YA Fantasy Romance at its best! In „Yumi and the Nightmare Painter“ by Brandon Sanderson we follow two young adults that are forced to work together to figure out the secret of the magical bond that ties them to each other. Exploring the worlds of our protagonists Yumi and Painter was so exciting and magical. I believe Sanderson did the perfect introduction to the world and characters so I wont go further into any plot summary. I would recommend going in blind if you love the Cosmere and like YA romance. As with many Cosmere novels this one also manages to build a unique and creative magic system that still fits perfectly into the big picture. It has many parallels to "Tress of the Emerald Sea" but still feels completely different. I very much enjoyed the conversations about art that are woven through the whole novel. They felt insightful, lyrical and made me think. Especially the connection of art and technology really intrigued me and feels relevant in the present day. Also the characters grew on me with their strong personalities and flaws. They felt well thought out and I found their lives so interesting that both of their stories touched me in the end. Its really hard for me personally to like a fantasy romance since I feel like the romance part sometimes takes up too much of the story. So going in I was a bit worried how present the romance aspect would be. Especially in the first half of the book the classical tropes like forced proximity and therefore awkward situations are very prominent. Even so I would say that these situations focused more on them getting to know each other rather than just flirting. But what will linger in my mind is not the romance but the amazing story that unfolded in the second part of the book. The way this came together in the end was truly wonderful.

Eine wirklich schöne Geschichte, für die man kein Cosmere-Experte sein muss. Spielt in einer originellen, asiatisch-inspirierten Welt und hat eine süße Romanze, die eine große Rolle spielt. Und des Stil war etwas anders als der typische Sanderson-Stil, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat.

Absolutely in love with the dynamic between Yumi and Nikaro! And the worldbuilding? So creative, damn. This was only my second Brandon Sanderson book, and I caught one reference to Mistborn. I wonder how many others I‘ve missed 😄 The first half dragged a little in my opinion, but the ending definitely made up for it!

The story is set in the Cosmere universe told by Hoid. You follow Yumi, a high ranked priestess (Joki Hijo) from a world of light, gardens, meditation and spirit, and Nikaro the nightmare painter from a world of darkness, technology and nightmares. Yumi spent her whole life in obedience, summoning spirits that bestow vital aid upon her society. Having one wish - living a normal life…even if it is only for a day. Nikaro/Painter wants to be a hero. A wish that left him on the outside, leading to nothing but headaches and isolation. Both facing loneliness in their own ways. One day, Yumi was falling from the sky into Nikaro’s life. Suddenly flung together, the two contrasting characters have to work together and overcome their differences in order to save their world. Usually I am not into romance books BUT this book was amazing. 🤍 I just flew through the pages. It was such a cute story. The two main characters, Yumi and Nikaro were great together. I loved the banter between them and the way their relationship grows. You can tell by their actions and thoughts that they live under completely different circumstances. Both worlds were unique and felt like the opposite of each other. It is the third book of the secret projects, but I think it can be enjoyed without much knowledge about the cosmere. (I haven’t read every book in the cosmere yet, and I was ok 🤔) There are a few easter eggs, but nothing you had to know to follow the plot. It was funny, a little bit sad, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. A beautiful story. I will definitely reread this book in the future. Someone just asked me if I have ever cried while reading a book. Not yet, but this time it was pretty close! 😭

7.5/10 Non so cosa mi aspettavo da questo libro, perché avevo sentito delle voci e mi aspettavo comunque di avere qualcosa di più, però non è tra i miei preferiti e in più i personaggi non mi hanno preso molto, rispetto agli altri libri. Forse è il più romance che ho trovato nel cosmere ed è il più inspirato ad altre opere non sue. La pecca più grande è il finale: avrei preferito avere qualcos'altro come finale, quello che doveva rimanere.

