The start was strong, getting thrown right into the story. I loved everything about this book. Lara‘s feelings throughout the whole book where so well depicted, I was able to understand her feelings the whole time. Even though it tore at me in the beginning knowing she was fighting for the wrong side 'cause that much was honestly pretty damn obvious. Obviously not for her since she was raised in isolation to believe her father’s lies. Doesn’t make this any less frustrating though. And oh my, the end had me hooked. My heart was bleeding since the moment Aren sent that letter. It wasn’t hard to predict what kind of ending Ithicana was doomed for because of this. I‘ll be definitely reading the second book as soon as possible. I‘m hoping for a happy ending

Ich hab mir hierfür Zeit gelassen, teils zunächst wegen Freizeit-Mangel..😅 Aber dann war ich umso dankbarer für das reduzierte Lesetempo, weil ich das Buch wirklich genießen konnte und es echt gut fand. Die Figuren sind in sich stimmig, das gilt für die Hauptcharaktere sowie für Nebenfiguren. Lara als Hauptprotagonistin ist schön graustufig, nicht perfekt aber nachvollziehbar. Obwohl ich anmerken muss, dass ich die Beschreibung ihres Aussehens, eines so überirdisch schönen zarten und fragilen Körper (auch aus Sicht des männlichen Love-Interests) als problematisch empfunden habe. Schönheitsideale sind halt auch leider noch immer in der Romanwelt ein Problem, weil es oft wenig Varianz gibt (das gilt übrigens auch für die Männer..). Zudem ist es auch einfach nicht glaubwürdig, wenn wie in Laras Fall, sie gertenschlank (aber mit 'Idealen Kurven') ist, dabei aber die Kraft und Fitness einer Soldatin besitzen soll und damit problemlos einen Kerl nach dem nächsten umnietet. So funktioniert menschliche Anatomie nicht liebe AutorInnen. Da ist leider insofern definitiv Luft nach oben. Deshalb der halbe Stern Abzug. Das Worldbuilding ist dafür ne wahre kleine Perle, mal zur Abwechslung in einer fiktiven Fantasy-Welt, jedoch ohne Magie, Fabelwesen und Co.. Tolle spannende Handlung, tolle Twists, mieser Kliffhänger. Der Spice nicht überbordend prominent aber sehr gut geschrieben, fügt sich gut mit der Handlung zusammen, arbeitet nicht dagegen, sprich wird nicht unlogisch. Freu mich somit auf Teil 2!

What a surpise this was. I had such a good time reading this. Normaly comparing books to ACOTAR is a bad idea, but in this case I can't resist. It gave me some of the feels that ACOMAF did and that is saying something. This was amazingly paced for the first 75% of this book, giving me all the moments and details I needed to immerse myself in the story. It lost a star because it suffered from show-don't-tell at the end, which is such a shame. This should have beem 100 pages longer. The dynamic of our leads was really compelling and so fun to read about.The banter 10/10, it literally had me cackling. Getting to know Ithicana and it's people was such fun journey. I fell in love with it just as Lara did, which is my favorite way to explore a new world. Aren is such a great MMC and I love that he is honorbound, loyal and fierce. This also has one of my favourite things in the world, which is a badass FMC, as corny as it sounds. My girl knows how to fight, poison and scheme and we love to see it. From the first chapter, I knew I was going to love her. I read in some reviews that they felt that she was really naive for believing her fathers lies, but I totally disagree. She was absolutely brainwashed, which is the only reason I can forgive her for the madness she caused (MISCOMMUNICATION AND LIES

Ich bin erst bei der Hälfte, aber ich kann das Buch kaum weglegen und kann es kaum erwarten wie es weiter geht. Die Entwicklung ist so fesseln, die erschaffene Welt so wunderschön, die Entwicklung von Lara so ehrlich und verständlich. Ich weiß der große Knall und das Chaos mit der Wahrheit wird kommen und mitreißend sein, und ich weiß jetzt schon ich werde die komplette Trilogie lesen!

