This was amazing!to me what was actually the best thing about this whole book are the characters, the set up and obviously the writing style! I enjoyed this world and the characters immensely. It was just so nice spending time with them & thanks to the writing stile - reading this book felt just natural and effortless. Like this book was meant to be read by me. It was great & exactly what I needed. Probably the perfect book to get yourself out of a reading slump. and I think I can now comfortably say that I am excited to read everything V.E. Schwab has ever written & will ever write - simply because she writes so beautiful, so easy, so lovely to read and get immersed in the story. The reason I'm still giving this book "just" 3 stars is the fact that, to me, the plot moved too easy. There were no real complications, everything worked out and if not then Sydney could fix it in a matter of seconds. I was never scared (except for Mitch getting killed and leaving us) because I just knew it would work out, I never what was gonna happen next because it just.. felt so obvious. I do hope that the second book in the series will be a bit more.. complicated, dangerous, nerve wrecking, .. and all the things that make me stay up all night to keep reading. If not I'm still gonna love it anyway lol.

mhmm it was actually pretty good but i kind if expected more? the plot and the structure, and the writing in general, were excellent, but i struggled with this story after the first half. maybe it was my personal life or my new tv obsession getting in the way, or maybe it was that i couldn‘t fully connect with the characters. i don‘t know! the ending was cool, too, but it made the whole first book seem like a set-up for the next one. another aspect i enjoyed a lot was the aesthetic of vicious. the reading experience was almost cinematic. think their meeting in the rain and sydney‘s red coat, the dog and victor‘s cold eyes etc. very very cool!! not so cool? killing the girlfriend as an inciting incident and later killing the second of three important female side characters... i still want to read more by v. e. schwab now though!!

Dies lag nicht am Thema, denn das erinnerte mich teils an den Film Flatliners, welchen ich damals im Kino gesehen habe , auch die Protas waren für mich wirklich interessant und konnten mich fangen, auch wenn ich die Hauptprotas etwas schwach rübergebracht fand. Probleme hatte ich etwas mit den Zeitsprüngen. Eigentlich mag ich sowas, aber hier gab es alle ein bis zwei Seiten ein neues Kapitel mit Zeitsprung,welcher nicht immer in die selbe Zeit wechselte( gestern, Gegenwart, vor 10 Jahren, vor 3 Tagen, eine Woche vorher...). Dies finde ich etwas häufig und verwirrend.Ansonsten war es eine tolle und spannende Geschichte, der was dunkles anhaftet. Es machte Spass und ist Mal was ganz anderes zum sonstigen Fantasytrott. Wer dunkle Protas und düstere Erlebnisse genauso mag,wie ich ,ist hier richtig, alle anderen sollten lieber was anderes lesen.

V. E. Schwab writing got to me once again and I fell in love with the darkness and broody vibe of this book! Such a morally gray set of characters, such brilliant writing and a story that makes you sit at the edge of your seat for all the 340 pages! Epic and gripping indeed. Would recommend 100%.

"Vicious" ist ein absoluter Pageturner, der mich von Anfang bis Ende komplett in seinen Bann gezogen hat. Der Schreibstil trifft genau den richtigen Ton und die Autorin verwebt geschickt zwischen Kapiteln in der Gegenwart und der Vergangenheit, um die Geschichte langsam und bedacht aufzubauen und dabei die Aufmerksamkeit der Leserschaft nicht zu verlieren. Eine der Stärken der Geschichte liegt darin, wie sich die Beweggründe der Hauptfiguren im Laufe der Geschichte allmählich entfalten. Besonders eindrucksvoll und gut dargestellt sind dabei die Charakterzüge von Eli und Victor, ehemals beste Freunde, die durch ihre "Verwandlung" in "EOs" (ExtraOrdinaries) zu erbitterten Feinden geworden sind. Ihre Entwicklung und die emotionale Tiefe ihrer Beziehung sind absolut faszinierend (bin echt gespannt wie es im zweiten Teil weitergeht). Schwab gelingt es, die Komplexität und Ambivalenz ihrer Charaktere in einer Weise darzustellen, die mich gleichermaßen fasziniert und verstört hat. Diese tiefgehende Rivalität zwischen Eli und Victor sorgt für eine zusätzliche Spannungsebene und trägt maßgeblich zur packenden Atmosphäre des Buches bei. Die Mischung aus Fantasy- und Thrillerelementen ist perfekt umgesetzt, insbesondere in der Darstellung von Nahtoderfahrungen, die den Betroffenen außergewöhnliche Fähigkeiten verleihen, die von einer dunklen und geheimnisvollen Aura umgeben sind. Was mich besonders beeindruckt hat, war die Liebe zum Detail und die gelungene Darstellung, wie die EOs mit ihren neuen Fähigkeiten und dem Fehlen bestimmter Aspekte des normalen menschlichen Lebens umgehen. Diese Erforschung wirft fesselnde Fragen zur Natur ihrer Kräfte und zur Moralität dieser außergewöhnlichen Menschen auf. Ich bin wirklich froh, mich endlich an ein V. E. Schwab Buch gewagt zu haben ^^