Danke an Brandon Sandersons Frau, dass sie ihn ermutigt hat, mehr Romantik in seine Romane zu bringen. Das Buch war so herrlich zu lesen; eine wirklich zauberhafte Geschichte. Ich finde es auch toll, wie viel Gedanken der Autor in dieses Buch gesteckt hat. Er sagte, er habe sich von Final Fantasy X inspirieren lassen, wo die Hauptfiguren einzigartige und ungewöhnliche Berufe haben, die zum spezifischen Stil des Worldbuildings passen. Das ist etwas, was Sanderson in einem seiner Bücher einbauen wollte: Charaktere, die in ihrem täglichen Leben ihrem Job nachgehen, der für sie völlig normal sind, aber für uns Leser sehr ungewöhnlich. Und das hat er in Yumi and the Nightmare Painter getan. Es ist nicht nur der Buchtitel, “nightmare painter” zu sein ist auch ein Beruf, aber natürlich verrate ich nicht die genauen Einzelheiten der Berufsbeschreibung, das müsst ihr selbst herausfinden. Dieses Buch war wirklich eine interessante Lektüre; definitiv eine einzigartige Geschichte. Das gilt auch für den Schreibstil. Ich glaube, ich habe noch nie ein Buch gelesen, bei dem der Erzähler eine (nicht beteiligte) Figur aus dem Buch ist und den Lesenden direkt anspricht und ihnen die Geschichte erzählt. Das war anfangs verwirrend, aber nachdem man sich daran gewöhnt hatte, hat es viel Spaß gemacht.

The audiobook is wonderful! And Sanderson just knows what he's doing. It is so funny and deep and emotional, hilariously surprising with lovely characters, a unique story, long but not boring. Have I mentioned deep? So so deep from time to time. It is amazing how much you can take from a fantasy story. 100% recommend!

Tolles Buch, geniale Welten, gute Charaktere und ein faszinierendes Ende. Fesselnder Schreibstil (nur die paar 4th wall break Passagen waren nicht so das Meine).

Ich bin so geflasht von diesem fantastischen Buch! Yumi und Painter sind mir unglaublich ans Herz gewachsen. Die Welt ist unglaublich greifbar, die Geschichte mit all ihren Wendungen ein Feuerwerk der Gefühle. Ich habe gar nicht die Worte um meine Begeisterung für dieses Buch, welches fast schon an Poesie grenzt auszudrücken. Brando Sando, du hast mal wieder ein Meisterwerk erschaffen!

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte von Yumi und einem Nightmare Painter, die durch eine überraschende Fügung des Schicksals miteinander verknüpft sind. Gemeinsam erleben sie ein Abenteuer, bei dem sie in die jeweiligen Lebenswelten des anderen eintauchen, sich Herausforderungen stellen und daran wachsen. Überraschenderweise ist das Buch eine Liebesgeschichte, die so packend erzählt ist, dass ich, einmal im spannenden Teil angekommen, das Lesen einfach nicht mehr unterbrechen konnte. Die Welt, in der die Geschichte spielt, hat zwar lose Verbindungen zum umfassenden Cosmere-Universum des Autors, aber im Wesentlichen steht die Handlung für sich. Besonders haben mir die Illustrationen im Buch gefallen, die die Geschichte auf eine unterstützende Weise begleiten. Sowohl die Zeichnungen als auch die malerischen Beschreibungen der Kunst in dieser eigenartigen Welt haben einen bleibenden Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen. Insgesamt kann ich das Buch jedem ans Herz legen, der Interesse an einer einfühlsamen Liebesgeschichte, einer Coming-of-Age-Geschichte oder einem Mix aus Fantasy und Sci-Fi hat. "Yumi and the Nightmare Painter" bietet all das und noch ein bisschen mehr.

Sanderson hat sich bei dieser Geschichte an asiatischer Kultur orientiert - und eine seiner Inspirationen war ein Videospiel, das auch zu meinen liebsten gehört. Nikaro lebt in einer Stadt, in der Alpträume den Menschen gefährlich werden können. Sein Beruf ist es, diese Alpträume in eine Zeichnung zu bannen. Yumi ist so etwas wie ein Medium, das zu Geistern sprechen und sie um Unterstützung bitten kann. Als ein Geist sie eines Tages im Hilfe bittet, müssen Yumi und Nikaro versuchen, ihre Welt zu retten. Dieses Buch hat mir von den bisher gelesenen drei "secret projects" von Brandon Sanderson am besten gefallen. Eine Geschichte, die genau die richtige Mischung aus Spannung, Humor, Ideenreichtum und Abwechslung enthält, und zudem sprachlich überzeugt. Ganz große Leseempfehlung.