Ich hab diese Buch vor über 2,5 Jahren das erste Mal gelesen. Klarer 5 Sterne Read, ab dafür auf die all time favorite Liste und weiter ging’s im Fantasy Game. Jetzt gabs durch meinen Book Club einen kleinen trip down memory lane mit einer zweiten Runde, dieses Mal auf deutsch. Keine Ahnung, ob es an der Übersetzung liegt. Oder an meinen gestiegenen Ansprüchen an Fantasy inklusive der Erwartungshaltung an über Bände gezogene Komplexität. Oder meiner extremen Lebenserfahrung, die ich seither sammeln durfte (I doubt it). Aber ich fand es irgendwie ein wenig langweilig und musste mich ein wenig zwingen, die Reihe ein zweites Mal zu beenden. Das macht dieses Buch auf gar keinen Fall zu einem schlechten Buch, nur halt nicht mehr zu einem Perfect Match für mich. Ich glaube, dass dieses Buch der perfekte Einstieg in die Fantasy Welt sein kann. Keine Fabelwesen und keine Magie, sondern lediglich eine andere Welt mit einer anderen politischen Situation. Ein bisschen enemies-to-lovers, ein bisschen action, aber alles nicht zu wild und über tausende von Seiten verteilt.

Okay so, I needed some time to process the ending of the first book. The last three chapters really had me crying my eyes out. It took such an unexpected turn. Imma take my time before I start the next book of the series. But I’m really excited and looking forward to reading it :))

"The Bridge Kingdom" follows Lara, a princess who has been trained in isolation along with 11 of her sisters to become a spy and assassin once one of them gets married off to the king of an enemy kingdom to fulfill a treaty between the two countries. Lara is neither her teachers' nor her father's first choice, but to save her sisters' lives, she fakes their death and becomes the bride of the enemy's king, as well as her father's spy. Once in this strange kingdom, she finds out that not all is as it seems, and the isolation of her life up until her marriage might not have been for her protection, but to keep her from questioning the indoctrination of her teachers. She must choose between following through on her mission and protecting the people she has come to love. My favorite part of "The Bridge Kingdom" was the political dimension and how it tied in with the worldbuilding. I really loved to see how these two aspects were obviously built around each other by the author, the geography of the world dictating the political realities and the geography being molded to justify the political situation. Likewise, Lara was a trained spy and assassin, but without any previous practical experience, young, and not even the best of her sisters. She was allowed her strengths (knife fighting most of all), but also weaknesses and fears (a fear of water as she grew up in the desert without learning to swim), making her feel realistic in her role. There were a few (three, if I remember correctly) time jumps, where I felt that what had happened in the meantime had been a little glossed over, but other than that, it was an action-packed book. The characters were busy fighting enemies on their shores most of the time, interspersed with calmer moments between Lara and her husband, the king, and his people, striking a good balance between showing the urgency of change and giving Lara time to get to know the people she'd want this change for. I am really satisfied with this book.

Ihre Intelligenz und Beharrlichkeit machen sie zu einer herausragenden Protagonistin, mit der man gerne mitfiebert. Die Beziehung zwischen Lara und dem König des Bridge Kingdom ist ebenso fesselnd. Ihre Dynamik ist komplex und vielschichtig, was das Buch zusätzlich spannend macht. Die Beschreibungen der Landschaften und politischen Intrigen sind meisterhaft und tragen dazu bei, dass man sich voll und ganz in dieser Welt verliert. Für mich war "The Bridge Kingdom" ein herausragender Auftakt, der mich definitiv dazu bewegt, die weiteren Bände zu lesen. Ich habe das Buch auf Englisch gelesen und freue mich sehr, dass es nun auch auf Deutsch übersetzt wird, damit noch mehr Leser in den Genuss dieser fantastischen Geschichte kommen können. Insgesamt ist "The Bridge Kingdom" von Danielle L. Jensen ein Muss für alle Fans von starken Protagonistinnen, komplexen Beziehungen und fesselnden Fantasy-Welten. Dieses Buch bietet alles, was ein guter Fantasy-Roman braucht, und hinterlässt den Leser sehnsüchtig nach mehr.