Fine, make me your villain. Sorry, I had to take this quote from another book, but it fits quite right lol Victor and Eli were roomates in college and got along pretty well. Victor had a slight obsession with Eli, it seems. He wanted to explore the depths of him, as he was sure there was a dark side hiding within him. The world it is set in is pretty much our real world, only that there are so called EOs. ExtraOrdinarys are people who have special supernatural abilities and no one seems to know where they come from. Eli and Victor wanted to uncover exactly that and established theories on how to become an EO. They did some experiments, dangerous life-threatening experiments and were successful. But Eli could not acccept the fact that EOs are human. He made it his job to hunt down EOs and eliminate them... in the name of god. Eli is the reason Victor was in prison for a long time. After Victor got out he had only one goal: finding Eli and taking revenge. The concept of this story is really interesting. Two friends who want to solve a mystery, getting trapped in it and becoming enemies because of it. I like Victor very much, Eli.. not so much. Eli is a self-righteous ass who thinks he is The One, chosen from god, to act in his faith. However, be prepared for a lot of time skips in this book. We skip from 10 years ago, when Victor and Eli were in college, to the present where Victor hunts Eli and Eli hunts EOs. It was confusing sometimes, but only a little. Some time skips were unnecessary in my opinion, like the throwbacks of Serena and Eli.. I am not interested in their relationship at all. Both suck, so it was a little annoying. But aside from that I liked the story and I look forward to reading book two.

The story really fascinated me! Like Mitch says in the book: "there are no good men". And this is true and so - refreshing. Also I liked the writing style (it was light but not too simple). (I only give 4 stars very rarely and almost never 5.. So 3 stars doesn't mean "meeh okay" but rather that I really genuinly liked it! It's just not in my Top-List)

The more I read of V.E. Schwab the more I feel like she just isn’t my author.. I mean yes it was an entertaining read but I wouldn’t recommend it to my bestie which is my dead tell if I liked the book or not. It’s not an awful book. Don’t get me wrong. It’s well written and an interesting story with very deep characters. But it just wasn’t for me.

Oh dear, I absolutely loved everything about this book from beginning to end. The plot was very gripping. V.E. Schwab made sure of that with the short chapters and only slowly revealing what happened with different characters and in different timelines. Ok, and we also really have to talk about the characters. They were all really morally grey and you just couldn‘t place them in any categories. I, as the reader, had to decide what to make out of all the characters, which I personally really liked. It made reading this book really engaging for me. I am just glad that I gave V.E.Schwab another chance, because I really enjoyed this book!

Einfach unglaublich gut. Und wieder einmal danke ich meinem Vergangenheits-Ich, dass ich immer die komplette Reihe kaufe, denn dann kann ich gleich direkt weiterlesen. Ich liebe Victor und Sydney, ich hasse Eli. Und ich weiß noch nicht ganz, was ich von Serena halten soll. Aber ich glaube ich hasse auch sie. Die Geschichte ist total cool gemacht, man hat einen richtig düsteren vibe beim Lesen.

