting to her mother’s expectations to a confident woman striving to achieve the life she wants for herself. Would recommend!

This was magnificent. One of my most favorite reads this year, at the same time turning my insides out at parts. Coincidentally reading this after „Penance“ was actually super interesting. I really liked the writing style of this work, the chapters worked great, it managed to keep the tension rather high but not to an uncomfortable level. Don’t have a single thing to nitpick about rn so it is a 5 star read
