Actual Rating: 3.5 stars Well I liked it, there wasn't much happening plot-wise so I guess you could call it character-driven. But they were both a bit young for my liking and to be honest if you would change the names it could actually be a slow build fanfic of any gay ship that ever existed (But since I like those it didn't bother me too much).

Mein erster Re-read und ich habe es nicht bereut. Ich wollte einfach mal mein Gedächtnis auffrischen, um den zweiten Teil besser nachvollziehen zu können und ich liebte es, wie beim ersten Lesen. Die Atmosphäre wurde perfekt getroffen und ich mag einfach den Vibe. Die Beschreibung des Schauplatzes und der verschiedenen Wetterlagen waren super stimmig. Ari, Dante und deren Eltern waren mir wirklich sympathisch. Die Liebesgeschichte hat sich zwar etwas gezogen, aber bei der Story passt dieser Slowburn. Das Buch war spannend, aber zugleich sehr cozy zu lesen. Hat mich oft zum Denken angeregt. Kann ich nur empfehlen!!! 🫶🏻

This is a tough one to rate. Because I honestly don't know how I feel about this. The quotes in this book are stellar, but the story didn't really move me. I did enjoy it, but I couldn't connect to the characters. I don't know what it was. I guess I wasn't in the right headspace to read this or something. I know what the book tried to be, but it didn't do it for me. Like the story felt shallow to me even though it touched really heavy topics. I really need to read this again when I am in the mood for more poetic books. Now that I know what to expect, maybe I'll enjoy it more. A lot of people love this book and I can see why, but it just wasn't as meaningful to me. I really wish it was, tho. I just felt confused at times, and the story isn't even complicated. It wasn't bad, just not for me. It is easy to read, really quotable and a nice storyline *SPOILER; LIKE BIG SPOILER* Just wanted to say and ask if for others it felt like the romance was forced. Like Ari's dad tells him that he loves Dante, and he is just like "No.... Oh wait, actually yeah I love him, let's gooo" Like, I saw it coming, because it was really set-up that way. But I didn't see the change in Ari from being friends to loving Dante. Just didn't feel the chemistry

Is just wonderful,I love it in so many ways, Ari in some way was like me so was Dante. I'm so glad of being able to read this book, you know some books just appear when you need them, this was that book it make me think about so many things around my life,in the changes/phases maybe in this time of my life I was in the ecotone healing and hurting. The end was really special it was something I think about it with some quotes or just come to my mind. I just hope that a lot of people in this world read the book it's just a good experiencie to be open mindend and change the world correct code. I originally had bought this book because people on tiktok said it had a similar vibe to “the song of Achilles”. However, I have to disagree. For me, the story of Ari and Dante, which started as a close and very cute friendship (or one sided love), was nice to read, but didn’t really catch me due to its missing depth. I think if I had read this book at the age of 14/15 (I’m 17 now) I would’ve loved it to the bottom of my heart, but reading it at my current age, some things just seem a bit unrealistic to me. Firstly, the accident of Ari saving Dante’s life was kinda random and out of context but still comprehensible. Also Dante leaving right after Ari’s stay in the hospital was quite random as well like, why do you leave when he needs you the most and then for 9 months? Anyway, also Dante’s rips getting broken and Ari taking revenge for it, was meant in a cute and protective way, however I found it quite weird that one of them is always hurt in some way or in the hospital (sorry it was just kinda annoying to me). Then another small thing that drove me insane was Ari just “realizing” he likes Dante when his parents tell him he loves him. Idk it felt so weird to me that they had to tell him that, like yes, he might be in denial but doesn’t one notice/realize it that themselves? Maybe I’m being way too critical right now (sorry to anyone loving this book) but also the portrayal of the parents felt too utopian in many conversations. I know some parents might be that caring and loving but just the way they talked with Ari seemed rather like a “dream” conversation as a realistic one to me. After criticizing so much of it now, I still wanna add that the (kinda rushed) ending was really sweet, although it took him like forever to make up his mind and feelings. Even tho the utopian vibe made it seem unrealistic sometimes, I liked the way it made one feel comfortable and sometimes even understood trough the relatability of the characters. All in all 3,5/5 stars, would recommend for a cute read. (Although it put me into a reading slump ;) )

Ich lese eigentlich nicht so häufig englische Bücher, aber hab es trotzdem sehr gut verstanden:). Die Sprache ist leicht zu verstehen, aber trotzdem irgendwie poetisch und sehr emotional. Ich musste zwischendurch ein bisschen weinen 🥹. Und dann hab ich wiede dieses Buch angestrahlt, weil ich Ari und Dante so süß fand. Eigentlich wollte ich diesen Monat keine Bücher mehr kaufen, aber ich will unbedingt den zweiten Band lesen 🤧. Empfehlung 🤞❤️❤️.

Es ist wirklich ein tolles Buch. Das Buch spielt in den 1980igern und gemeinsam begleiten wir Ari und Dante auf dem Weg ihrer Selbstfindung. Ich mochte das Buch wirklich sehr und die Atmosphäre hat mir sehr sehr sehr gefallen. Ich habe das Buch auf Englisch gelesen und der Schreibstil war wirklich sehr angenehm.

