This is probably the biggest disappointment in a very long time. I loved The Raven Cycle and was so looking forward to Ronan's spinoff series. But I did not care a single bit about this story and these new characters introduced. The book actually started out rather well and I especially really enjoyed the writing but as the book went on, it just didn't go anywhere. This story just kept going on and on and on and NOTHING happened. At some point, I wasn't able to tell anymore whether something of importance just happened or it was just another dream/passage of flowery writing. I didn't even bother finishing the last 50 pages since I have zero interest in reading the sequels. Picking up this book may have gotten me in the mood to sleep myself, but this was a complete miss.

The Raven Cycle has often been described to me as having "no plot, just vibes", but having gone back to this world for "Call down the Hawk", I think that is wrong. These books have a thousand little plots instead. "Call Down the Hawk" follows three main character groups: The brothers lynch. Ronan, the dreamer, searching for a way to live with this ability and a way to keep dreams alive past the death of their dreamer. Matthew, the dream, who doesn't yet know that Ronan dreamt him, and who's losing his grip on reality as a consequence. Declan, the oldest, who gives up his own wants and desires to protect his brothers and keep what they are secret. Jordan Hennessy. Hennessy and Jordan. A girl split in two (or twelve). Hennessy can't dream without bringing back a copy of herself and she's (literally) sick of it. If she dies, her clones will fall asleep forever too, so she's trying to find a way to save herself to save them. Jordan is the oldest copy and although dreams can't dream, she dreams of a life independent of Hennessy, where they can live as two girls instead of as one. Carmen Farooq-Lane and the Visionaries and Moderators. Carmen's brother was a dreamer and a killer, and since helping to eliminate him, she's trying to prove to the Moderators, an organization aiming to kill all dreamers, that she wasn't complicit in his crimes. This she does by traveling with and taking care of a young Visionary, a boy who has visions that lead them to dreamers, other Visionaries, and the end of the world – but that will also kill him. She struggles with reconciling the crimes of her brother with the crimes of the Moderators. The beginning felt a little too slow for my taste, with my interest mostly being on Ronan and his brothers, as they are the characters one knows and loves from the Raven Cycle. Still, Jordan and Hennessy fascinated me as soon as their situation became clear, but I struggled a lot longer to get interested in Carmen's POV, except for it being a reminder of a danger to Ronan and Hennessy that they are unaware of. Once the characters' storylines started to overlap even vaguely, it became very easy to read, though. At the end of the Raven Cycle, there was still so much to explore and learn about what it means to be a dreamer in this world, as well as what it means to be a person dreamt up by one of them, and it's been fascinating to dig into that. I can't wait to continue this series, and I desperately hope for a happy ending for all of them.

hi, yes, i've read it now, and i absolutely loved it. this book was everything i'd wanted it to be, and possibly more! i think it's was brilliant and i'm going to try and explain why. IT'S FUN. i had such a good time reading it. this book is character focused but also quite fast-paced, there are car races, there's witty dialogue, there's heist moves, all the good page-turner stuff. the plot is twistier than in the raven cycle; there were turning points that surprised me at every corner. IT'S WELL-WRITTEN. ok so i know how many people feel about maggie stiefvater and i do agree with the critique. but i think what we all agree on is that she. can. WRITE. she KNOWS what she's doing! my biggest fear was probably that this new series would feel unnecessary. the whole story was in the raven cycle already, wasn't it? and it was, in a way. reading cdth though, i realised how much there was still to learn about ronan, about declan, about the whole family and the whole 'dreamer'-world! i completely understand why she wrote this book and it makes sense. writing-style wise, this book was a bit more mature but also a little less poetic, which imo fit the different plot and characters; it was a bit funnier and more casual but still had what i love about maggie's writing. I LOVE THE CHARACTERS. at first, i only cared about ronan. then, the other pov-characters grew on me, jordan at first, then carmen as well. and declan is now one of my all time favorite characters, i felt that i could relate to him and i fell in love with him a bit, as i did with the others. of course i'd have loved to see more of the old crew but the scenes/mentions they had were beautiful and i'm okay with how it was done. GOOD THEMES. this book is about creating/being a creator/creativity/meeting other creators, which was so cleverly done and resonated with me a lot! the other topic that was brought in, like, the 'apocalypse', which i thought related to environmental issues and climate change - or maybe that's just my interpretation? it made me think of the tree creatures from trc so maybe that will be continued? - is very up-to-date! MY #1 OTP IS IN THIS BOOK! i guess we all love the idea of adam getting on that motorcycle, driving 8 hours to see ronan, i sure got some emotions about that. oh well....i just love them so much and they deserve all the happiness and they love each other so much, my heart melted a little bit :,,( to sum it up; perfect perfect perfect. more of that please!! two things should be pointed out, i guess: 1. this book is not really ya, in my opinion. almost everyone's 19 or older and we're not dealing with the typical ya-topics. 2. i'd say you should read the raven cycle first!! you'll definitely enjoy this new series more!!