First of all, I did not finish this book. And I honestly don't get why almost everyone on BookTok ist totally obsessed about this one. I mean, yes, the story starts really great (and unexpected) - but after that, it just gets meh. I wasn't motivated to carry on reading. Maybe it's just the wrong book for me.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher was ich von dem Buch halten soll. Zum einen mag ich die Idee und die Welt in der das alles stattfindet. Aber meiner Meinung nach haben die Charaktere kaum Entwicklung, der manche Plots wiederholen sich, die Gedankengängen/Handlungen usw. von den Protas sind für mich einfach nicht nachvollziehbar. Und ich mag nicht wie das Buch beendet wird. Die Protas lieben sich aber dann kommt jemand und er ändert sofort wieder seine Meinung über sie, obwohl er weiß zu was sie erzogen wurde und obwohl er ihr das auch verziehen hat. Ich störe mich einfach daran das der gesamte 2. Teil auf falscher Kommunikation beruht, die meiner Meinung nach von beiden Protas hätte einfach geklärt werden können, hätte man einfach geredet. Die erste Hälfte des Buches hat mich wirklich gepackt aber es hat dann schneller nachgelassen als gehofft. Ich werde trotzdem mit dem 2. Band weiter machen und hoffen das beide dort endlich weiter entwickeln.

I love the concept of this book, it’s so cruel but powerful, there is a lot of betrayal and character growth. I found myself feeling with the characters. There are really strong family bonds in this book and mysteries kingdoms. I love the Main Character Lara so much. She’s very strong and her growth in the book is admirable.

I really really liked it. It is not the typical Romantasy story. There is no magic system or other supernatural occurrences. But the strategic and political intrigues were so interesting to follow. In my opinion the transition to Lovers came kind of out of nowhere and happened very quickly.

Das Buch hat sehr vielversprechend und interessant angefangen, aber leider wurde es dann super schnell recht zäh. Die eigentliche Grundidee, dass Lara Aren verführen soll und ihn umbringen möchte, flacht nach wenigen Kapiteln ab. Die Protagonisten nähern sich für enemies to lovers zu schnell an, aber dann auch irgendwie nie so richtig. Es gibt ein paar wenige Momente, aber das „Ich liebe dich“ am Ende ist trotzdem wenig glaubhaft, weil die beiden sich eben nie so richtig angenähert haben, dass man die Beziehung irgendwie glauben/fühlen kann… die restliche Handlung, der eigentlich recht politische Plot, ist sehr flach gestaltet, es passiert kaum was & wenn dann wiederholen sich die Ereignisse extrem. Was mich auch gestört hat waren die vielen Zeitsprünge am Ende. Man hätte dem Buch ruhig noch ein paar mehr Seiten gönnen können, so hatte man den Eindruck, als sollte das Ende schnell abgehandelt werden, obwohl es da ja eigentlich das erste Mal spannend wurde. Der Plot Twist am Ende mit der Schwester ist war relativ überraschend, aber dennoch konnte mich Arens Reaktion nicht überzeugen. Erst lieben sich die Protas so & dann hinterfragt er sofort wieder alles nach einer Aussage der Schwester, obwohl er weiß, dass Lara in fragwürdigen Verhältnissen aufgewachsen ist und wie ihr Vater tickt. Macht für mich keinen Sinn, dass er dann direkt wieder vom Gegenteil überzeugt ist. Charakterentwicklung fehlgeschlagen bei diesem Buch…auch Laras Entwicklung ist irgendwie naja - sie verliebt sich halt, aber ihr Verhalten ist 90% des Buches nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar. Schade, das Buch hatte echt Potenzial, aber weder die lovestory, noch sonstiges konnte mich letztendlich überzeugen. Die Sterne gibt’s für einen angenehmen Schreibstil, recht schöne Beschreibungen der Welt & die an sich gute Grundidee :/

The rare action-driven romantasy story that is relatively light on the spice, oh my. I even liked the dual POV because the two compliment each other so well. It reminded me a lot of “King of Battle and Blood” / “Daughter of the Pirate King” / “The Shadows Between Us” / “From Blood and Ash” but with more plot. So much betrayal and twists and turns and I love it.

