My brain needed a break and so I started this book hoping it would be a light and predictable love story - like a 90s rom-com. The story turned out to be slightly more serious that I thought but it still was a very good and easy read. Tiffy is sympathetic. It was easy to connect with her as she is realistically written. She deals with financial and relationship problems everyone could have experienced. Leon, however, has given me Sheldon Cooper vibes with the rather unemotional writing style during his parts. I didn't like that much at first but got used to it and I think the author opens him up a little as the story progresses. Beth O'Leary does a great job telling the story of Tiffy and Leon without making it all about the relationship. Also the problems they both have to deal with a very well integrated. I liked it :)
truly humourusly written, whilst also covering serious topics (trigger warning: toxic relationships). I didn't like the ending tho, it was too cheesy in my opinion.
It took me a bit to get used to they style in Leons chapters. But hey! at least the two characters had their own styles + voices in their chapters! (even though I get why some might not like this book because of the way Leons chapters are written; they read like a script or bullet points...). I loved the different story lines and how it all fit so perfectly together; with all the cute side characters. This book also touches PTSD, abusive relationships and I would also say racism (because Leon is a POC, and I am just assuming that his brother is one as well, because it would really make sense in his storyline). I was surprised how "early" the two characters met - compared to the last book I read where the characters first meet through texts, and they only met each other in person at 95% through the book which was quite late. I'm not gonna say when they meet, but I'm just gonna say it's definitely before the 90% mark of this book. Having said that, I just wished the ending was different. It was too perfect for me. Furthermore, one big topic in this book is the complete opposite schedules of the two protagonists which enables them to share a flat without really seeing each other. I just wish that this topic was picked up again a bit in the end, because for me it seems like a challenge for a relationship, and it wasn't touched upon enough in my opinion.
Schon lange auf meinem SUB und endlich gehört. Eine kurzweilige, süße Geschichte!
To be honest it took me some time to get used to the way Leon's chapters were written, but after some time and understanding why it was written like that, I got used to it. I had no idea what deep subjects are in this book, but I was positively surprised. In the beginning I was kinda annoyed by Tiffy, but learning with her about her past and her changing makes you look on the beginning differently. Over all, while I am not a total fan of the writing in Leon's parts, I really enjoyed this book and finished it quickly, because you can hardly stop reading!
Absolutely loved this! Bought the ebook first but fell in love with the witty shortness and lack of pronouns in ‘Leon’s writing’ so decided I needed an actual physical copy to read on. Bringed in a day cause, these two... Leon’s softness and Tiffy’s fire! What a pair! The clever storyline and tempo kept me thoroughly entertained and I enjoyed every page. Wished there was more!
I dont even know what this is to be honest. This was one cliche after another, after another. Made no sense at all to me. The chemistry was off. The setting was interesting but everything else was ... meh. What I really liked tho, were the chapters from his point of view when he was working. I love hospice work so - those made me smile. Oh also - writing style - meh.
This is probably the first time I've understood the whole book bf thing
The story itself was very slow and the proposal wasn't necessary in my opinion. Added to that I would love to get to know Tiffys parents:) Now, the positive aspects: I was really invested in Richies fate and loved Leon as a character!! In my opinion Beth O'Leary did a good job integrating a serious topic: emotional abuse and gaslighting!! It's a topic that is super important and there should be more awareness about it!!
Ahhh. Consider this more of a gargled noise than a word. Ahhh is the only sound adequate to express what I think about this. Cannot think in words. Must be careful not to turn into Leon. A grumpy guy who dislikes most people, with a small number of exceptions. I loved it. I’m trying to think of words to describe how much and why, but I’m sitting here smiling like a love-struck teenager, feeling all fuzzy and warm. I can’t remember the last time I’ve encountered two fictional characters who were so right for each other. Two strangers, who probably wouldn’t have met otherwise, meet by coincidence and a heartwarming story ensues. First of all: Those two really do know how to write letters and notes. I don't usually like those in books, but here I devoured every word. Second of all: Normally, I rarely like reading stories with dual POVs. I don’t enjoy them very much, because they take away an air of mystery and instead add a lot of tedious details, in my opinion. But for "The Flatshare," I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Creating fictional characters is already hard. Creating characters who harmonize beautifully is even harder. I loved that they are different characters, but that those differences aren’t aggressively drilled into us. There are tons of novels out there with a bubbly, lively female protagonist and a quiet, stoic male protagonist, but here, it is actually believable how two strangers who lead different lives fit together really well and bring out the better in each other. Going into this, I wasn’t sure from the beginning if they would end up together in a romantic way or if this was more about friendship, but that’s because the chemistry is so well-written. They don’t just take one look at each other and instantly despise each other or drown in each other’s blue eyes. Well, given the way this story is constructed, the point is that they don’t see each other, but you get the point. Leon doesn’t speak much, but it’s not because he wants to be mysterious. Tiffy is much more extroverted and lively, but not silly. And together, they are even better, without telling us that they necessarily have to change who they are. I’ve always loved the idea of not falling in love, but growing in love. In a world of instalove, the idea of “slow burn” is often two characters who are attracted to each other but can’t be together in that moment. But I love the idea that two people can genuinely meet and not consider the other as a love interest at first, for various reasons, and one day take another look at them and realize how deep they are into all this already. It’s not that an ugly duckling suddenly turns into a swan; it’s more like you just haven’t looked at swans at all. And to think that I’ve read this book before, and I remember that it was good, but not this good?
Well, this was really quite good. It deals with heavier topics in a surprisingly thorough way without losing any of the charm and lightheartedness of the story. The characters are well developed and their voices are distinct. I enjoyed the interactions of the main characters as well as those with the side characters. It was also pretty funny actually managed to make me laugh several times. The only complaint I have is that I wasn't completely invested in the actual romance but at this point I may as well just admit that that's a me problem.

So sweet and heartwarming. I really liked it!!

this both managed to be uplifting, funny and feel-good, and also tore my heart to shreds. the narration is incredible, i am very glad to have listened to the audiobook!
I gotta be honest, I put the book aside after reading a few chapters a few months ago because I couldn't STAND the writing style from one of the two POVs; and while it still wasn't my fav even now that I am done with the book, the plot and tje characters more than made up for it. This boolk made me laugh out loud multiple times, which I always appreciate, and I genuinly felt the chemistry between the two characters and actively shipped them (which doesn't happen all too often). I definitely get the hype now, and I already got another book by this author, just because I am craving MORE!
"It was never home until you were there, Tiffy." Ugh, this book was soo good! ✨