I loved this book... I could relate so good to Ari .. I love how u can rlly feel what is going on in Ari's mind. Love the writing style... it was really easy to understand and get into... it's so cute and related to the real life...Sometimes I totally forgot that I was even reading a book... definitely recommend

Ari und Dante lernen sich in einem Sommer kennen. Da Ari nicht schwimmen kann, bringt Dante es ihm bei. Ari ist sehr zurückgezogen und meistens für sich, während Dante viel offener ist. Obwohl beide sehr unterschiedlich sind, werden sie schnell Freunde und verbringen fast jeden Tag miteinander. In dem Buch geht es aber nicht nur um die Freundschaft, sondern auch um die Probleme die die beiden haben, und wie sie sich mit diesen Problemen auseinander setzen. Dante mochte ich sehr. Er wurde super süß beschrieben. Mit Ari konnte ich aber einfach nicht warm werden. Ich habe viele seiner Handlungen nicht nachvollziehen können. Manchmal fand ich ihn auch einfach nervig. Die Freundschaft zwischen Dante und Ari mochte ich aber dafür besonders sehr. Aber ich denke, dass liegt auch nur daran, weil ich eben den Charakter Dante so mochte. Gerade den letzten Teil des Buches mochte ich sehr. Doch den Anfang fand ich sehr zäh. Was mich persönlich auch noch gestört hat war, dass das Buch fast nur aus Dialogen besteht. Meistens sind die Dialoge auch noch sehr lang. Diese hätten aber durchaus gekürzt werden können... Und meistens haben diese sich auch noch wiederholt. Deswegen war es auch ein bisschen anstrengend gewisse Kapitel zu lesen.

Ich muss sagen, dass mir der Anfang des Buches nicht ganz zugesagt hat, aber um so weiter ich gelesen habe, desto fesselnder war die Geschichte. Der Hauptcharakter erschien mir am Anfang wie eine Person, in die man sich im laufe des Buches nicht weiter einfühlen könnte, aber genau das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Die Entwicklung und Selbstfindung der beiden ist toll mitzuverfolgen und man bekommt immer mehr Einblicke. Ich mochte vor allem den Schreibstil, da in vielen Momenten wenige Worte gereicht haben, um genau diese Gefühle der Charaktere zu verdeutlichen.

Ein ganz besonderes Buch, dass eigentlich so gar nicht dem entspricht, was ich sonst lese, aber es hat mir gut gefallen. Der Schreibstil ist einzigartig, aber einfach zu verstehen. Die Charaktere haben tiefe und sind nachfüllbar. Hab es sehr gern gelesen und freue mich auf den zweiten Teil!

It was an easy read, one you could indulge in while taking a short trip and wanting something to read. I liked how relatable Aristotle was written, especially for the teens that might feel just as conflicted as he does over the course of the story. It's a nice story, and I like that the consequences of homophobia are portrayed. Now, onto the reasoning why my rating isn't higher: I personally felt as though the story was written too dialogue-heavy. Granted, in this case, it might make sense, but it isn't my personal cup of tea. The sentences, for my liking, were too short. Then again, this could *also* make sense, and represent how Aristotle perceives himself most of the time. It could be written in some other way, however. I also wish that some things were more elaborated on. Now, these aren't necessarily the problems that make the book unreadable to me, no. I finished the book and was satisfied with the conclusion, but I just think those things aren't my cup of tea. These 'issues' aren't necessarily criticism for the author, or anything, I think he did a lovely job, it just isn't something I would re-read again. TL;DR: Good coming-of-age story, but it just wasn't my favorite.

Ein Buch über das Erwachsenwerden mit einem gewissen "Twist". Ich weiß nicht. Ich bin dafür ganz offensichtlich die falsche Zielgruppe, denn mir gingen die beiden melancholisch-depressiven Jungs und ihre vorbildlich verständnisvollen Eltern etwas auf den Keks. Alle sind so schrecklich einsichtig, vernünftig, kämpfen (und gewinnen) gegen innere Dämonen - wenn das Leben nur immer so einfach wäre für Teenager... Ich finde den Roman zu "gekünstelt", unrealistisch, aber wenigstens sprachlich gelungen, daher auch 3 Sterne statt 2.

Benjamin Alire Sáenz erzählt die Geschichte des jungen Ari Mitte der 80er Jahre in einer mexikanischen Nachbarschaft außerhalb von LA. Ari ist ganz normal, sehr still und sehr langweilig: er liebt allein sein und hat keine Freunde - jedenfalls bis er Dante trifft. Dante ist das Gegenteil von ihm, ausgelassen, emotional und talentiert. Gegen alle Widrigkeiten verbindet die beiden Freundschaft und Schmerz und vielleicht sogar noch etwas mehr. Und beides lässt sie über Jahre des Einander-Umkreisens nicht mehr los. Ein gutes Jugendbuch ist ein Buch, das nicht nur Jugendliche lesen können und wollen. So ähnlich hat CS Lewis das mal gesagt. Und auf Ari und Dante’s Geschichte lässt sich das perfekt anwenden. Ich habe selten eine natürlicher wirkende Coming of Age Geschichte gelesen. Ja, es gibt keine Handlung in dem Sinne, dass sie sich auf einen konkreten Punkt zu entwickelt. Aber das ist auch gar nicht nötig. Ari gewinnt das Herz des Lesers mit kleinen und großen Fragen, mit verworrenen und komplizierten Gefühlen, mit der Atmosphäre der verlorenen idyllischen Sommer, mit Nostalgie, Lächeln und Tränen: Eben mit den Geheimnissen des Universums.