Das Buch gibt es ja mittlerweile auch auf Deutsch, ich finde das englische Cover aber so viel schöner. 😇 Was sagt ihr? Und die Geschichte war auch spannend. Hätte ich nicht nebenher noch Throne of glass gelesen, hätte das Buch bestimmt auch noch mehr Suchtfaktor auf mich gehabt. Auch das Englisch ließ sich gut lesen. Bin gespannt auf den zweiten Teil. 😍

A lot of the story takes place on or near the water. In the beginning I had difficulties to get into it, but this is often the case when you enter a new fantasy world. You have to get used to the environment and all the names, places, etc. While reading, the world gradually builds up and is really magical and is described so real that you can really immerse yourself into it. The story itself is really exciting and successfully written. With Lara, a really strong protagonist was created here. She had to go through brutal training her whole life, physically and mentally she was very broken. But when she saw what beautiful things and feelings life has to offer, she changed her attitude. Watching her change was really beautiful. Lara and Aren grow closer and develop feelings for each other. But through betrayal, their relationship is shattered. It sounds cruel, but I liked that, because now Lara has to rebuild Aren's trust. And until then it is still a long way, which we then have to conquer together with Lara in the next books. I'm very excited about it and will definitely continue to follow the adventure. Conclusion I liked the book very much. A recommendation for fans of "Throne of Glass".

This series is one of my all time fantasy favorites. It has everything I need. A trained assassin. A warrior king. Betrayal. Love. War. It’s a wild journey and I highly recommend everyone to try this series if they love fantasy with a romance twist. Characters written in perfection. Unique world building. I can never decide whom I love more - fierce witty Lara. Or passionate hot Aren. Those two own my heart. And someone should forbid Aren the use of the endearment ‚love‘. MY HEART CANT TAKE IT. He’s already too hot to handle with out that. 5

Ich bin ohne jegliche Erwartungen an dieses Buch ran gegangen und muss sagen, dass ich definitiv überzeugt und überwältigt bin. Es beginnt direkt schon super fesselnd, wir werden mitten ins Geschehen hineingeworfen und die ersten Intrigen und Geheimnisse lassen nicht auf sich warten. Dieses Buch hat von Anfang an eine ungemeine Sogwirkung auf mich ausgeübt und diese auch nie verloren, sodass ich gar nicht anders konnte, als nicht aufzuhören. Die Charaktere und vor allem die beiden Protagonisten, Lara und Aren, waren sehr glaubwürdig und nahbar dargestellt, sodass man sofort einzeln mit ihnen mitgefühlt hat, auch wenn man sich nie so ganz klar war, wo nun ihre Überzeugungen liegen. Generell wusste ich in diesem Buch nie, wem man wirklich trauen konnte und wem nicht, was auch dem überraschenden Twist am Ende zuzusschreiben war, den ich ehrlich nicht habe kommen sehen. Einzig und allein an der Liebesgeschichte habe ich eine kleine Kritik auszusetzen, einfach, weil ich nicht immer komplett mitfiebern konnte. Einzeln waren die Protagonisten wirklich stark und greifbar, doch die Liebe habe ich ihnen nicht komplett abgenommen. Emotional war es mir einfach zu wenig und ich habe das Gefühl, dass das körperliche hier etwas zu sehr im Fokus stand. Dennoch war es ein wirklich wirklich gelungener Auftakt und natürlich werde ich mir Band 2 holen, weil ehrlich: dieser Cliffhanger? Wie könnte man da nicht weiterlesen!!

Noooo you can't end it like this!!! Okay let's start at the beginning … I started this book cause it sounded like something I would like and we could read the first chapters for free. So I started it and just fell in love with the world and all their characters!! The world building is amazing … like Lara we know almost nothing about the world, just the little things she heard here and there. When everything starts to unravel … it's just awesome. And the characters, love them! They aren't just there to fill the space. They were so complex that you could feel with them. I couldn't stop reading and now I regret that I finished it so fast, cause now I need too wait way to long for the sequel!!

Es hat stark angefangen aber dann etwa in der Mitte war irgendwie die Luft raus, zum Ende wurds dann wieder spannend. Irgendwie ist nicht magisch an der Welt, keine Fähigkeiten oder sonstiges. Nur die Königreiche/Gebiete sind fiktiv, sonst hat es leider keine Fantasyaspekte. Das hat mir dann doch gefehlt. Irgendwie wurde es in der Mitte dann auch oft sehr politisch und hat man bei dem ganzen Geschehen schnell den Überblick verloren. Ich hoffe der zweite Teil wird vielleicht etwas magischer/ nicht so arg politisch/kriegerisch.

