Die Idee der Book Eater, die sich tatsächlich von Büchern ernähren und denen, die von der Norm abweichen und als Mind Eater geboren werden, ist ziemlich cool, die Umsetzung mit den Elementen, die definitiv Richtung Horror gehen, auch. Anfangs gefiel mir die Story auf zwei Zeitebenen auch gut, vor allem die der Vergangenheit, die zeigt, in welcher Art Patriarchat die Book Eater Frauen leben müssen, unterdrückt, fremdbestimmt und nur zur Fortpflanzung gut. Aber irgendwo im letzten Drittel hat mich die Geschichte dann verloren, gegen Ende war ich froh, dass es bald rum sein wird. Es hat sich total gezogen und die Perspektive eines Mannes fand ich noch dazu super uninteressant. Die Auflösung verdient dieses Wort eigentlich nicht, vieles blieb offen, ungeklärt und unerwähnt. Fans warten auf eine Fortsetzung, die vielleicht irgendwann kommt. Ich brauch sie nicht.

Für mich ist es ein absolutes Highlight ❤️ Ich kam relativ langsam voran, obwohl das Englisch sehr gut zu verstehen war. Der personale Erzähler fokussiert sich zum Großteil auf die Hauptfigur Devon und die Kapitel wechseln zwischen den Zeiten (present day vs. e.g. 5 years ago). Dies finde ich richtig super, weil es die Geschichte aufrollt und sowohl die Emotionen von damals als auch heute gut zur Geltung bringt. Außerdem ist dadurch die Charakterentwicklung der Protagonistin und auch einzelner Nebencharaktere gut nachvollziehbar. Mich hat die Geschichte total gefesselt und ich fand sie bis zum Schluss spannend. 🤩 Dies war mal wieder eines der Bücher, bei dem ich richtig traurig zurückgelassen wurde und mir nur dachte „Schade, dass es jetzt vorbei ist“.

Wow was für ein toller Schreibstil. Ich war von anfang an voll drin und hab das Buch mit absicht zur Seite gelegt um länger etwas davon zu haben. Das Worldbuilding ist fliesend in die Geschichte eingebaut. Genauso das Charakterbuilding. Definitiv lesenswert,aber das Englisch ist nicht das einfachste. Nach ein paar Seiten kommt man aber gut rein.

I've had big expectations for this book because the description seemed very intriguing and creative - it felt innovative and full of potential. I must be honest and say that I had a difficult time in finishing this book. It took me longer than expected for just 300 pages. Why? The plotline was not very exciting to me. I did like the characters a lot and enjoyed Devon and Cai as well as Hester and Jarrow but I think it lacked in relationship development and deeper interactions. Book eaters deals with many important and dark themes, like a women's free will and choice additionally to the meaning of gender roles as well as expectations and sexuality. I enjoyed dealing with Devon's experience but felt that the "present day" chapters lacked in depth compared to the flashbacks. The flashbacks made an impact on me and went in depth about the topic of motherhood and patriarchal systems, which were topics that interested me. Lastly I will again point out that a big reason that I didn't like the book as much as I wanted to is because the description of the plot seemed to be more fantasy-focused. I expected to learn more about the Book-/Mindeater lore and world but was disappointed. I chose explicitly this book for the fantasy-genre in the book club I'm in because the description sounded cool. Should Devon and Cai's Story continue in a second book I would give it another try, if the focus would switch on the fantasy aspects of the story.