My expectations weren‘t that high when I started reading this book. I thought what I‘ll get is a cute coming-of-age-story about what it means to grow up as a queer teenager. What I really got was a heartwarming story that made me both laughing out loud and thinking about being a person. I just fell in love with Dante and Ari. The way the book describes the relationship between those boys, their love for each other and their coming out is not just sweet but also realistic and shows the obstacles people have to face when they don‘t fit in society‘s strange and restrictive rules.

Easily one of my favorite books of all time. Been almost a year since I read it, but I still remember everything about it. The way Ari talks about life has something so beautiful about it. This kind of felt like reading a poem, even though I can’t really track down where this feeling is coming from.

update after reread: i thought this was one of these books that i rated way to high when i first read them but i was wrong. this book is still one of the best books i’ve ever read and i hold ari and dante so close to my heart. i can simply not wait any longer to watch the movie, it needs to come out in europe asap. everything else i said in my old review remains true. I have read many books in my life but this one will from now on have a special place in my heart. This book is beautifully written and it’s a story with characters that are SO relatable even if you are not a part of the queer community. Aristotles loneliness and the way he is feeling like there is no place for him in this universe is so relatable and a representation of how so many characters and even adults feel. The love story in this book is a heartwarming friends-to-lovers slow burn that is totally worth the read. I devoured this book in one sitting, and I’m only going to say this once. Read this book! Handlung: Aristotle hat keine Freunde, was für ihn jedoch okay ist, denn lieber möchte er herausfinden warum sein Bruder im Gefängnis sitzt und warum seine Eltern das totschweigen. Dante ist ein wirklich intelligenter Junge und ist sehr gut darin schnell Freunde zu machen. Als die beiden sich im Schwimmbad begegnen und Dante Aristotele beibringt zu schwimmen, entwickelt sich zwischen den Beiden eine unglaubliche Freundschaft, obwohl sie doch so verschieden sind. Zusammen versuchen sie die Wahrheit über sich selbst herauszufinden. Charaktere: Aristotle ist seit Seite eins so relatable gewesen. Er spricht einfach direkt aus was wir wohl alle denken und versucht herauszufinden was das Leben für ihn bereithält. Manchmal ist er auch so frech direkt, dass ich einfach nur lachen musste. Er macht sich leider aber kleiner als er eigentlich ist. Er ist wirklich wundervoll, aber scheint es nicht zu wissen. Alleine dass er so einen unglaublichen Gerechtigkeitssinn hat, macht ihn zu einem guten Menschen. Dante konnte ich einfach nur ins Herz schließen. Er ist so niedlich und obwohl er und Aristotle unterschiedlich sind, verbindet sie eine perfekte Freundschaft. Aris Mutter habe ich schon von Anfang an als eine starke und inspirierende Frau empfunden. Als ich später dann erfahren habe was sie alles durchmachen musste, hat sich meine Empfindung definitiv bestätigt. Spannung: Zu Anfang konnte ich nicht wirklich was mit der Geschichte anfangen, weil ich den Plot und wohin das alles führen soll nicht verstanden habe. Wäre ich ein Mensch, der Bücher abbricht, dann hätte ich das vermutlich gemacht. ABER gut, dass ich es nicht getan habe! Irgendwann, so nach 170 Seiten, wurde es endlich interessant und langsam habe ich verstanden, dass es darum einfach geht. Das ist das Leben. Die Geschichte hat mir das Herz gebrochen und mich zum Weinen gebracht, aber mich letztendlich wieder geheilt. Schreibstil: Ich habe das Buch auf Englisch gelesen und dafür war es wirklich gut zu lesen und zu verstehen. An der ein oder anderen Stelle hat es sich etwas gezogen, aber es ging. Cover: Das Cover finde ich wirklich schön. Ich kann nicht beschreiben, wie unglaublich passend ich es einfach finde. Fazit: Ich gebe dem Buch 4/5 Sterne. Nach meinen anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten hat mir die Geschichte am Ende doch echt gut gefallen. Es war herzzereißend und hat mich zum Weinen gebracht, aber letztendlich hat es mein Herz wieder zusammengesetzt. Auf jeden Fall eine Leseempfehlung meinerseits! Und ich denke, dass sich dieses Buch wirklich gut als Schullektüre eigenen würde.

Ich liebe Ari und ich liebe Dante und ich liebe das poetische an diesem Buch. (Allerdings finde ich, dass der Autor nicht wirklich gut mit dem umgegangen ist, was der Bruder getan hat. !Spoiler ig: Es wurde irgendwie verharmlost, wie unfassbar transphob und nicht in Ordnung das war, was Bernado getan hat...)