Der Anfang war super spannend, brutal und aufregend. Die Mitte hat mich leider sehr enttäuscht. Alles hat sich gezogen, Interaktionen waren zwar die, haben mich aber nicht wirklich überzeugt und teilweise auch gelangweilt. Das Ende war dann wieder großartig und ich möchte jetzt bitte den zweiten Band gleich hier haben.

This 👏🏼 was 👏🏼 so 👏🏼 good 👏🏼 I loved all the scheming, the politics, LITERAL enemies to lovers, the slow burn, everything! This book had soo many of the good tropes (one bed, female assassin, who did this to you, and many more). It was not read to read and also kind of predictable, but damn I need to start the next book asap!! Lara is a flawed character, who is not 100% likeable, which made her more real and damn a little cockroach she is. I’m so excited to see how she is going to get out of that damn situation in the end!

Zusammen mit einer alten Schulfreundin, die überlegt sich einen Bookstagramaccount anzulegen (Mach es, mach es, mach es! 😍), habe ich diese Reihe begonnen und auch wenn momentan durch Uni und Arbeit viel los ist, war der Wunsch immer da, dieses Buch weiterzulesen. Es hat nämlich definitiv Potenzial zu einem "Ich habe angefangen und konnte nicht aufhören, also bin ich jetzt durch"-Buch. ✨ Kickass-Prinzessin Lara soll den Feind ihres Königreichs in die Knie zwingen und das in dem sie ihn heiratet. So soll sie das verfeindete Königreich von innen heraus zerstören, allerdings (wie soll es auch anders sein) ist Aren nicht das, mit dem sie gerechnet hat. Die Charaktere haben spannende Hintergründe und kommen aus sehr unterschiedlichen Ausgangspunkten. Die Geschichte wird daher auch aus zwei Erzählperspektiven aufgezogen, was wirklich super gelingt. 👌🏼 Außerdem erwarten euch ein tolles Setting, Charaktere, die ihr aus dem Fenster schmeißen wollt (hallo emotionales Involvement), Enemies to Lovers und eine Prise Spice. 😍 Ich bin sehr gespannt darauf, wie Band 2 sich entfaltet und wie die Beziehungsdynamiken sich entwickeln. Eine wirklich tolle Reihe, die ich euch nur ans Herz legen kann. Allerdings ist sie auf Englisch. Also wer gern auf Englisch liest und dieses Genre mag, ganz große Empfehlung! 🥰 4⭐️/ 5

Ich hab mich lange vor diesem Buch gedrückt, weil es nur auf englisch verfügbar ist und die meisten Wörter schwer zu verstehen waren. Aber ich bin so unglaublich froh, dass ich es probiert und geschafft habe. Es war ein holpriger Einstieg, aber als die Weltbildung und Charakter-Einführungen durch waren, kam die Geschichte schnell in Fahrt. Ich will nicht lügen, es wurden viele Klischees bedient, aber auf großartige Weise. Enemies to lovers in einer gesunden Geschwindigkeit... Als die ersten Liebesbeweise anfingen, wurde ich so mitgerissen, dass ich plötzlich Tränen in den Augen hatte. Zur Schreibweise kann ich leider micht viel sagen, weil es mein erstes (vollständiges) englisches Buch war. Aber die MCs sind es wert, ihre Geschichte zu verfolgen ♥️

Mir haben ab und an ein paar Fantasyelemente gefehlt, aber es hat lange gedauert, bis es mir überhaupt aufgefallen ist. So spannend war die Geschichte an sich für mich. Mir hat es vor allem gefallen, wie viel Handlung bei vergleichsweise geringem Worldbuilding vorhanden war. Kein Vergleich zur Blood & Ash-Reihe…

This was a high four-star read! This is exactly what I was in the mood for: Princess is trained to be married off to another kingdom to kill its king but falls in love instead. This trope is simply immaculate. The execution was also simply stunning. The world-building was not too fast but did not drag either, and I really loved the main characters. One thing I did not enjoy though was that there is a slight miscommunication trope (can you call it that?) happening in the book, which in my opinion just was not necessary, and which annoys me every single time I read about it. Why can't characters just talk with each other?? Also: the book ended on a cliffhanger, so I am intrigued to start the next book right away, but I think I will wait at least a month or two until I am in the right mood again.