It’s no secret that l love Maggie Stiefvaters writing and that I adore the Raven Cycle, so I was bound to love this one right?! Right! But nonetheless the book and I didn’t click in the way I expected us to. This was largely due to the fact that I couldn’t wait for the right time to start this and thus the reading process was less than ideal. The other problem was that I needed to accept the new tone of the book, find my footing with the new characters. Like Ronan needs to come to terms with a new side of Adam Parrish I needed to come to terms with this new side of the Raven Cycle world. I managed and now that I’ve finished it I can say that I love the book, just in a totally different way than I expected to. Btw. maybe because I’m the oldest myself I always felt a kinship to him, but even while reading the Raven Cycle I knew that Declan is not a jerk face and I’m very happy with what we learned about him in book one of this trilogy.

A story about the Lynch brothers

I don't even know where to start. I was really excited about this trilogy since Ronan is my favorite character from The Raven Cycle, and this is mainly about him and his brothers, but it was a bit disappointing. More at the beginning, though. I thought it would be a crazy dream adventure, not knowing what is real and what not. But there wasn't even that much dreaming (more at the end, which was really nice). I also wasn't confused. I don't know why I so often see reviews (also about TRC) saying it's confusing. Like, what exactly? 😅 I always go out of these books, liking a lot in theory but finding it lacking in practice, in the actual text. Everything about the dreaming I love. The concept is great. My imagination is wild with ideas. I just think there could be so much more done with it, and maybe it will be. I am still hopeful for the next two books. Otherwise, the story had me bored a lot in the beginning, or more like not interested, not engaged. I generally like multiple POV, but it depends on how it's done. Here, it's not in first person, but we switch between different (groups of) people. Most of the time, after just one or two chapters. So if a chapter about one person ends super exciting and you want to know what happens to them next, well, you have to fight through a chapter about somebody else first 🙃 We have around 4 POV groups. Ronan and everything around him, Declan (sometimes in combination with Ronan or Matthew), Hennessey and/or Jordan, and the Moderators, namely Farooq-Lane and Parsifal. I didn't care for the Moderators. Besides being "the bad guys," killing all the dreamers, I was just kinda bored by their chapters and annoyed at the characters, well, mainly Farooq-Lane. I know she is a victim of the circumstances, and I can see her character changing, but I still didn't like her (especially after the old Zed incident. Could totally understand Parsifal). Most of the book was just really slow. I guess that's just the style of the author. It took a long time until the different characters even met, and that was the point at which it finally got interesting for me. I still love Ronan, and Hennessey and Jordan are interesting new characters. I am also interested in finally finding out more about Bryde. (slight spoilers in this paragraph I guess) Also, one point I wanted to comment on was the Romance aspect, which wasn't a lot, and that's fine. I just saw many reviews exclusively talking about Adam and Ronan, and I just don't get the hype. They met like twice 😅 I am happy for them, but I could never get that excited about their relationship because they got together off page (still mad about that) and the story is just not centered on it. As I said, that's fine. It's just not the style of the story. As a lover of love stories, I am, of course, a bit sad about it and would like to have more romantic scenes, but it is what it is. I was actually more interested in another relationship, possibly forming there 👀 Okey, I guess this review is already long enough xD All in all, I wasn't feeling it until around the middle of the book, but, of course, I want to continue (just maybe not now, I need something more exciting inbetween 😅)

"Dreams are not the safest thing to build a life on." "The opposite of magical is not ordinary. The opposite of magical is mankind. The world is a neon sign; it says HUMANITY but everything is burnt out except MAN." Liebe alles an diesem Buch

God, what a start to this trilogy! I loved The Raven Cycle and was so excited for The Dreamer. This book is much more adult, serious, and darker than its Prequel. (But then again, what do you expect from the Lynch brothers). So yes, I am very much in love - even if the book took a while to get going. (which is totally okay) There were also some characters I really struggled with, but Ronan and Adam made up for everything and by now I love the book!