Besonders positiv ist mir sofort die Atmosphäre aufgefallen, die in diesem Buch geschaffen wird. Die Autorin wählt genau die richtigen Wörter, sodass die gesamte Handlung sehr düster und mysteriös wirkt. Des weiteren ist der Schreibstil wirklich sehr angenehm zu lesen. Zu Beginn haben mich die vielen Zeitsprünge etwas verwirrt, weshalb ich etwas länger gebraucht habe, um in der Geschichte anzukommen. Als ich dann jedoch drinnen war, wollte ich garnicht mehr aufhören zu lesen. Die Zeitsprünge wurden an den perfekten Momenten gewählt, wodurch sehr viel Spannung erzeugt wird und man das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen will. Auch die Charaktere waren wirklich toll ausgearbeitet. Alles wirkte sehr authentisch und einfach nur stimmig. Man wusste garnicht, ob man jetzt zu Team Victor oder zu Team Eli gehört, da beide Dinge tun, die falsch sind und man dennoch beide irgendwie nachvollziehen kann. Victor ist ehrgeizig, aber auch sehr sturr und begeht viele Fehler. Allerdings merkt man auch, dass ihm Personen schnell ans Herz wachsen und er auch eine liebevolle Seite hat. Eli macht mindestens genau so viele Fehler wie Victor und ist sehr von seiner „Bestimmung“ überzeugt. Er ist sehr clever, wodurch man manchmal erst auf dem 2. Blick sieht, wie verrückt er eigentlich ist. Als Leser hat man es also wirklich nicht leicht eine Seite zu wählen. Auch die Nebencharaktere werden erfolgreich in die Geschichte integriert. Jeder war (nicht nur aufgrund seines Talents/seiner Gabe) einzigartig und hatte seine eigenen Fehler und seine eigene Vergangenheit. Zu der Handlung möchte ich garnicht mehr so viel sagen, da ich keines Falls spoilern möchte. Wie schon gesagt konnte mich das Buch unterhalten, schockieren und total positiv überraschen. Das Ende war wirklich gemein und ich freue mich schon sehr auf Band 2. Fazit Ein spannendes und abgedrehtes Fantasybuch mit zwei Antihelden, Geheimnissen und vielen Intrigen. Dieses Buch hält viele Wendungen bereit und ist für mich ein absolutes Jahreshighlight. Es hat einfach alles gestimmt und ich kann es kaum abwarten, endlich Band 2 zu lesen. Das Buch bekommt von mir 5 Sterne.

Another waste of my life time. The story lost its appeal for me in the first chapter, as it sort of spoils the end. Don't get me wrong, the story is very interesting. But the fact that the events aren't chronological and you jump right through the past and the present is really uncomfortable.

First of all, TW for suicide and violence, obviously. Now, if you are within the first 60 pages of this book and you think of discarding it, because you feel it is too brilliant-emo-teen-angsty and the love triangle is predictable, I am begging you to give this book until page 111. This book reminded me of the TV Show “The OA” with a more comic-book feel about it. Think of Magneto and Dr.Xavier but way more cruel. A cat-and-mouse thing that reminded me of L and Light from Death Note.The main characters are not sympathetic and they are not meant to be. There are other people you will start to like and begin to value along the way that will make this stir impactful to read. The characters are well-written never the less and the premise of the story was intriguing.The way the timeline is set up was interesting and made things more tense while reading, although the jumps came at a high frequency that in the middle chapters, annoyed me and made me stop reading in between. All in all this book is very good! I am looking forward to part two and see how some characters will hopefully gain more spotlight and agency.

Am Anfang war ich nicht besonders überzeugt da die ganzen Sprünge durch unterschiedliche Zeiten in der Geschichte sich noch nicht richtig zusammenfügten.. Dies änderte sich allerdings nach und nach. Irgendwann merkte ich wie ich letztendlich mitgerissen wurde und wirklich Spaß beim lesen hatte. Die Hauptcharaktere Victor der Soziopath und Eli der Narzisst sind beide nicht die üblichen Protagonisten und das macht sie so interessant.