Im so sorry for giving that book two stars... First of all: I loved the idea... Book eaters, mind eaters and how their society works. The author did build a very awesome world! 😍😍 The problem is with the description of emotions feelings and thoughts. There's only one time where Devon's feelings get described deeply. The lack of emotions and thoughts makes it very difficult to connect to the characters. Looking back there's no character I really liked. Also the romance part was weird. They talked about five times to each other about escaping. So no deep talk. And suddenly they love each other deeply and can't live without one another? It didn't make sense to me🙈 Overall 2/5 ⭐

The only reason it took me forever to finish this book, was that at some point the formatting of the book was a bit hard for me to handle. And well … life happened. But other than that, I LOVED this book. It doesn’t get 5 stars, simply because I needed a tiny bit more, or a second book, since a few things kinda felt open in the end. And I need answers! Otherwise I really enjoyed this story. The whole lore of the world and families was amazing and it was stunning to read about something completely new. I was super invested in how this book would end, cause I had no idea how the main character would get out of a very sticky situation. The moral dilemma Devon kept facing between wanting what’s best for her kid and what is the right thing to do, was well written and really got to me. So I really wish there was more, but I also get this book as a stand-alone. Will definitely re-read this baby in the future.

This book in a nutshell: A literal bookworm from a cult-like society living in the north of Great Britain has a dementor child, runs away, and falls in love, all while juggling a mother's love with the moral dilemma of feeding innocent people to that very same child... I probably enjoyed this way more than I should. I can definitely see the story not klicking with everyone. At its core it's a modern reimagining of vampires but from a female perspective. There are a lot of enjoyable themes and the plot is engaging as hell. You also can't help but feel for Devon, the protagonist, she's a monster but she is so very aware of it and riddled with guilt. Following her journey from a precocious but very sheltered and naive child to jaded and stubborn adult was extremely satisfying. It helps that the society she's trying to escape is so very backwards and misogynistic that you just have to root for her in some ways, while still condemning the actions she takes later on in life.

Grausam, spannend, schön, das Buch hat all das zu bieten. Das Konzept der Book und Mind Eaters ist sehr gut ausgearbeitet und birgt großes Konfliktpotenzial! Die Erzählstränge in der Gegenwart und der Vergangenheit lassen den Leser immer mehr in den Charakter und die Pläne der Protagonistin eintauchen. Am Ende fiebert man dem großen Finale entgegen.

Oberflächlich gesehen geht es in diesem Buch um eine Mutter und die Liebe zu ihren Kindern. Auf einer tieferen Ebene geht es aber um so viel mehr: Es geht um die Tücken von Moral, um's anders sein, um toxische Glaubenssätze, um Stolz und Verrat, darum was es bedeutet frei zu sein. Auch wenn dies ein kurzes Buch ist in dem nicht viel Worldbuilding betrieben wird, erfahren wir doch genug als dass uns die Welt und Gesellschaft der Book & Mind Eaters in den Bann zieht. Devon ist meiner Meinung nach ein fantastischer Lead Charakter da sie auf eine ganz menschliche Weise agiert. Sie ist auf keinen Fall eine Person die vorbildlich handelt und sieht sich daher sehr stark mit ihrer eigenen Moral konfrontiert. Allerdings kommen ihre Entscheidungen immer von einem Ort der Liebe. Während die Autorin die Möglichkeit gehabt hätte, Devon eine klassische "not like the other girls" Rolle zu geben, hat sie es stattdessen geschafft dass Devon zwar dem klassischen Bild einer Heldin nicht entspricht aber doch zu jeder Zeit authentisch bleibt.

Wundervolles Buch mit einer wirklich genialen Idee. Grob gesagt ist es einfach nur die Geschichte einer starken Mutter, im Detail steckt aber so viel mehr! Ich liebe das Worldbuilding, die Morally grey Charaktere, die Spannung und den Schreibstil! Konnte es ab der 2. Hälfte kaum noch aus der Hand legen.

*3.5 Die Geschichte rund um die "Book Eaters" war sehr kreativ und wieder mal etwas erfrischend anderes im Fantasygenre. Ich mochte die düstere Erzählung rund um Devon und ihren Weg raus aus der festgefahrenen, frauenfeindlichen Traditionen der altehrwürdigen Buchesser-Familien sehr gerne. Allerdings kam ich den Charakteren nicht besonders nahe und insgesamt wirkte die Geschichte für meinen Geschmack etwas zu konstruiert. Eine nette Unterhaltung die nicht ganz meinen Lesegeschmack getroffen hat.
